Custom Scratchbuilt Imperial Dalek Commander (Doctor Who)

Every now and then, I accumulate enough unfinished spare Dalek parts to give me a noticeable head start when I eventually do put them to use. In this case, the dome and shoulder section (complete with fitted joints for articulation, I was delighted to find) had been sitting in my cabinet for about four years, originally intended to be a gray/black Renegade Dalek. Long enough for me to forget the work that went into fabricating those parts and feel like I was getting some freebies!

Awesome. Blue makes for a great departure to the usual red or black supreme. And love the update to the Imperial. Small changes really do make a world of difference.

The choice of blue was really nice, makes this design way more unique. As well as that it's great seeing you become more refined at making these guys. Although I do have to ask if you considered introducing 3d printed parts on them especially since you have used 3d printing before? I also think the next step in capturing the likeness of an imperial is thickening the neck rings. Either way you're doing great!

I have occasionally used 3D-printed hemispheres, but only when I run out of the fake pearls I normally use, which I prefer due to the lack of any layer lines. I already had the whole construction process figured out before I had access to 3D-printing, so there hasn’t really been a need to rely on it for any of the parts. Besides, I think a 3D-printed Dalek is less impressive than achieving the same results with more limited tools.

Have you ever thought of doing some kind of stop motion with these guys? I do really like the shade of blue you used, by the way.

I have! I loved making stop-motion animations with my toy Daleks as a kid, so I know I'd enjoy it. What's kept me away from it is a question of convenience: Building a set for them and lighting it properly is going to take up a lot of space, and consume a lot of time. What's probably more likely to happen first is for me to make a Dalek animation that's entirely CGI.

Two Months late, but are you excited for the 15th Doctor's first season coming up?

I’m always excited for new Doctor Who, but I’m pretty distrustful about how the show is being handled at the moment. There’s been a string of ominous major creative decisions starting with the 60th anniversary specials that have been setting off alarm bells in my head. Most notably, bringing back Tennant and the handling of his regeneration that introduces Gatwa. Outside the show, the malevolent lurking presence of Disney can be felt even before the new era properly kicks off, like the new season being called ‘season 1’ as if everything before it doesn’t count, and it being touted as a ‘Disney Plus Original’. I’m seeing bad omens all around. But as I said, it’s still Doctor Who, and I’m still excited even if I’m not very confident the show is in good hands right now.
