Welcome to my home! This is a 2005 Sprinter 14ft box truck converted to a solar powered tiny home.
This is my first van tour video so please let me know what you think or if you have any questions by commenting below!
I traded in my full-time job for full-time travel in a self-converted Sprinter. 🚐 But kept my love of food & yoga 👩🏻‍🌾

@@salliepower8751 Yep, working in the delivery business if you get closed in a truck you have to get someone to open it because the door opens from the outside only. Rvs have windows and stuff so it's not the end of the world because you can have normal look from the inside doors/ windows. My van is a walk through open concept for that reason.

Just remember when you cut the hole to the cab use the metal you cut and put hinges on it and a lock and use it as a door so that if the cab gets broken into they will not have access to your living quarters

Hi Looking good there, for some extra safety and stealth, put a high viz vest on the back of the drivers seat, a hard hat in the cab, and find the biggest pair of used dirty work boots from goodwill or another source, put these on an old newspaper on the passenger seat !! this should deter most people bigger boots the better ! An old clip board and steel tape measure also completes the work truck stealth deception .... Happy travelling :-) Bill in the Alps

Bill Weir, Now that there is some darn good advice. I wish there was a way to cover the outside of the window to make it look more inconspicuous. Something easy to roll up when you set up camp. I’m looking at doing something similar. However, I’d like an escape hatch that goes directly to the driver’s seat. I’d also like to make sure no one can lock me in from the outside in the very back. This young lady had a door on the side, which saves from getting locked in. Maybe I will have both, probably. Anyways, great ideas, thank you. Be well.

Love this :) Only thing missing is bathroom with shower, fan in ceiling to suck out warm air (really helps in hot climate and I wish I had it in my sailboat but have been to lazy to mount it), air spoiler at the front for better aerodynamic that also can double as more storage and door to the driver cabin from the box. I just bought a 2012 Ford Transit box car myself and is making it into a stealth camper as it seem much more easy to do and more roomy then my friends ambulance camper build (I did see how much work it was removing the ambulance interior and it makes it lot harder to put in new interior when it is not box shaped). The Ford Transit with big high roof box and lifting back door (750kg) It is perfect for me as it will make it easy to bring with me my dirtbike inside the car using the lift and it just looks like an ordinary moving van making a perfect stealth camper .

You really should consider pulling out the roll up door and building a wall with a window and access panels to under the bed. Each time you roll up that door you are bringing in all the dirt, grime, and lead dust that still circulates on our roadways even though it was banned in 1996. you will end up getting it in your food and breathing it in as you sleep. The panels from the roll up door could be used for the bulk of the construction. You can still make it look "stealth" though at this point most people know what to look for to see if the big white vehicle is being lived in. if you are careful with the design. You would then be able to build cabinets over the bed for more storage. And would still have a view out the window in bad weather. Also this would give you a place to install a through-the-wall air conditioner. Another option is a fold down deck with the wall and window and a door behind it, so you could have access out the back and a patio. New sub, looking forward to see where you go.The panels from the roll up door could be used for the bulk of the construction.

Thanks so much for your detailed comment & feedback! I've considered replacing the roll-up door with something more fixed - and love the idea of windows!! I appreciate you subscribing and look forward to your comments & additional feedback :)

Please don't take negative comments to heart In all you have your self a great way to see the land But in no way is this a "stealth camper" You have yourself a RV The thing is huge and has a door that isnt made for that box like a Company truck and a Added in window Traveling the 7.3L V8 engine eats gas ...The closed spray foam is the best choice to go with Many people with transformed Campers throw in anywhere from fiberglass batt to foam board and can not fill in little gaps and holes proper ( i seen alot of videos on this) So well done I have not looked to deep into it yet but there is a way to charge your 2nd and 3rd batteries from your engines alternator after it has filled your truck engine battery But does not affect your engine battery if you drain your 2nd or 3rd battery ..However with a switch you can use the power off your 2nd and 3rd battery to start your truck if the engine battery is dead (no need for jumper cables ) ....Get a sticker on the truck TOM"S PLUMBING ! lol then you might be back in the "stealth" class

freakyflow thanks for your comment! I really appreciate your honesty. That’s a fair remark as far as being less stealth. I’m working on seeing what I can do to blend the window/door to make it less obvious. Honestly I’ve been lucky enough to not really rely on stealth camping using the iOverlander app so cant attest to anything just yet.

