I don't know how this is for people not in the field but as trained metal worker and industrial mechanic that completely switched fields it is cathartic to watch someones process that clearly has years of experience and a feel for what they are doing. There are loads of people that do good metal work but the ones that have a connection to the metal that goes beyond just numbers and measurements, that can feel what is right and what isn't are on another level and a joy to watch and work with. That body work segment scratched an itch that I didn't even realize I had. Thanks Derek!

I'm a real perfectionist both on and off the job, and it's always helpful and instructive to see a great example of getting 80% there with 20% of the labor. Sometimes that's really the difference between getting something decent done and getting nothing done at all.

I used to watch those same shows on spike as a teenager. My uncle's introduced me to the gearhead lifestyle as a young man and they were what I looked forward to every week. Most of my family was a GM only household but one uncle in particular was a mustang guy who pretty much set in motion the rest of my car obsession. As a teenager in the late 90's the 5 liter mustang was the top dog in my area. I never understood it until a friend of mine had an 85 GT that waxed all the local guys on the street. Track numbers didn't matter, it's what you could do at a stop light that set you apart.

One thing to note on oil based paints, with proper prep, hardener, and application they can look really nice. Just know that you really can't ever coat over them again with a urethane or enamel because traditional coatings are "hotter" and will eventually eat the paint below. On a positive note, tractor paints are slightly acidic and will kill rust. They do an excellent job at preserving vehicles!

Just did a similar level of paint job with a friend's son. He brought himself his first hotrod pickup and wanted to shine'r up a little bit.let him do most of the dirty work sanding and prepping. Done up in the dusty old shop. Turned out decent enough with some single stage paint that a guy can stand back 20' and squint one eye and feel pretty good about himself. The young feller was so thrilled and proud of himself for the work he put into his pride and joy. After a couple months of nights and weekends, ended up having a great time working with him. I think he learned a lot and I ended enjoy a project again just for the sake of doing a project. Can't wait to see him cruising around town this summer!

Get some aluminum duct tape - It works great for making reflectors in tail lights and turn signals reflective again. I've fixed up a bunch of lights like this. The tape isn't cheap - but a little goes a long way! It would likely make your tail lights twice as bright. For colorblind guys like me, this is a big help. I can't see red lights very well.

Check out an Aeropro a610 paint gun. $60, comes with a few different size tips for primer, base, clear. Sprays well. LVLP will have less overspray in your shop as well. I use it for spraying Rust-oleum.

When I was in high school I drove a ‘79 3/4 ton just exactly like this one. It was even white with 8 lug turbines. It was the first rig I ever worked on. It really brought back fond memories when I saw this. My mom got divorced and we needed grocery money, so I sold it when I was 17. It was promptly wrecked by the new owner. I’d give ANYTHING to have that truck back. Thanks for the trip down memory lane

My third vehicle was a 1974 Chevy c10 Cheyenne super 2wd long bed dark Carmine red and frost gloss white, and primer grey on spots on the passenger side door and the red oxide on the Dr side door and the grey sandable primer on the front fenders and the grey Chevy sport 77 truck hood junkyard non kinked $45 score .. i traded a car i never drove on the road but it was a very solid gm gbody car a 1983 metallic dark brown Buick Regal Limited 15 inch magnum Buick steel and black accents road rally wheels and the only bad spots on the car was the right side front corner of the fiberglass bumper filler was cracked and lost a small section out of it, and the door was scratched up and the right side mirror was knocked off from reversing out of the garage at night when the car was new and it never got fixed, was a 128k mile car had the window sticker paper and the factory 1983 Buick Regal and century owners manual and Delco sound system for the new for 83 dual shaft am fm stereo with etr..car had beautiful dark chocolate brown velour Limited pillow top interior and the stainless steel look of the guage cluster i loved that, and the dash was almost perfect considering it was 1995 the car was a 1983 with 128k miles, and the car came from Dayton Ohio and it was almost absolutely rust free.. atleast i didn't find any but my cousin has told me several times just being the front a arms on both sides it had holes in the frame and just behind the rear bumper on both sides so oh well the body was almost perfect and so was the interior with the exception being part of the headliner

What an amazing change! Totally agree with you - wasn't a lot of $$ but sure was a lot of skilled labor. Not just the time on the project, but your years of experience with this sort of work showed (as it always does). For me something goes wrong and I'm like "ah crap I don't know how to fix this now", but you just power through and fix it and nobody can tell! I love your long form videos, always makes me happy to see you post. I'm truly sorry for your loss, and love that you honored your Grandparents with the paint job - your buddy did a fantastic job. Much love bro!

I use that paint to paint trucks and trailers all the time. It is cheap but definitely needs reducer! Paint is thick! I also use the hardener as well for added shine and durability! I never videoed it! Next time i paint with it i will video for my channel! Keep it up Derrick! Great job!

@@WherEmEweeD i have never tried to polish this type of paint. Dont see why you cant but i cannot say. As for mixing balance, itsall about feel. You dont want to thick or to thin. Also gun tip size matters to. This paint is thick so if you can have a spray tip 1.8 size it sprays better. But more common tips are 1.4 so just have to thin it out. Best bet is pour paint in a mix cup like half a cup of paint and start off with adding 1 inch of reducer to it with a splash of hardener mix and try spraying a test area if it sprays nice good, if it takes forever to cover then its to thick needs more reducer. If alot comes out but takes a ton of coats to cover then its to thin and needs less reducer or more paint. Best advice i can give.
