I needed a small bit of brick to fix a step for my neighbor. A few minutes with a hammer and chisel and I have the piece I need. If I had a larger project, I'd probably rent or buy a saw, but this method is fine for small projects, and if you have the time, would suit large project fine too. At one time, it was the only way.

Thanks. I wrecked two cement pavers so far. I'll try your method.

Great! I want to make a pizza oven made of brick and I am a girl who is scared of power tools. :( I can definitely handle a chisel though! Thanks for sharing!

It's mostly the noise...Wear plugs...Get past your fear...You won't be sorry....As a girl that has owned her own chop saw, skill saw, reciprocating saw, jig saw etc for most of my life...There is nothing I can't do...I only need my husbands help when something is too heavy...Wanted to know how to split a brick paver for my edging project to finish up this summers improvements...Easy, peasy...Girls that can run power tools are like diamonds....Rare!...Start with a jig saw, chop saw, skill saw and finally a reciprocating saw...You can do it!...

I've used a mason's hammer and regular hammer in combination for this. The mason's hammer is the chisel, and protects your hand whereas a chisel doesn't.

Definitely. The chips that can break loose from certain stone can hurt. But for block and bricks it's usually not so bad.

great video! your chisel looks nice and sharp. does sharpness matter?

It's more about having a well defined point than it is about sharpness. If there are big knicks or flat spots in the chisel, the line will not be crisp and may wander making the break jagged/crooked/or completely in the wrong area.

@@captainahab5650 That is helpful thanks! not really a point on the chisel I have . no wonder i can't get a defined line.

Is that the smallest piece that you chisel off? Or can you chisel off smaller parts?
