There’s a set of creepy robotic stage performers just round the corner, programmed to move towards human voices. Good thing there’s this helpful message playing on speakerphone to warn the Freddy’s night guard about such things.
For my FNaF animations, what usually happens is that I have the idea for an isolated moment first, then plan around that. This time, it was the part where the animatronics start to move in response to the recorded message drifting down the hall from the security office. The phone audio doesn’t actually put you in any danger in the game, but something similar would later go on to be implemented as a mechanic in UCN.
The actual experience of playing FNaF2 is quite a bit more chaotic than this, with nearly three times the number of active threats, including the constant struggle to keep the Puppet’s lullaby playing to avoid disturbing it. I made a deliberate choice not to cover everything in this animation: Just as in the game it’s easier to balance your focus between four animatronics than it is with all eleven, it’s also easier to balance the focus of a scene.
The big thing about FNaF2 I thought important to try and recapture here was its sense of exposure. There’s never anything more than a corner or two between you and the danger, and with no physical barriers of any kind. But one part of that sense of exposure that I've always felt doesn't quite come across is the long hallway.
Because of technical limitations with the way the game was constructed, with the office as a 2D image which pans back and forth with no sense of depth, the hallway eventually starts to feel like just another screen to watch. I find myself kind of forgetting how it's meant to be an actual extension of the room you're in.
This is in large part solved just by changing mediums to 3D animation, where even the most subtle parallax serves as a reminder of the physical space. But one other thing I did was to have the light from the camera views spill out into the hallway, marrying together the cameras and the office in a way that simply wouldn't have been feasible for a game made in Clickteam.
To elaborate on why that wouldn't have been plausible in the original FNaF2: The various animatronics that stand in the hallway would need an entirely new set of renders for each new source of light. With the light from five different cameras being visible from the hallway, that would sextuple the amount of hallway renders (per animatronic!), and just be generally more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks, I enjoyed adding those little touches. It was like I was giving myself fun diversions from what I was supposed to be doing: ‘I’ve been animating Mangle for hours, what if I just animated a balloon slightly rolling around on a shifting table real quick?’ I also think that having the characters interact with the environment helps compensate for how static CGI animation tends to be. Shifting fog, slightly moving the camera, or floating dust particles, are all things that get used all the time to mask how unnaturally still everything is in a CGI environment.

This was a really nice break from all the VHS horror and avoiding the movie spoilers. It was a little unsettling but after a few minutes it was kinda nice, just sitting there in your office while the animatronics walk around and look at you sometimes, no danger of being seen without the mask since you don't need to take it off! Mangle crawling around was oddly endearing and the little steppies that the other toy's do are just plain adorable! Mega realistic too with them steady steps.

I do feel like the animatronics are the most realistic I've seen yet, but they still seem impossible considering the timeframe in which they were built. This is the mid-80s we're talking, these things would need a hydraulic pump, a floppy drive so that their movements could be scripted, a power source (like a VERY large battery or a generator or something, and probably an electric motor/servo to control things like eyes and hands. And this is operating under the assumption that these things are somehow capable of sentience and can move under their free will.

Oh, so cool, just so cool. Mangle's definitely my favorite character and the difference in movement here between him and the other three accentuates part of why - there's just something so different about her. Animalistic, but still more aware than one might expect from such a mess of parts. The detail of him using two hands, the spare head and a hook all to claw further through the vents from the point-of-view shots - and those shots in the first place, showing him keeping low as she crawls, with the static draining out all other sound - was one of my favorites, as was the response of seemingly some dislike for the name, or at least the way the message spoke of him. I also very much like other details of the movement, like his walking around on the back of that one hand or struggling to lift her heads on such long limbs, that show what a struggle it can be to be like, well, that. And, while Mangle is a part of the focus of this animation, the others are not to be overlooked - the models themselves look incredible, and their movements are equally eerie, and very detailed (Mangle slipping on the vent cover was such a nice touch). The way they loudly stomp around - with a well-made sound that truly did remind me of something like porcelain on tile - and then look to one another whenever they move really does make them seem like they're just getting stuck in a feedback loop, not fully aware of their surroundings. Like mechanical zombies, truly seeming dead even when they move around like they're alive. Mangle seemed, if anything, more aware than the other three, not coming directly down the hall but still moving with purpose - and desperation, in that scrabbling crawl - through the vents, identifying the phone call and destroying it when it offended her, before just.. leaving, like the guard didn't even really matter to any of them. I would've somewhat liked to see Mangle using the eye on that other head, as well, but I dunno how that would've been translated well to a screen anyways. The camera lights do wonders to make it all feel more coherently in one place, in the Chica scene and all the party rooms, as well as that transition from the stage to the stage camera, which was very well done. Amazing work, and I'm exicted to see your showcase on the models as well.

