Custom throwing axe from a Harbor Freight fireman's hatchet!

Operation Let's Do This tackles the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) throwing axe! Let's make an eye-poppingly beautiful axe out of the Harbor Freight Fireman's Hatchet which will stun the crowds and strike tongue-swallowing cerebral terror into our foes!

Sadly recent changes to NATF makes that axe illegal to use. The spike on the back is the violation. Still a good looking axe.

You could have tried to cut out the middle of the axe to kind of make it look like an axe out of Lord of the Rings. This could also reduce weight while maintaining the Viking axe look.

Dude I thought about doing that, but I couldn't because the axe steel is too well-hardened. It's one of the reasons that that particular axe gets such good reviews! If I had a forge I could soften it, drill it and then re-heat treat it, but I don't have one at this time. Soon though!

Did you just sand the paint off the wood handle or what did you use? I just picked up this same axe and I'm going to turn it into a bushcraft style axe, I will be cutting the spike off the back.

I just sanded the finish off of the original handle. I will say that the handle is not of the best quality, so if you're up to it you should replace it. I actually made a second axe and cut off the spike like you said. It was great until the handle broke! Thanks for watching!

Yeah I found out about moistening the wood a few weeks after making the video. Another problem was that I used pressure-treated weatherproof lumber for my target, which is hard as a rock! I've since switched to regular boards which is a big improvement. Thanks for watching!

No but I'm thinking of joining. I've learned that you cannot bring your own axe to throw unless you're in a league, and apparently having a spike on the back of your axe, like mine, is now against the rules. Oh well, I can make a different one! Thanks for watching!
