When building up to plus4 instead of alternating top to bottom Ive been starting with lap to opposing sides then to top finishing with the adhesive tape lapping underneath just a small tweak thats yielded better feel I believe. At a club I worked at back in the '90s, a guy had G.P. full cord grips similar to today's Tour Velvet cord. But he would take a stiff wire brush and scrub his grips until they looked like they had hair. Went through grips like crazy, but he liked that feel. Good player too, better than scratch hdcp. Just a weird dude.

Love the videos. Can’t wait to try the stretch technique
@willchristensen4248 Жыл бұрын
I used to always install grips with tape only on the bottom hand end of the grip. This keeps the grip a bit undersize and levels out some of the taper as well. Grip still holds nicely and keeps the diameter down a bit without stretching it. You could use this method AND stretch it for an even smaller diameter result.

Great video! Gripping clubs myself has always seemed approachable, but I've not gone for it. This gives me even more incentive! Question of tip 2: will the club head's weight make it point straight down, or do I have to align the face of the club perpendicular to the ground? I love the adea of adding that rib as a reminder for proper placement, but want to make sure I get it in the right place!
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
You will need to manually adjust it. A few clubs might happen to fall perfectly perpendicular, but most will require manual adjustment.

Thanks for the tips. I do have one question. About how may wraps can you put under a grip before the additional stretching (and thinning) of the grip overcomes the additional thickness of the tape?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Will depend on the grip somewhat but really every extra layer of tape will thin it out a little. Best to just assume that each layer of tape is really adding 4/5th of the additional tape diameter.

Question for you AJ....if you install a 0.560 undersize grip on a 0.600 shaft does that take the grip size up? To say a regular? And how far would you need to stretch it ro retain its undersize? Love the channel by the way. 👍
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Probably would not need to stretch very much. The rubber will already be thinned out having to stretch over the .600 shaft. Different grips stretch differently.

I like the idea of the Lamkin 1150 crossline grip, 11 1/2 inches long versus 10 1/2 like all others, but they seem to be out of stock often. I've stretched grips close to a full inch further although some styles just won't cooperate without a lot of solvent, ha ha. Doing so I have to use full size build up tape from Golf works which is noticeably thicker, several wraps or the grips become a bit skinny.

When building up does it affect a soft grip and make it firm?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Yes it can. I did a video kind of on this topic way way back when I started the channel looking at the difference between a .580 ID grip and a .600. People always think the .580 would naturally end up thicker because there's more rubber to build up the smaller .580 shaft diameter. But when I put one of each grip on the same .600 diameter shaft, the two grips came out the same size. The big difference was the .580 was stretched more and felt much harder than the .600 grip. Same thing could be seen with building up grip size although the tape will add some cushion to the feel so might not be quite the same as my original video.

Is build up tape just regular masking tape? Not double sided like the normal gold grip tape?

Hi… first off I love your instructional videos! So… my question is .. I am installing a parallel shaft Mitsubishi MMT SHAFT in a head. The website said to tip the shaft 1.5 inches( it’s a six iron) I tipped it and noticed that the end of the shaft is solid … no hole. So when I try to install the shaft there is pressure apparently and I can’t get the head to stay on. What do I do? Is this how these shafts are built ? Thank you! Vern
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Did you buy a used shaft? That is really the only way you would have a sealed vent hole. Should have an opening and if it doesn't, you need to make one with a drill or punch.

If I was to add a rib and additional full length wraps and extra lower hand wraps. Should I put the rib under all the warps, directly on shaft. And should I add all the wraps face down to accentuate the rib?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
I would not do all the wraps the same direction as it can become difficult to get them to stay stuck as that seem gets bigger. As far the rib, I would stick it to the last wrap of build up tape before you put on the double sided final layer. Otherwise the rib will feel worn down under all the tape layers.
@jamesmc81 Жыл бұрын
Amazing, such a great answer. I'm going to get the golfworks ribs. I have a question about them: are they flexible enough to contour to round shape of the shaft from edge to edge? I've used some model making plastic and cut it down to the size of the golf works ribs. Unfortunately the plastic is too rigid. Therefore the edges don't curve around the shaft and sit flush against the shaft. The home made rib has basically tilted to one edge as soon as I installed the grips.

I've heard of using one layer of duct tape for the lower hand when making a +4 style design to avoid having to put on 4 layers of masking tape. Do you think this will work?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
No reason it can't. Only issue with one layer only, is that you can't stagger the tape in order to smooth out the transition so you end up with slightly more of a hump in the middle of the grip. Don't know that you would even notice it though.