One thing that’s important for me to clear up here is that the footstep sounds you mentioned being well-made I can’t take credit for, they come from Security Breach. But on that note, Security Breach does represent a big step forward in sound design compared to what came before. I’m glad you liked how I presented Mangle here! She required a bit of experimentation, because of being so different to all the others. Being offended by how he was being described in the voicemail wasn’t entirely intentional on my part; it was meant to be more a case of Mangle finding the source of the noise. It just seemed dramatically appropriate to have the phone guy in the middle of describing her at the time. I wanted this short to contain everything you’d need to know to figure out what’s going on even without having played the game, so an explanation for his existence had to fit in there somewhere.

Damn that was amazing. The hallway utilization in fnaf 2 defiantly felt limited in what it could do and it's effectiveness for depth. I'm glad Help Wanted made it feel a lot closer to you as well as more deep now that it was in a 3D. But your animation fully realized the potential of the hallway, and the cluttered, eerie feeling of seeing all the animatronics right In front of you like that. Your Mangle's behavior and the way it just hung out of the vent like that is just so good man.

Another incredible one from you Others have already mentioned it, but the Mangle's animation is definitely amazing there I particularly like the way you animated it trying to get up, it's like it's trying to stand up as it normally should be, in a normal humanoid posture, but it can't because of how mangled it is and it just ends up looking really creepy It gives a feel like it's actually a robot trying to follow its programming And speaking of it, I think you nailed the robotic vibe on all of the toy animatronic, which aren't possessed and are just creepy robots with faulty programming ; it fits, and it looks great !

I was kind of unsure about that shot of Mangle trying to stand up. I was very proud of the animation for it, so I didn’t want to cut it, but I was worried about breaking the tried and true ‘don’t show the monster’ rule too early. In the end I don’t suppose it matters, since most people watching this already know what Mangle looks like.

@@TheNickofTime You can definitely be proud of it, it looks great, creepy, and adds character to the Mangle, I think it was worth it to keep it ! Seeing it wander has more impact than a delayed reveal in my opinion ; you just get to see the disturbing monster move around, while knowing it's going to get into the office at some point. That is kind of what the original horror of FNaF cameras was about, seeming them wander towards you and not being able to do anything about it. All in all, I think what you've come up with just fits perfectly !

I’m actually obsessed/in love with this. Mangle dragging themselves around is so much more unsettling than defying gravity and moving quickly. While the others feel robotic or zombie like, as another comment stated, Mangle feels like there’s a little bit more going on up there. It’s still stilted and not like us, but there’s something and that’s terrifying. The way they move feels like an animal in pain, broken and hurt but still dragging on because the instinctual fear of death is stronger than the want to lay there and scream. It feels like I’m watching an animal with rabies, real rabies and not the movie one. The one where you crawl around delirious and confused and dazed and hurting so bad, so very bad, and all the lights and the sounds hurt and you’re driven to attack the things that hurt so bad. They scrabble at the vent like a desperate fox might scrabble at a door, trying their best to just get to the thing that hurts and make it stop. They drag across the floor like an emaciated and dehydrated raccoon, their brain fragmented and destroyed by design and by grubby toddler hands. It feels like there’s this vague understanding behind the plastic eyes that this isn’t how they should look. This isn’t how they should sound. Everything shouldn’t hurt so much. But that’s all they can understand. They cannot understand how to fix themselves, only grabbing at parts and wiring them onto themselves in some sort of confused and desperate self-repair. They cannot understand how to make the pain go away, only throwing themselves at the source to make it stop. They cannot understand *what* it is that is wrong, only that something is wrong. Not that they have too many limbs or heads, not that they have been given up on by the staff for repair, not that they look like a nightmare. Only that this isn’t how it should be. Idk man. Something about this animation gave me a lot of emotions. I felt uncomfortable in the best way possible. I felt fearful. I felt pity and sorrow. Absolutely wonderful work dude.

Once they figured out that "no one was there" in the office- it took me a moment to realize- that all they wanted was the phone to shush so they could "go back to sleep" lmao

it’s been a year and i happened to stumble upon another one of your animations the day it was posted !! this one rlly captured the essence of fnaf 2 while adding more depth to it. the animatronics movements and the clunking of their footsteps along with having an actual length to the hallway improves the immersion drastically. i LOVED mangle’s mechanical and heavy movements and her clumsiness when falling from the vents !! those plus her beeping sound effects create a realistic atmosphere with haunting animatronics

seeing Mangle with his disfigured body walking around the pizzeria in a more realistic way shows how scary it would be to see her in real life. Him entering the office is quite disturbing, as she simplistic breaks open the ventilation and stares at the guard.

what I love most about this isn't the stellar animation, or the amazing models. It's the fact that you animated them like actual robots, with wandering, soulless eyes, stiff, aimless movements. It's simply amazing!!

