I tried doing this a few years ago when my friend dryballed my .44 flint pistol. Problem is that if the ball and patch are rammed all the way to the breech, they will block the introduction of power via the vent. Perhaps I didn't try hard enough to force more in. I ultimately ended up using a long drill bit in a brass sleeve to protect the bore, but it took some doing.

HA! its 2024 and I'm cutting up a lead roof boot too! Use an old hibachi if you dont have a lead melter thingy. Only a small fire and crucible, coals work great. Outside of course and don't breathe the fumes.
