Butt Community Investment Program whereby H-E-B would contribute 5% of its pretax earnings to various nonprofit organizations throughout Texas. Also in 1934, he established the H.E. Butt Foundation, one of the first charitable organizations in Texas. The foundation focused on funding public school programs, establishing libraries and constructing recreational facilities. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Howard E Butt to the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity.

When the tornado wiped out cell towers, land lights in the poorest neighborhood in Minneapolis for 6 days, we were new neighbors. As soon as the storm passed, everyone poured out into the street and started checking on each other. All the chainsaws in the neighborhood risted until dark to clear the street on mature galleries trees. Everyone got out their grills to feast on food that wouldn't be safe later. The CUB FOODS serve hot dogs, pop and chips every late afternoon that week and set up a charging station for all the cell phones. 6 DAYS LATER, RED CROSS came by for the 1st time with sandwiches.

I've often said that a company that stands in front of their products, will have the best customers standing behind them. I'm from Texas. Houston, to be exact. I shop exclusively at HEB. And this is why. Also, I worked as grocery bagger when I was 15. I tip every time I buy something. It helps, and makes you feel appreciated. Tip your baggers!!

Hey Raccoon, you don't have to paid them back! What HEB had been doing is a pandemic community charitable donations, back to the community due to it's time of difficulties n hardship! All these give away, were merely initiated by kindness n love...of course, to support HEB's customers base...n to help the local communities; to assisted families with children that need support n food for their survival! Inasmuch, that these are tax deductible donation n tax write-off for HEB! Therefore, it seems to me that they were already being blessed 200 folds by Uncle Sam!

HEB can be reimbursed through their insurance due to loss of sales relating to the power outage. Food that would spoil would also qualify, but I don’t know if giving it away disqualifies them. Either way, HEB did the right thing. People needed the food, and they needed to get rid of whatever would go bad. In return, they received great publicity and customers for life. Although, from what I hear, they were already a Texas treasure. They aren’t in DFW, so I would hear lots of positive things about them from other Texans who moved here.
