The first one happened to me a year ago. My then 17 1/2 year old Ford Taurus was "acting oddly," and I took it to a local mechanic for a wheel alignment. He called me less than ten minutes later and said the car plain and simply could no longer be driven safely as the ENTIRE frame had rusted beyond salvageability. I got the car back, took it to my regular mechanic (he'd been out of town at the time the car was taken in for the alignment); he also owned a scrap yard at the time, so he bought the car from me, and I bought a very nice little Chevy Cobalt from him. It was rather frightening to find out what could have happened to me had the car fallen apart---as I had to drive our freeway at least once a week, 70 to 80 mph for a round-trip distance of 70 miles.

I would literally be on a "Patient States' video at the nearby hospital where mine would be, 'Patient states he blew a gasket in his brain after seeing the dumb s**t people do with their cars, then simply continue driving until the car literally falls apart on the road. Speaking of which, here's a little story from when I was young. I was walking home when a car driving up a nearby hill literally ripped in half. The back end just sort of fell off (looked like just behind the front seat) and spun wildly before hitting the curb, while the driver kept going for a while then slid to a stop, as if not quite sure what had happened. He then got out, stared at his rusted in half wreck... and just walked away, leaving it in the road.

I know people want save money and fix it themselves, but some of these so called repairs are crazy. I'm a certified F.A.A. Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic and can do most automotive easy to medium repairs myself with my toolset and skill set. But I won't tackle something outside my area of expertise or capability. I once worked with a mechanic who didnt know how to do safety wire safeties, I dont know how he passed the exam to get certified. In aviation, safety wire is like your signature and a sign of your workmanship. His safeties were terrible, wrong size wire, too loose and kinked wire. I told him I would redo the safeties, because I thought that they were a little loose and I had to sign off his work, as the inspector. I redid the safeties in a few minutes, which had taken him the better part of an hour to do. He asked me how I did that so fast, so I showed him how I did it, then I talked him through doing one himself which was much, much better than his original effort. He was a little uncoordinated, but with some practice his safeties got much better over time.

I was a shop mechanic in the early 2000's and never saw anything like the conditions commonly shown here. It seems the advent of the internet has actually made people more ignorant, plus the totally corroded away frames is new, they obviously use inferior steel now.

I had an old Horizon TC3 which had a tink-tink sound at the front wheels during low speeds. One day I stuck my head out the window and drove in circles: Yep,the FWD axle nuts had castle retainers over them with cotter pins, and the retainers were loose and made noise. A generous squeeze on the cotters with channellocks tightened the castle retainers enough to keep from rattling. 0$ fix!