This is absolutely amazing. A wonderful concept - I really enjoy how much clarity you have here, I think it really reflects the quality of the work you do! The cuts to the Mangle's POV is wonderful, I love the black and white static. Everything here feels so real. The whole shot at 3:55 is phenomenal and extremely cinematic. This is a ingenious way to showcase the Mangle's movement in real time, and also the whole aspect of the animatronics moving towards a voice. Great video as always!

I like any animation that puts the characters in a 'slice of life' be it in their in game forms like this (just wandering at night) or what their operation during the day looks like. Plenty of chance to be unnerving, but seeing a side of them the games either didn't show or didn't put too much energy into being games with as you say a wide array of things to focus on. Awesome work!

with how you portrayed the animatronics being attracted to the voices of people, it adds that little bit of immersive worldbuilding, and explains why the animatronics come to your office. KZbinrs are babbling so much in playthroughs or people talking to friends while playing that you can argue them talking is actually attracting the animatronics which is pretty funny

They're fascinating. I usually have a lot more to say, but this one's left me without words for the most part. Just marvelling and enjoying. Seeing them in their "natural environment", no jumpscaring or anything, is deeply pleasing. The music really added to it. Some things I noticed is that Mangle seems really urgent to get into the office to the voice, much more quickly than the others do, as if it's desperate. Maybe for help. It lashes out at the answering machine the moment Phone Guy mentions the staff call it "the Mangle", as if it's actually upset at its physical condition, wants help to be repaired properly, and is frustrated to the point of physically lashing out when reminded of the neglect it's experiencing. And the other thing I noticed is that after Mangle starts to leave, after Phone Guy's voice is no longer coming from the security office, the Toys all seem to shift their features at the same time after a delay, as if their "follow the voice" programming has timed out now that they're not hearing one anymore. Fascinating to observe. And also yeah, the Unigoat's on the left vent path as Mangle's POV crawls through it. Was wondering what that thing was until I read the video desc.

Phew, phenomenal once more. "Hello hello, is this the night guard?" - "NO this is Mangle, now shut up!" I also like how this now kind of foreshadows a situation in SL; HandUnit telling you stay quiet while basically blaring into the room at full volume and possibly alerting the Animatronic in the room😂 1:08 - This right there, they might not come that way so quickly if he'd just silence the phone😅 But at least the treat level was lower with less animatronics, no music box and vents(at least the regular ones) to keep track of. Mangle was phantastic to follow(did the orighinal model also have a hook, it feels rather unsafe to be around, especially as a take-apart "attraction"), I generally could watch this for hours, but that would be a pain for you, ha ha! I think I found the Unigoat, only place where it could've been. Was already staring very intensely(buring my retinas) at the tv footage too, in case I had missed something😆
@TheNickofTime
@TheNickofTime 8 ай бұрын
The question of the hook is actually something of a continuity error, now you mention it. Mangle pre-destroyed has been shown to have a hook, notably in the Foxy’s curtain teaser image and in FNaF World. However, the actual model of Mangle in FNaF2 has two hands. I was doing a minor redesign anyway, making a distinct endoskeleton design instead of how the official model reuses the Withereds’, one, so while I was at it I put the hook back. I thought the hook would make more sense for how Mangle hangs from walls.

I really liked this, the detail of the phone guy's calls being what attracts the toy animatronics to the office as opposed to them being haunted being a really nice touch I never even thought about. Secondly, the nightgaurd just.. not taking off the freddy head out of fear on his first day (and successfully warding off 4/4 active threats depicted here) is amazing since going off of the VR model, you really wouldn't have to EVER take it off. Keep it up man!

This is absolutely incredible. I've seen plenty FNaF animations around my time, being part of this fandom since 2014, but seeing them actually move around combined with the lighting and the cinematography gives this so much more depth. I really like what you did with the map and all the materials as well. Probably the most realistic and accurate FNaF 2 animation there is. The sound design is incredible, though I do wish you added audio for all the cylinders and servos inside the animatronics firing and made the footsteps a bit heavier.
@TheNickofTime
@TheNickofTime 8 ай бұрын
Their movement sound effects were a bit of a conundrum, this is true. I couldn’t make them too noisy, or it wouldn’t be believable that they could go anywhere without the night guard hearing them from across the building. But the bigger reason for going light on the sounds was because this animation had so, so much sound design work that I was at the end of my rope when I decided to cut my losses and just settle for a few clicks here and there for sweeping movements.

One of the coolest little details about this is how the guard looking through the cameras actually turns on the lights down the hallway. The bit with him staring at Chica down the hall with the light illuminating her, the realization as he stares of “Oh god, she’s RIGHT THERE.” And then the tension that builds as she walks toward the center hall and you just barely see her shadow? Unreal. That part is nowhere even near being the main point of the animation, but the fact that so much care was put into it is so impressive to me.
