The saponins (soap-like compounds) in related plants is a fish poison but may not be poisonous to people or warm blooded animals. The purpose of fish poisons is to stun or kill the fish which is then eaten. Soybeans are an example of a common crop that contains high levels of saponins. Oats and spinach are two other examples.

Your adventures are fantastic and have been a huge inspiration to my nerdy self, covering my two little acres with every fruit tree that I can, for the sake of their level of hospitality. I've even got a greenhouse with caimito, mamey sapote and rollinia inside, and about 25 young pawpaw trees. Come through Georgia (the state) sometime, town called Social Circle (no, the town name isn't a joke)

What a smart taxi driver. He drove them all over the country, looking for a fruit that he knows that he has at home. That's gonna run up a bill. Then last minute he said, let me take you to my house, you can find it there. That's another bill. But at least they got free fruits from the deal, and we get a nice adventure video.😊

Black walnut? Not the same species as the European walnut (Juglans), or is it? And why is it illegal?
@transecho
@transecho 10 ай бұрын
@@erzsebetkovacs2527It's the same genus (juglans). It's illegal to fish with the hulls because the US generally forbids fishing with toxins as it can kill fish that are not the legal size afaik.
@erikjohnson9223
@erikjohnson9223 10 ай бұрын
@@erzsebetkovacs2527Juglans nigra (there is another one on the West Coast, but I forget the name, maybe Juglans hindsii). The tree is legal (though notorious for killing many of its neighbors--especially tomatoes and apples though pears survive--through the allelopathic chemical, juglone) and is generally the USA's most expensive timber. Nuts are edible but a royal pain to extract. Many Americans enjoy black walnut ice cream (they have a much stronger, "woodsy" flavor than your Juglans regia), but due to expense and processing difficulty, it isn't particularly common in other food applications. The ground shells are sonetimes used in drilling muds. What *is* illegal is fishing with poison (or dynamite for that matter), though in extreme cases, on *isolated* lakes/ponds, landowners or park rangers may be authorized to kill everything in order to eliminate an invasive species.
