Things I love about Ghana that are kinda personal... There is a lady in the compound behind us who gets up around 6:30AM and by 7AM she is walking around the compound singing a gospel song. The same one every day. It's in Twi and I don't understand the words, but I just love hearing it in the morning. I love going to my local drinking spot and watching the Saturday afternoon football match and blabbing with the workers there. I love how people know how to celebrate here. Celebrate the naming, celebrate the engagement, celebrate the life the has ended and the one year of the life that has ended. Ghana brings importance and joy to events that are seen more as obligations in "the west."

I'm not sure it's the politics that is so frustrating. It's that most people just put up with it. Ghanaians are so tolerant. But it's a blessing and a curse. If things are going to change then people will need to start getting angry about the political nonsense. Not just shrugging the shoulders and saying "it will be well."

I walked to school by myself from 1st grade through high school. Except when my Dad was off. And I had to wake him up and beg him. And you know how kids these days have their parents with them on the first day of college. That didn’t happen with me. I went up there signed up. I Went to orientation all by myself. I used to get irritated when a coworker would take a week off just to take his kid to college

If you set it up right, all your pre paid bills can be done on your phone. I found it irritating having to go out to pay bills when I got here at first until I sorted out that aspect of living in Ghana. By the way you guys are all looking very healthy, it must be the food, that is one thing I don't miss about being out of the states.

Between the infrastructure and scammery I think this is my last year. I am also not acclimating well physically. I can't eat the local food. People treat us well though but it's definitely foreigner treatment.

@@kwade9298 Everyone pays bribes; even the locals, so it's no way to avoid that. They'll just expect much more from you. You can of course refuse. My guy says he works for the state department and they'll generally let him go. If you refuse, any type of harassment can occur including detaining you on the street, having your car or property seized to being arrested. They generally don't arrest Americans because they don't want that consulate smoke, but they will hold you up for hours until you get annoyed and just give them 20 cedis. It's the price you pay for living here. The corruption is insane; also the begging has gotten extremely aggressive since the cedi dropped I have been grabbed and so has a friend after we told kids to go away. The scams come from your every day interactions. Buying fruit, getting your hair done and having repairs on your home. They think Americans are rich. If you are lighter and quiet they could possibly assume you are mixed, but one of your parents are Ghanaian. I do get mistaken for Ghanaian. There are "light skinned" Ghnaians--they may get called Obroni too. Once you start speaking they'll know you are American and all of the sudden tomatoes will be 50 cedi. It's worse for bigger items like cars and homes. Romance scamming is an industry here too. I honestly like Benin better in terms of scamming. Unfortunately the infrastructure is worse there. None of this will be changing soon, so if you come, the people will be kind although customer service is TRASH. you will eat good things, have fun at the bars and clubs and learn alot. But it is exhausting. This is not my forever home like I hoped.

I go through the same thing. I just don’t patronize the places I know that do this. Some people make it quite clear, while others mask it. Yikes... Ayo only likes the house-help and the beaches...(sometimes). I think it's safe to say that she's over it. 😬

Sometimes, l feel you guys over-stretch issues as if America is perfect in all things, here you are in Ghana you have helpers helping you and l guess you paying them a peanut. There is no way you could afford helpers or have ever had one. Ghana is not perfect so is America. There are so many places in America, l will choose Ghana instead. Chill. If America was perfect you will not go to Ghana. Be kind with your words and help us change the narrative and not to add to the problem
