Mark,I recently acquired a 50 caliber Hawken to go with my 45 caliber Kentucky rifle, the 50 was in a pitiful state all rusted, parts missing, and the stock was in terrible condition, but I got her looking like new again...no more rust,got the parts I needed from deercreek products, and refinished the stock !! Both are #11cap guns Mark, I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos as I don't get to shoot blackpowder near as often as I would like, so I just watch you have all the fun !!! Fun to watch Mark. I wonder if two like size balls would have the same results as splitting one? Say 2 440 or 445 balls. Maybe you have already done that. Took the Kibler Woodsrunner out a couple times lately that sure is a fun rifle to shoot. I love mine. Thanks for taking us along

That was interesting, 2 shots looked to be pretty devastating on those jugs. I'm wondering what would happen if you cut the ball but left that little lead hinge, put a piece of paper in the center, then load it split down, might expand and hold together 🤔 Awesome Video 👍

Thank you for another great video . I wonder how the balls would do it you left that bit of lead connecting them would they stay together and split hitting the target? Side note on the voids in the balls factory swaged balls while perfectly round can have the same voids causing accuracy issues .
@blackpowdermaniacshooter5 ай бұрын
I wonder if Hornady & other round ball makers has voids in their round balls. I need to cut one open & see for myself. Thanks for watching my friend.....
@jamessullivan11525 ай бұрын
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter It was either Hornady or Speer . The voids could also be found using a very flat granite measuring block . Setting them down on the flat polished surface would let them roll a bit so light side was up . I do not have access to anything like that today to even try . I forgot to mention maybe a fine jewelers saw would work to saw balls in half then a knife .

Hey Mark, thank you for the video. I have a .69 flintlock smoothbore and I ordered the .678 round balls for it. Found that I should have ordered the .66 round balls, my resolution was to actually crimp the larger .678 round balls with vice grips to size and they have a nice fit. They turned out to almost have a serrated surface with two round ends. I was able to hit a bullseye with one of them at 50 yards. Think you could do a video for anyone who might come across the same issue? Would be interesting to see new ways of how to adapt oversized round balls in the field. Thank you

Legend, and a biography of Danial Boone that was not very acccurate, claimed that when Boone was kept by the Shawnee they made him work as a gunsmith. He took parts from various guns and made a firing weapon, shot 1/2 balls out of it to hunt on his way back to his family. Hard to tell if it was true. I read his biography perhaps 60 years ago, and that always stuck in my mind.. So, I cast 1/2 balls and tried that, but I don't even remember the results.
@blackpowdermaniacshooter5 ай бұрын
I've tried shooting smaller balls...they aren't too accurate.

Interesting. Years ago I got curious as to what would happen if I were to double ball my .50 Hawkin rifle. To my surprise it would consistently vertically stack about 3 inches apart at 50 meters.

Cannon on sailing ships used to fire canon balls like this, except they were connected by either a bar or chain. Purpose was to fire at the masts of the other ship and try to tear the sails & rigging apart. Probably near impossible to cast rifle ammo like that.