I love it, it minimalistic. I'm just gonna add my observations based on this video. Suggestions: -There is a ton of unused space along the truck's undercarriage and you can utilize it more by raising the suspensions and maybe getting bigger wheels for when you go on certain terrains. -Assuming its a 10 ft box, you should be able to put a 1kw solar system(with relocating the fan on the wall). Recommended to add those automatic extenders to allow it follow the angle of the sun for max energy efficiency. -If you follow this set up and have a 1kw solar system along with a lot of odyssey dry-cell batteries(This is my preference since its military grade), then you can able to use more electrical appliances such as:(Only examples) + AC( I recommend a Split type and replacing the fan with this) + Electric stove(Not induction. There are plenty of 1kw electric stoves. Induction generally use 2kw MINIMUM. Not Also because you won't emit so much CO2 and choking in that small space.) + Electric Oven + TV (I recommend using only appliances with the energy star certificate) -I know you love the roll-up door but those aren't generally insulated. I recommend dismantling it and then find a way to insulate it(there are doors with a hollow center where you can flood foam into) without breaking it. - Air head composting toilet is the way to go. it smells nicer, the pee container can be removed and just hooked up to your gray water if ever you change the set up and have it in a fixed location in your truck. stuff you should be concerned about if ever you want to live like this(for fellow audiences): -Bathroom. This build doesn't have a bathroom(A physical room for pooping and bathing. having a portable potty doesn't count). this save space but its a big concern for certain folks. -Water. A person can live off of 1-2 5gal tanks of drinking water per week. Water uses a lot of space. And if ever you have a shower system you need more storage for water. otherwise you have to refill your water every other day and the cost of that is so much higher compared to doing it on a weekly basis since you still got to pay for gas to move to the water refilling stations and because you wont get the discount people get when they refill several tanks of water. -Security. If your house is your car then when you lose it you lose everything. You 100% NEED to think about this. I recommend adding a kill-switch that stops your car from running unless switch is off and something that prevents towing. Note: At the moment. This is a 3 yr old video, I don't expect Traveling Dietitian to find my observations on a video 3 yrs ago currently useful nor do i think she should do it because it is just a suggestion. This is just for education

Nice truck, but windows on the side, do not say stealth, they say toy hauler, then girly curtains, yeah, no stealth. LEOs are on to the living in a van thing now. Might make a 'hatch cover' to hide the windows, when going stealth. I had some stick on signs that read, NEED FLOWERS call 1-800-FLOWERS, and if they call that, they get a florist and my truck seems legit.

Most don't because most cities and residential areas especially have local ordinances against parking oversized and commercial vehicles for more then 2 hours (or at all!). To get around these laws your rig needs to be under 21 feet long. Some places also have rules about the vehicles width (it's usually anything over 6-7 feet wide and there are also places with laws regarding the vehicles height (like parts of San Fransisco especially) and they don't allow parking for any vehicles taller then 7 feet (so basically all high top vans). A box truck is super awesome but a lot more limiting. If you're going to be mostly in areas that allow box trucks then that's great, but most places don't allow box truck parking at all. No shade to Jayme though, she seems to be doing very well and enjoying her truck so that's kick ass! Also a box truck with any windows or doors on the sides is an automatic give away to law enforcement. Law enforcement officers know all about Vanlife and can easily pick out vehicles that have people sleeping or living in them. In places like southern California a regular panel van with absolutely no windows is best way to go so long as it's not more then 21 feet long.
@TravelingDietitian
@TravelingDietitian 5 жыл бұрын
@@avivamae5171 It's funny because I definitely have been nervous about finding places to park in general (like today going to the grocery store - a bit of a hassle) and especially places to park overnight. It's been surprisingly easy to do so though, thankfully! Since it is a box truck, backing into a parking spot for overnight spots may be working in our favor since it looks similar to a work truck. I'm certain we'll run into some troubles eventually, but so far it's been okay! Thanks for the heads up on San Fran, though, that's good to know!!!
@jedics1
@jedics1 5 жыл бұрын
Here in Australia we have similar restrictions but they are more relaxed, the truck needs to be under 4.5 tonne and 7.5 meters long to be under the same parking rules as a car. This is what I will be doing as the small box truck is very available, affordable and reliable here, at least compared to our much more limited options compared to America.

I happen to be a mechanic in Europe, and I had a Merc with one of those 2.7 diesels. It doesn't need fully synthetic. 10w40 semi synthetic is the best for them. I use Castrol Magnatech in those. Those engines take a lot of oil for their size, meaning they don't need an oil change ever so often. Replace it every 6-8K miles and you'll be fine.

