I think that's why celebrities are better participants at this. They have pretty thick skin from the years of harsh criticism and rejection in the media and from people in their industry. Average, everyday folks aren't cut out for being roasted, especially by close friends and family. Even if they manage to laugh it off, they will always think about it when they are around those people, and hold it against them (even if they keep it to themselves).

Nah, if you're not full of insecurities and somewhat confident getting roasted can be hilarious and fun as fuck. As long as people aren't genuinely trying to be mean at which point it stops getting fun and ends up a little uncomfortable.
