My Dad is 86 years old. He gave me the family boat 2 years ago. It’s not much but it’s a 16’ StarCraft Super Sport. Open bow. My parents bought it new in 1976. I grew up on that boat. He had it repainted and replaced all the tops. Replaced the transom and flooring. It has been garaged. But yes when he was 84 years old he decided that he couldn’t do the boat alone anymore. Dad raced boats back in the 1950’s. My Grandparents owned a marina on Siletz Bay on the Oregon coast. And we’re a Mercury dealer. Dad was the youngest certified outboard mechanic at 13 years old. I have pictures of my Dad and Grandfather in a class with Karl Kiekhaefer. Let me know if you want to see them. It just depends on the person. Good on your client and my Dad for seeing that they can’t do it safely anymore. “ A man’s gotta know his limitations “ Dirty Harry……

I do not let them buy their own wire and consumables, etc. Or if there is a client i simply just don't care for, . I let them buy their own parts so if something goes wrong with it, I can come back and charge them for another service visit at full price at my own schedule. Every customer and job is different . I've got a few customers that are not appreciative. They don't listen dont read and they are demanding, etc.. I don't give them high priority scheduling , i've had to tell a few customers how I feel about them without cutting any fat . If you know you know. But for the good customers that are actually down to earth pay me on time and appreciate my service, I drop what I'm doing to make it happen for them

You Asked… The Client vrs you as a boat repair service . Every situation and time of year is unique so; A. if you’re way busy then you only supply the parts and the labor. B. If not too busy then work it out if you have a past good history with the client. C. New clients get you buying the materials (perhaps some they want to use on their boat) and your labor of course.

Great tips! We buy nearly 98% but yesterday we didn’t video coming LOL 3 hours later boat is still broke.

Must have new parts in a box! No used parts!! With the understanding any extra labor or other parts will be billed at a higher rate!!

We TRY to install only parts that we buy! But today I slipped and let a guy talk me into us installing a macerator pump which we do not do black water .... long story short older gentleman needed help! Well to end the story both pumps he gave us were no good! He left us a 5 star google review today. We Tried to get him fixed.

If you’re replacing with their parts I would say no warranty unless it’s a product you would purchase and trust.

Yes we say no warranty too … 👍

I would not say never to customer parts. Availability may be a consideration but no warranty.

You are exactly right but make sure they are OEM and not a Chinese mark off part! No warranty!

If the customer wants to supply parts, then the hourly rate should go up by at least 20-25%, and no warranty should be supplied.

being an auto repair shop owner for 27 years customer supplyed parts is a pain. Here is what we did 1. part markup is part of our income so we charge 1 1/2 times labor 2. we very clearly inform customer if there part is wrong or bad they are paying all our extra labor 3. Most important NO WARRANTY... That being said there was a auto shop in PA that installed customer supply tierod end that part broke caused the car to crash and total the car then the customer sued the shop for a failed part that the shop did not even sell the case did not really go anywhere but the shop owner spent 10 grand in legal fees to defend himself

😭 that’s terrible but your exactly right! We rarely install their parts but we did yesterday and needless to say 3 hours later 2 pump installs and boat is still broke. I plan to do a video about it today!

"Would you let customers buy parts" Short answer.... yes. Long answer ....Depends. Both answers require you to approve the part as being safe. I would have a SIMPLE (broad) signed/texted/emailed waver that releases you from ANY liability tied to that part the customer provides. If that part is a product that is new to you that might take more time/research to install, does not fit/work or does not accomplish the task then the customer will pay your hourly rate. It's a bit of a gamble for the customer but not for you due to that option would be an hourly rate quoted job versus a job quote. Why not remove the door, take it to the shop to repair it? I think the bench repair would be good content for your channel for a pretty common fix that MANY folks deal with not only on boats. S

Matt was afraid of breaking the corroded hardware that was holding the door on! Owner wanted a quick fix in its place. Always have to be careful of liability and parts! We rarely install customer parts it’s just NOT worth it to us!

Trust the loved ones who tell you it is time to quit (driving, Boating, Flying, etc. Better if you can make the decision yourself.

personally re the door I would have epoxyed a nut to the back of the hole and used a stainless nut and bolt with loctite

Yes, I will let them buy their own parts, but there will be no warranty not even with the labor

Great philosophy 👍 love it!
@Allen-g1lАй бұрын
I would unless it's inferior to what they are going to pay for. Also it would void any of my warranty.

I’m all for letting a customer buy their own parts but then again I’m a customer. I know part of the boating repair business is making some money on the parts also so I’m thinking that most service companies don’t like that
@WillFixThat11 ай бұрын
It’s not so much the money it’s more the liability and when their part doesn’t work they want to blame you! Plus how long have they had that part rolling around in their boat?

Great idea .... keep in mind that its HOT here most of the year and Matt does the a/c work .... I find it rather boring! Just had a long time viewer stop by our shop yesterday and we talked for a bit and he said how much he loved a/c and I rolled my eyes. But Matt does miracles with getting people units to blow cold.
