I can certainly relate to the data pronunciation. I prefer the softer a sound and pronounce it that way such a seemingly small distinction can cause confusion for some Ghanaians. There are other words or terms too, such as how you say water with er sound and they say it like wata. Or if you say elevator, some won’t know what you mean because they call it a lift. Or, if I ask or tell my taxi driver to pull over, he will not know that I want him to essentially park the car, usually for a brief moment for whatever reason. They also refer to plastic bags as rubber bags, or just rubbers. It’s best to be patient, and adjust to the way they speak, as you are in their country.

This is the first time I'm commenting on your channel though I've been a subscriber for quite some time. Good topic, thanks. As much as our brothers and sisters from the diaspora are welcome to Ghana, we don't want to dilute or destroy the Ghanaian culture. It would be a shame if Ghana becomes another western nation and I mean with respect to culture, traditional values and beliefs. This is my greatest worry at the moment. Integration into the Ghanaian culture should be paramount.

Culture should be progressive. Your Ghana already grew from western influence. Western influence has already been involved in your nation, for more than one century. Ghana is not what it was in 1700s . You literally wrote your comment on the platform of a Western Tech company. Growth is a holistic thing so if your Ghana ever experiences significant advancement then the culture will change. That's inevitable. The culture changing just means that people are changing their own mind, body, soul and spirit. People should be free to do that.

The greeting from right to left isn't about seniority. It is symbolic that you are coming in "good faith". The "openess of your hand" verses a "back hand" (which is offensive). Since you greet with your right hand and start on the right. The person you are greeting is always "met" with an open palm. "Openess", "goodness", "good faith" etc.

Hi Tony and Ayo My favourite KZbinrs.😊❤ Just to add what has already been said here, as Ghana is a former British colony, the English language and even the legal system are all based on British English and the British legal system. Therefore, it is not necessarily because English is the second language in Ghana, but the words or pronouncuation sometimes differ, between American English and British English. Even when Americans sometimes ask for the bathroom, here in the UK, some Brits, not used to speaking to Americans, can look a bit perplexed. Bath/Washroom -Toilet, ladies or gents Elevator - Lift Data - Data pronounced 'Dayta' Cookies - Biscuits Soda /Pop - Soft Drinks, Coke, Fanta, Sprite, etc, etc. Sidewalk - pavement I have actually been in the process of setting up a guide on my channel when I watched this great video, so I found it very interesting. Keep up the good work. 😊

I'm a Ghanian raised in Ghana but went to Liverpool for further education. Whilst there the people taught I speak posh because I spoke the Ghanian English accent. My sister who was born in the UK and raised in Hertfordshire came to visit me in Liverpool and I became the translator between her and the locals. Since back in Ghana, I once some Indias who wanted directions but we could not understand each other because of our differences in accent. Even those in UK can't understand each other what about the rest of us. Always slow down, pick your word one by one and don't think your accent is superior. Mistake most English speaking foreigner do.

I am an American married to a Ghanaian, one of the biggest shocks for me was one year we purchased gifts for my mother and sister in law and nieces,I wrapped them all up to look so beautiful and put them inside a box and shipped it to them for Christmas gifts. but when my sister in law went to pick up the package they made her unwrap all of the gifts in front of them. This was so upsetting to me. ( you know those gifts went threw so many X-rays and scanners). and to make her do that and now my baby nieces could not unwrap their gifts broke my heart.

Then these Ghanaians who have studied "Queens English", as you claim, have failed miserably!! The English accent Ghanaians have is not closer to British English than American English, far from it. The British and American will understand and relate with each other when speaking English a thousand times better than they could ever whilst having a conversation with your average Ghanaian. Ghana has a different cultural and historical makeup that uniquely influences the English language. That stands on its merit. It doesn't need claims of a better adaptation to the British language than other nations to be valid. I think it's high time certain Ghanaians stop obsessing about positioning Ghana as Britain 2.0.

It’s not a problem to be left handed. About 10 to 15% of Ghanaians are left handed. The only thing is to greet and shake hands with your right. You can always eat with your left hand or with spoon.

Just order food that requires a spoon or folk like rice. Don't order fufu and use a spoon to eat. It will be seen as disrespectful.

Once upon a time, I asked a street vendor in Kokrobite if she had a napkin. It seemed like I instantly turned into a space alien. Long story short, if you need a napkin, ask for “tissue” and you’ll get a napkin. 🤣

In west Central Africa it's a serviette, found that out in Cameroon, Guinea Equatorial and Gabon. Napkin or tissue is probably going to get you a space alien look also.
