I ordered one of the Not A Wheelchair manual chairs a couple of days ago. I became a wheelchair user this year due to chronic illnesses, but it's difficult to see specialist doctors in my area, so I've only received one diagnosis (fibromyalgia), and I'll likely have to wait six months to get my other diagnoses (heavily suspected EDS and POTS). My family doctor and physical therapist are supportive, but my insurance won't approve a custom chair for fibro by itself. There's no used market where I am, and I am so so tired of hospital chairs! I already had all my sizes and was prepared to pay an eyewatering amount for a tilite anyway, so this was worth a shot. If I have enough energy when it arrives I'll try to make a video review of it. The world needs more projects like this!

It is so frustrating how nit-picky insurance companies are. Even when your provider and specialists are telling them to give you a chair for mobility. I had to save up for my chair, and then I got a letter in the mail stating that the insurance would fund up to $200 towards a "service chair" one of those with four small wheels that needs someone to push you around. It is unreal what folks have to go through to get some help to make their lives a little easier to live. I have also looked into Not A Wheelchair for a replacement. They are certainly affordable and of good quality! I hope your new chair makes life a little easier for you to cope!

Hi Gem! Rick here from Omaha Nebraska. Big fan. I love your videos as they are very informative. I roll a tilite AeroT. Ive been in contact with Not a Wheelchair and am going to purchase one of their manual chairs. I mean only $1000 for a complete chair , with a custom backrest? Holy Shit!!!!!!! My chair without the backrest was almost $3000. And the backrest was another $600. This is an awesome price for a custom chair.

I just got my first insurance covered chair! I had one through a charity before for about a year. This one is a power chair that elevates, tilts, and legs can be raised. It's a 30,000 chair!!! For me it was $0 with insurance luckily!!

Insurance won't cover my chair because in the US, insurance won't cover a chair you need because not having one confines you to your home. I need a chair to leave my home--I work full time and have insurance coverage--but had to buy my power chair used to get out and work. I was lucky and found a new $38,000 chair (11 miles on the odometer) for $1700 that was donated.

Thank you for sharing Not A Wheelchair. I have been having fits for months dealing with my wheelchair insurance to replace my stolen customized chair which I paid three grand for. The manufacturer said they have the replacement chair ready, but the insurance will not send the funds for it, even when they receive the police reports! I have been using a cheap hospital-style wheelchair for months and I can't do anything by myself with it. It is too big to fit through some of my doors, the rear wheels are placed so far back that I can't pivot to clear thresholds, the frame twists out in our yard or if I turn quickly, argh! So frustrating! I looked at the link you shared and I can manage this cost for a new chair with them!! Wonderful! Thank you once again for sharing this.

I had been considering a rehasense icon 60 until this feature for Not A Wheelchair - the cost was about $300 cheaper for the Paradox chair than the Icon [and the paradox is custom built!] Their ordering process was very straightforward and I've now received the CAD drawings for my chair and all the dimensions for it! They're really lovely and have been a breeze to work with so far. Current production estimates put me at getting my chair in mid January and I'm very excited for that.

I am currently on the hunt for a wheelchair as an ambulatory user. I had previously used a medical wheelchair that I found at a thrift store. It was a life saver at the time before surgery. But it's way too heavy and bulky. I can't be on my feet too long without being in a lot of pain, so I've been trying to find something much smaller, lighter, and possibly customized to me. I haven't asked my doctor for a wheelchair prescription as I'm sure he would not approve it. So far I can only find medical wheelchairs. But I did come across a company in the UK that another wheelchair user mentioned. It's called CareCo. Granted they are still medical wheelchairs, but some can be customized. I was looking at one that I could modify to look similar to a customized wheelchair, but when I converted the price, I realized it was way out of my price range. I'm now currently looking at one much cheaper, but can't really customize it. I can take the armrests off, but the rest of the chair still looks like a medical wheelchair. I just got done playing with customizing a wheelchair on Not a Wheelchair. I had to guess and use a measuring tape to the best of my ability. Since I am not approved by my doctor for a wheelchair, I don't think I can get measured properly. I would love to try one of these wheelchairs out, but it's currently still a lot of money for me and I don't want to take the risk and get a measurement wrong.
@Wheelsnoheels2 ай бұрын
i totally understand , dishing out that sort of money if your unsure of your measurements and worried you may get it wrong is hard to do , maybe contact them if you can and they may offer some guidance ,, good luck , let us know how yo get on 👍🙂

The only thing concerned me is that the footrest is too low for a small person like me.
@pjaypender10092 ай бұрын
You customize that. Everything about the chair is customizable. It's exactly as far from the seat as you specify.

Go play with the customizer. You specify the width and depth of the seat, the seat height, the dump (by specifying the height of both the front and back of the seat), and how far the footrest is from the seat. You specify the seat type and the backrest size and height from the seat.
