I never enjoyed firing customers, but unless they are willing to pay for the service, or understand that what they want is not possible with our business, parting ways is something that has to happen. As Frank Zappa said "there's a difference between kneeling down and bending over."

I was actually going to comment that. Especially that it caught Shawn's attention. I was doing work today and had a cardinal watching me the whole time . I believe cardinals are true messengers from Heaven after losing my grandparents a few months ago. I found this on a website: "It’s said that cardinals appear when angels are near and that the cardinal represents loved ones who have passed away. They are seen as messengers from Heaven who deliver words of love and comfort during difficult times."

I have been fired a time or two. The last time was like you last spring. A customer had someone doing some tree work. They told the customer hey I can mow your lawn for x amount of dollars. The customer called me and basically wanted me to match the price. They said I was a little high. I immediately said, " it's been nice working for you. I am sure the gentleman will do you a good job." He stammered a little and said ok thanks. The other company was what I call a fly by night company. They start up, realize it's not easy running a lawn and landscaping business, and just walk away. This was the case. The customer called me back mid-season and said they guy just stopped coming and wanted to know when I could do his lawn. I politely told him my schedule was full. I also told him to do not come back to customers that let me go.

We've always made a effort to service them the same week due to rain if possible. My crew had 4 working days and the 5th day was a small job or catcth up day due to weather. But sometimes you just can't get to it if multiple days of rain. Plus this showed he wasn't going to be a good customer trying to work with you so it's no big loss anyway to you.

Also, I'll add. If it rain on a Tuesday schedule, if we showed up Wednesday or Thursday if it was too wet to mow, we'd still blow, pick up, prune or something to get them a "visit ". Most of the time They were understanding. But then again I had mostly high end residential homes / estates so that's another game in itself

So frustrating, we are putting in longer hours playing catch up and you get the costumers calls. Once had one like that actually tell Me we are easy to replace because the little kid on the street has a mower , I told him customers are easy to get also and that I didn’t want him as mine so go call that kid . He about choked and changed his mind as I started to walk away and reload the trailer , told him goodbye and call that kid

With all due respect I understand where he was coming from. I also live in Ohio and just last week we had rain the first two days of the week. The company I haired works things a bit different from what it sounds like you do. It was not real clear but it sounds like if you get rained out a couple of days in a row you simple start work again on the schedule for whatever day it is rather than picking up where you left off. In my case the crew was behind two days and since I normally get mine cut on Friday they worked there normal sequence and mine was cut on Sunday, two days late. Everyone is delayed equally and no one has to go two weeks.

I have delt with that enough to now start figuring out unreasonable customers from the get go. They typically will tell you how aweful their last service provider was. They get quoted a few extra bucks for pain and suffering if they accept. Because I know it's just a matter of time before I am just as bad as the last guy. Mid season calls are another red flag.

I had a customer that thought the world revolved around her, expected me to turn up in the rain to mow and extend flower beds despite not paying for previous visits, So I told her to get someone else. So that's what she did. Then she started handing out the new company's cards to customers she knew of that I had near her just for spite. So I let them go so that she ends up with egg on her face. But two of those five didn't want to change as they said, it's not just the quality of the work that counts, it is the honesty and good reputation that goes a long way. I wonder if the new company will be putting up her Christmas, Halloween and Coronation decorations and lights for free! I might take a drive by later and see if any have been put up! If so, I doubt it was done for free!

I live out a ways in the "boonies", most of my neighbors either themselves or the companies that cut their lawn blow the first cuts clipping in the road. As a person that rode motorcycled all my life I still shake my head as that not only looks like crap but when a little damn or just piled a little is slippery as ice. It's really sad but i guess some just don't give a crap.

That grass on the road is a mess. There is a retired guy about a half block from us that mows 4-5 houses in the neighborhood. He mowed two days ago and left the sidewalks covered in grass. I thought about calling the city to complain. I suspect he's getting paid "under the table" and not paying taxes.
@tedgerstenslager2949
@tedgerstenslager2949 Жыл бұрын
And if he is, it is none of your business. As far as the grass on the sidewalks, if the people that live there don't complain, then why do you need to involve yourself. Now grass on the road is a hazard to motorcycles and should be cleaned up. People need to just mind their own business.

But i would pre drill yourself a hole in the center of the cap that you tap on the ground. Then get yourself some hardware a bolt long enough but not too long then two washers and a nut. To pass through the hole you pre drilled. I was just thinking it could save you sometime and money on buying new heads. From them getting holes in them from tapping them on the ground so much.
