CUSTOM TRUCK CRANE MOUNT!

Designed + built in one day - Truck crane
In this video I show how I mounted a long ram pickup truck bed crane as a semi hitch style mounted crane with outriggers for support. I used implement jacks for the out riggers and custom hand screws for fastening the baseplate. the whole project can be disassembled and used on other trucks/vehicles. The design was made on the spot as I filmed so obviously it can be improved. I would like to one day install a cable hoist system and maybe more adjustments in the telescopic boom/arm.

Nice crane build and should come very handy. I would say only one jack is sufficient because the truck is not moving(ie with the hand brake on), so zero horizontal forces.

If I was to rebuild it or modify it, i would change my outrigger location a little bit. Go to 14:26 and you will see the outrigger on the right lift because of the position of the load once it has swung around into the bed of the truck. To fix that small problem i might put a jack stand into the ball hitch reciever directly below the center of the tailgate.

I must be the only one who saw the rear outrigger raise about 10" off the ground when the entire assembly twisted forward when the cabinet was hoisted... Needs an outrigger under all directions the load will hang. Other than that... sweet fab work.

It definitely lifted! haha, but after using the crane a few more times i realized i just have to raise the outrigger jack more. By doing so it compensates for the suspension drop of the vehicle and it stays planted.

Thank you! There are some things I would tweak, but I designed it the same day I built it because I needed it so bad, I have used it a lot, and it has saved me many times! When you said beehives, I thought of a lifting mech you might like to build in addition to your crane - Google "overhead pallet lifter" - building a miniature one for easy slide in and under would be a fun project, it would also be faster then rigging a beehive box with straps which would also limit your contact, movements, and handling with the hives. Also you could stack them easily, I don't know if that's what bee keepers even do, but just a thought.

@@ShopGoatVentures I had already thought of a fork lift type pallet lifter. I'm hobby beekeeper and only move 1 or2 hive at a time I had been lifting them with an elevating trolley, because of the fear over overturning. The 3 point base seems to be the answer The commercial blokes here in OZ and the U.S. put 4 hives on a pallet and stack them 2 or3 pallet high on 12 and 20 ton trucks they carry fork trucks to handle them.

Great build and video shop goat! I wonder if I could modify your idea and make a trailer crane. Wheels beside the outriggers, use the long beam as the trailer neck. You could pull it in one piece, jackknife the trailer to get loading position. Now it is portable without taking bed space, and no assembly. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting!!

Hello, just got here after being learning about an ultra tow truck lift like this one for a truck! I like the way you build. Your welding is perfect. I'm looking forward to weld as perfect as you do. I want to add three suggestions for your and every possible reader's considerations. 1-45° angles. The angles you chose whether even and beautiful, leave a span or an area of 140° of not support. Try to support, or to lift something with your hands spread in that angle, get a weight bar, put some tolerable weight on it, try to lift it with your arms at 20° angles and see when you choose to go at 45° what happens? I won't tell you what happens until you try something. And you will see why you may want to go 45° from that point out or, better yet. The point you chose is one. See it from the top, imaginarily trace a line from where you believe could be the center of support, towards the center of your crane if, you want to add only, two points if support, as you did. Why? According to some 3 points define a plane. You have one, in appearance. I will say you have 4, that will serve as support points. You have your tires bottom points, you have your hitch mount center which is attached to its screws etc. And you have the center of the crane. All that in a circumference of how many angles if the crane center is 0°? I think you have a vast area of 270° lacking support of which in this video at 20° or 25° extending jacks on the left side of those two jacks, the one attempting to save the day is the one behind the rear end. I don't want to say this but I'll say it. Don't hate me, here I come. In designs, especially in mathematical, physical, where materials, even lives can be at risk, beauty is not in the eyes of a designer but in the correct points or measures mathematics and physics dictates for you to operate then, not while designing, save, secure, in peace, therefore, beautiful. My grandfather used to say "It won't look very beautiful, but it'll be safe". And believe me, I love and done art since I was little so imagine every time my father says "No le quedará bonito, pero le quedará seguro" in Spanish to a client (we're from Cuba so please bear with my English). Then there I have to go to make it beautiful because again, I like art but, I will never sacrifice safety and security for beauty. Up to before installing this 20 some ° angled jacks you had 270° of voided support you need to attend. Now you may have between the rear jack and the center of the hitch receiver or, the tire point a good..am calculating in my mind easy 110° angle unsupported or without a point of support. I recommend you to from the center of your crane wherever you place it, draw a line corresponding with your tires bottom points crossing the crane, extend that line about the same length if possible or what you can, that's if I don't remember wrong a correspondent angle from right rear tire through the crane, same from left rear tire through the crane and calculate approximately if there's too much gap beyond a 90 ° angle, you don't want that, because your crane can go with load against your truck due to lack of support. 2-The triangular wedges at bottom of crane to be made bigger, thicker, changed for those tiny ones. Consider it, if possible. Those are your trapezoids, the bigger and thicker, the longer your everything will last! 3-Leave an extra inch, on your pieces (projects) or more, for future changes like the pin coming from top, down. This is one of my struggles with my dad. He wants to do all jobs perfect, but when we need that extra 1/8", 1/4" or less, he already cut it, or didn't allow it, he wants then the job to work. Is like wanting later on to run the pin from top down, you could achieve it, making the piece just an inch or even 2" longer for comfort. Ok, I'll continue learning from you. Thank you for reading my humblest suggestions.

