Most people would be surprised at how a little change in camber or toe can affect tire wear or straight line tracking. In the UK, we have a mandatory safety inspection for every car over three years old. This is called the "Ministry of Transport" test (MoT). The history, status and mileage from every test of every car is publicly available on the government web pages. Additionally, the insurance company "write off" status for every car is also publicly available. This reduces the chance of a car having its mileage altered, stops dangerous cars being "inadequately repaired" and gives potential buyers an awareness of a car's history. The above keeps death traps off UK roads.

Let me give you peeps a tip when shopping for a used car: Tell the person selling it that you'd like to take it for a good, real-life test drive, and that it may take 45 minutes. Leave your car behind, be honest, don't rob the guy. THEN DRIVE TO YOUR MECHANIC who knows you're on your way. Have him put it up on a lift. I am a mechanic, and I can make a BASIC determination is SECONDS. Yes, a good inspection must go much deeper, but with rust like that shown starting at 1:25, I can shut down any further need for investigation. You should always befriend a mechanic, that's just a life hack. You may pay me $20 to hit my roll-on lift, but in the case shown, I could have saved you $6,480, and it would have taken SECONDS. The same advice goes for a home buyer- hire a home inspector, and if the seller has mentioned they don't like that idea after mentioning it previously, have him tag along as a "friend". As a consumer, YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT to protect your money. Anybody opposed to taking a car to a mechanic is the wrong person to buy from. Walk away.

Totally! But I also have seen how dealers can jam a customer into things they would never agree to up front. If you need a vehicle, and they financed your car, and you don't have a lot of money, you could pay a little more or...what are you going to do, walk away and sue them? Will you keep paying for the car or let them repo it? It sucks.

@@johnt.848 Lemon law refers to failed attempts to repair a car, usually a new car. I don't think it will help in such a case as selling a used car that's falling apart.

If anyone here also watches dashcam crash channels, that car at 1:00 would be one of those guys that a) the driver is constantly on their phone while driving too fast, and b) then looks up at traffic and leaves a 100' skid mark from one tire while barely slowing down, and then blames the car in front for 'brake checking'.

Here's an idea- get a car you are considering buying inspected BEFORE buying!

Nice Caddy-camino at the end. Likely a funeral home flower car. There was one sitting next to an autoparts store in my neighborhood in the mid 70's for $1200 but I was too young and didn't have the $$.

The next time you're at a stop light, look around at the other cars and wonder which of them might be in this video. Cars. They're not for everyone.

Am I fascinated how you can register such a car in USA. In EU almost every country has technical inspection, after green light you can regester it.

Why do people do the inspection AFTER they buy it?
@paulh65918 күн бұрын
Only to be promptly swindled by the same used car dealer a second time, when he willingly shelled out another $500 for the bubble gum and duct tap frame patch.

Besides the local shady shops, CarMax wouldn't let me get a pre-purchase inspection. Should be illegal.

Having an inspection AFTER purchasing is just well deserved

Some dealers won't allow that, like CarMax. Rather than blame customers, why not suggest better laws to protect them from getting cheated by dealers?

People often seem to forget that brake cleaner (in most parts of the world) is _extremely_ flammable. I would assume that most people would probably not hose down a hot engine with gasoline, but many will hose down a hot engine with brake cleaner, despite the fact that they are both super flammable. It’s definitely not the first time I’ve seen that happen. If you need to clean up an oily engine, use a degreaser and pressure washer. It’ll do a better job and won’t burn the car/shop down.
