I've been painting over 20 years and used both cheap and expensive, currently using a clone devilbiss for backyard work that cost $160 and I love it. The trick with cheap guns is to keep them as clean as the day you purchased them or they foul up and are never the same again.

Do you know if the nozzle can be replaced with a smaller one?
@satamanschmidt34284 жыл бұрын
Exactly as I predicted. On the flat panels you can dump enough clear on that the clear flattens by itself. On the vertical panels the difference in atomization might cause more runs with the cheap gun as that's been my personal experience. If you can avoid runs on the vertical panels you might have more orange peel with the cheap gun. To me it's the vertical panels where any advantage of the more expensive guns is more obvious as you just can't smash it on without having it run if the atomization isn't top notch.

I think an interesting comparison with the expensive and cheap guns would be to use a home compressor and see if theres a variance there. Fantastic video none the less, gives me hope!

Keeping your equipment clean and in good repair has more to do with useful life than price. To borrow from my other training, it's more about the skill of the person pulling the trigger and the quality of the the ammunition than the price of the gun. Well done presentation. I have very cheap spray guns and higher quality/priced spray guns. The main reason I prefer my more expensive guns for base and clear...they are a bit lighter and feel better in my hand. Spraying with a gun he's comfortable with has more to do with the finished product than the price of a painter's spray gun. Thank you for the comparison.

Hi. I went to a Specialist Jaguat day last weekend and l really regret not purchasing a £15 gun that looked pretty damn close to my SATA. If nothing else it would have been ideal for priming. Thanks for the show! And it's great to see someone actually wearing all the correct gear. Well done!

Always enjoy your videos - easy to follow - I am in the position of deciding between a cheap or more expensive gun - will probably end up with a better quality gun, even though I'm an amatuer, I still like to see a good finish
@satamanschmidt34284 жыл бұрын
As an additional comment the cheapest spray guns made (NOT CHEAPEST SOLD) is the 3M Accuspray spray guns made entirely of plastic. They charge $200 for an injected molded plastic gun with disposable spray heads that can't cost them any more than $5 to make. The point I’m making is that they spray very well. There has been little change in the science of spray guns since Iwata introduced its split nozzle design that pre-atomizes the finish. All of the rocket science has already been done and the copycat guns can be very good now.

Thanks, Dave. Great comparison for guys like me that aren't pros, aren't wanting to be pros, but just want to do one or two jobs at home and achieve the best results we can. It's good to know that we don't need to spend a fortune to get started and that we should focus on things like technique and such instead of about the gear.

Would have to wonder if it would be worth using the cheap guns more often and throwing them out when done - the cost of time and materials to clean a $25 gun (or a $700 gun). Use it and discard. Also shows the value of skills - No doubt the countless hours of painting you have make a HUGE difference in performance/finish that the average person might achieve with either gun.

Just goes to show it’s not about how much you spend on equipment, it’s about how you use it. I bought a HVLP gun at a pawn shop for $7 and it was a cheapo. Had to be extensively cleaned up but now looks new inside. I think I’ll give it a go to paint an old Dodge truck with.

Good paint and especially good clear coat will make any gun look better. I would like to see you try the test again with something in the line of 5 star clear coat to see if their is a difference. I killed myself buying cheap clear coat for years. It made me work twice as hard cutting and buffing.

Once or twice per year DIY will do well with cheap gun, if cleaned properly every time! 5-6 working days a week is another thing. The right compressor is more the question for DIY, often they will use a inferior one. And if they bought a 500 bucks gun it's a sour lesson to spend a bundle on the adequate compressor... Left the painting 83 and jumped into carpentry. Still do some jobs now and then. But am woody to the core 😂 Spray painting today has come a long way, 👌👌👌

Is not only the tool, but who is using it. Give a noob some pro equipment and it will not ended well... I mean the tools and equipment will not going to do all the job by themselves no matter they are the most expensive you can give him, but give a pro some cheap equipment and the results will be very good, not that perfect but outstanding at least and in some cases it will be almost at the same level of the professional and expensive equipment. And of course, all depends on how often are you going to use it. For a DIY cheap tools are ok, but for a daily work or professional auto painting, you better stick with the most reliable equipment and that is never cheap.