@@ShopGoatVentures outriggers probably need to be at 90 degrees for better stability. I think if you came out the front of hitch then 90’d it into your exact setup it wouldn’t tilt over like that. Stronger in my opinion

Thanks for this quality video. It may be your first but I bet not your last. Looking for a crane that will lift a fifty five gal barrel/drum approx. 36”tall into my pickup bed. Do you think your unit could achieve that? I’m also looking to add a 1/2 ton electric hoist as my rig has 110-220 v on board. It’s a Ford powerboost. With this electric hoist feature I would loose 12” of my overall lift. I may have to go horizontal on the drums to achieve this task. A 48” overall clearance is a tall order. Your doing great man, keep up the awesome work.

Awesome fab work! Not sure I like the design, based on the dental chair lift the outriggers are better off being adjustable. Crane takes up half the truck bed but it is a small truck by the looks of it. Cheers

Thanks for the comment Keith. If i did it again i would experiment more with the outrigger locations. Im not sure if you noticed the one outrigger lift off the ground when i raised the table... I have since performed many lifts with this crane and the vehicles suspension goes down when lifting heavy loads, so to remedy that i just raise the jacks more to compensate for it and they stay planted.

@@ShopGoatVentures The jack kind of outriggers are a great idea though. I saw one where guy used a pin type and when weight was lifted into truck, it binded the pin and made very difficult . The jack type can be cranked and pressure taken off outrigger so I definitely want to go that way

Good job. The only issue I have with these cranes is having to lift them into the truck. That kind of defeats their sole purpose for existing. Someone needs to design one that folds up into the bed

Thank you, but I do believe the process, set up and the machine can also make a difference. This process was a gas shielding flux core weld, which I really enjoy and have the most exp with. But practice is also important.

Your absolutely correct. Fortunately the time it took to build has paid off for how many times I have used it in lifting welders, lathes, mills, drill presses, a 50t shop press, an 80gal air compressor, a 160gal RV propane tank, etc. The list goes on...

You should just add a 3rd outrigger and make it a stand alone lift. If your not using the hitch to transport it then there is no need to use it at all.

Nice setup but its over done. One support leg directly under the main base plate is enough. If your parked downtown just giving an example and you need to load up your generator for example your design takes too much space and wouldnt be able to load in confined spaces. Your design is good for farm/hobby land where loading and unloading isnt an issue as to city core

jason alexander if it did not have outriggers it would unbalance the crane causing it to stress the welds and steel side to side twisting the boom stand until it would be unusable . though the outriggers could have been made retractable to help in lack of space conditions. peace brother