I realize the post is 18 months old but I figure I would throw my applause and 2 cents. Great job and super idea using a 6 ft dresser as the bed storage these are easy to pick up at thrift shops and many are solid hardwood (you can always repurpose the top elsewhere). The dining area is so simple but I really like the way it can be reconfigured without blocking access to the cab . Now for the 2 cents... The height of the box is a problem that could be fixed by dropping it on the main rails. Adds a lot of work because you would have to make wheel boxes inside. I think it would be worth it. Hi Jayme! I read through almost ALL of the Comments that people wrote. Some were very interesting, some a bit too harsh imo, some people were very concerned about your safety. However you had a LOT of people commenting and most were pretty nice! Anyway, I thought it was cute how many compliments you received on your Avacado Pillow! The pillow which you even named, reminded me of a book I bought for my son when he was 3, and it became one of his FAVORITE preschool books. The title was Adam Avacado! So adorable! Anyway I will end my long comment by saying that You, ALSO, are adorable. And your box truck conversion is VERY nice. You gained a New Subscriber here, and I look forward to watching your other videos. GREAT JOB on everything you have done Jayme. You should be very proud. TTYL girl, and take care, be safe, and have fun!! ☺😉😍😘

Great job in the conversion, impressed with your design and layout! Good luck on your channel and future travels! Great choice of insulation! Good choice of year for the ULSD issue. You've clearly done your homework. I am also looking at a box truck conversion for stealth and space reasons. I think I am going to avoid the roll up door due to the fact that they leak heat and dust like sieves. For safety, I'm going to have a door installed that opens to the cab so I can leave in a hurry in case of emergency. I don't want to leave the safety of the van just to get behind the wheel, especially at night. While mace is illegal in some states, bear spray isn't and is just as effective. Happy trails and be safe!

Thank you so much for the comment, Nitram! It's been a long process, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out - definitely still need to do some interior finishing touches. That's exciting you're also thinking about doing a box truck conversion! I've considered doing a small door between the box and cab for the same reasons; it's in potential future plans for sure. Keep me updated on your conversion, would love to bounce ideas around with you! Best of luck in your conversion and have fun!! :)

Nitram Midnite, u could still have the roll up door. I saw a build where a wooden wall was built with a door, window and a wall ac built in about 2 or 3 ft from the rollup door & used as a garage. That purpose would be good for the rollup door causing air & dust leaking in. He operated the ac with the rollup door down, too. I’m not sure but I believe it was on Adventure Van Man’s channel a few years ago; he has a different rig now. Good luck. Mo in NJ

I agree, but most people arent in the vanlife community & haven't watched a load of these videos. They have no idea how people convert these vans into live in vehicles. Most people think of a VW bus or a huge RV when they think of a live in vehicle, and then only for holidays, not full time.. So while it would be much stealthier without those features, I would be willing to bet most people wouldn't clock this as a home on wheels. It depends what level of stealth you need, I suppose!

Really great video. I'm also looking at converting a box van or a Luton van (in the UK.) I'm torn between having the bed across the rear like you have done, and having the bed at the other (front) end, and using the rear for my external door. I've seen conversions online where a wooden wall with windows and a door has been built just back from the roller shutter, so in a nice location one can open up the roller shutter and have a view through full-sized double-glazed house windows and an openable but lockable house-type door in the middle. That way, on city streets it can be fully stealth with no windows or doors visible. But I do like the idea of the bed at the rear and being able to look straight out. And yes, for me, a cut-through to the cab would be essential. But then in the UK it rains a lot, and I'd prefer not to have to always go outside in order to get from cab to living space and back again. What I like about a box van as opposed to a panel van is that the walls are flat and at 90 degrees. Oh, and I like the white interior walls on your conversion.

Hi! Cathy typing, of Steve and Cathy's YT Account... Well done. I'm just at the beginning-design stages of an Eventual build-out of a cargo van... If you want to find videos about Box Trucks - Look for "Lutton Vans"... that's what they're called in Brittan... I think I may have also figured out a way to do a separating /composting toilet that isn't entirely plastic and will (I think) fit down into the size of a Foot Stool... haven't a clue about how to send a private message... no 15 year old's in our life right now who can explain it to me in tiny-tiny-little... steps... *sigh* Anywho... have fun out there. For the toilet - I love that idea! I went back and forth about even getting a toilet and honestly I haven't used it a single time yet... simply because we've been camping where public restrooms are easily accessible so far. I'll look more into the idea of a composting toilet, though, I love that idea. Are y'all planning to document y'alls conversion or travels once y'all hit the road?
