While the practice of throwing axes has been around for centuries, there has been a recent explosion in it's popularity as bar leagues and home target throwing have taken off. I remember first trying this as a Boy Scout 50 years ago and have tried it on occasion over the years. In this video I share sone of my own throws, basic science, a few trick shots and a couple modified battle axes I that I build for my own amusement

@@suprememasteroftheuniverse like i said, formidable men who will never show it. What you are hoping for is that there are no formidable men, or humans. Which is a bad tactic. There will always be bad people. And what we need is strong people who can counteract the bad people. A balance. Teaching children to throw an axe or fire a gun while teaching them to be strong and compassionate and independent is a good thing. Trying to just excuse the tendencies of children, males, humans, or animals as social constructs is extremely detrimental. Please dont imply power, strength, or the ability to climb hierarchies is something that we should try to discourage. It really hurts us all.

after throwing the same axe for a while, you can judge the distance needed without measuring it. Also with practice you can learn to adjust the rate of rotation which changes the distance. The key word there is practice

This is how the renfest makes money on their axe throwing stands. The distance from where the person running the stands throws in front of the barrier is close to your position, but still close enough the seller can hit the target easily. "Proving" it isnt that hard. But your feet are about 2 feet back, making it almost impossible to match. It requires a quicker, and non-natural feeling, throw to hit it from your position.

As an experienced axe thrower, axes are not weapons. They are tools. But, any tool used incorrectly can lead to dangerous results or even death. With that being said, I sometimes walk around my town with one or two axes hanging on my belt. Nothing has been said to me yet. Excellent visuals in the video. The slow motion videos give a great visual on how the axe works. The angled throws are because your elbow is out. Throwing is very robotic. Straight up and and straight down. Bringing the elbow out, makes it come it at an angle. Not a big deal in tree slices (end grain) targets, but huge when throwing into planks. The blade axes are hysterical and a great idea! If I ever have my own place, I will have something like that on display and give you credit.

What if you change the angular speed by flicking your wrist in a way that it rotates faster? I'm guessing that because it's such a heavy object it is fairly difficult to do and that's why the axe rotates so consistently every time and the rotational energy is given by the whole length of the throw, not just the wrist like throwing a frisbee for example.
@YeanyScience

Great video! I was just wondering about that. If you were using them for hunting or defense you would have to carry different axes for different distances, kind of takes away some usefulness, unless you can adjust the rotation speed......

I find it rather surprising that distance is the dominant factor and not how fast you throw an axe. My expectation was that both factors are important. It goes in the right direction, i.e., the faster you throw, the straiter the trajectory is, and thus the shorter the distance it travels but still, I find it amusing. It would be interesting to make some simulations to see how precisely the initial speed matters.

@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 3 жыл бұрын
You might consider the effort needed to pull the axe out of the target but part of the problem of measuring that would be ensuring the initial force added to throw the different axes is the same. Of any of the axes I have, the modified axe that doesn't turn is the easiest to throw, requiring less force than any others due to it having less mass to it. Personally I hate to think about what damage that jagged edge would cause if used as a weapon.

As someone that has been teaching axe throwing for the last 5+ years, technique is 100% critical. Throwing too hard just makes you look like you have anger issues. If you go to a venue and the coach has a suggestion for you..... LISTEN! They are trying to help you succeed. If the coach tells you to get insanely close, that is where you need to be to make this work. The physics of the throw is that in the first 25' (8m) there is only one place in which it will work for each thrower and their technique. You cannot be successful at a distance and then just back up 3 feet and make it work from there. That's how a ball works. Axes are not balls. It doesn't work that way.

Did you notice the slight wobble during flight? The axe oscillates a little to the right along the axis of the handle as it travels forward, then when it's 180 degrees inverted it oscillates back to the left by the same amount and is back to its 'straight ahead' (release) position then it's fully upright again. It's the Dzhanibekov Effect!
