In this video I race the cricut machine to cut out a simple pouch. Who is faster? Me and the rotary cutter or the Cricut Maker 3?

I am 68 1/2 years old and just bought a lil sewing machine. And I’ve been using my Cricuit for cutting materials & faux leather because I don’t cut accurately 😂. I enjoyed your tutorial comparison. I’ll be watching more of your tutorials❣️

I find it all depends on the pattern pieces straight forward pieces like these are quicker by hand but pieces like say pursepal are quicker by cricut as you have the slots and zipper cutout wich can be fiddly

When using a different pattern with curves and notches, I think the circuit might come out ahead. Having to cut out a pattern to trace or pin then cut with scissors or even some lines with a rotary cutter, I think the cricut will be faster. If you were making multiple bags and had a couple/few mats you’d be cruising right along. Fun to see how close in time this style pattern was. I just got a maker and am excited to use it soon. Some projects with deadlines have to come first.

I think that another advantage of using a cutting machine is that you can multi-task. You can get your hardware or cut your zipper while the machine is going. It will still save you time in the end.

I have a Cricut Explore Air 2 and i cut fabric on it only once. but this is a great idea to use it to cut fabric. i know i will have to use heat and bond to put on my fabric before cutting (i will also have to buy a new mat for fabric)

Your pattern seems to be just rectangles which, of course, would be faster by hand. However, I use my Cricut most of the time when I cut purse patterns which have curves or even boxed corners. It is much more accurate than by hand. I wish you had indicated which blade you used. Most of the time I use the rotary blade. Perfect cuts every time. Thank you for this video.

I did use the rotary blade as I do for all fabrics unless it’s leather where I would use the knife blade. Thanks for reminding me!

I’ve finally started using my Cricut Maker (which I bought used 3 or 4 years ago 😮). The second thing I cut was the Pocket Pal in garment weight leather! It was amazingly quick compared to trying to hand cut all the card slots. Which I would have never even tried.

Very true! I can cut out a purse pal in less than 10 minutes on my Cricut. It would take me at least three times longer by hand. Maybe I’ll do something like that next and show how I set it up in design space for cutting ❤️

I am a new Cricut owner and I am chomping at the bit to cut out bags and embroidery appliqués. what I can't figure out is how and what I need to get to the Cricut. I'm pretty sure it involves an SVG file but I don't know how to start. if you want to change the size of a appliqué can you do it? I'm lost! I have an old Cricut that uses cartridges and I've had a lot of fun with it, but I wanted this new one primarily to cut fabric but I don't know how to start. Thank You!

Can you cut fabric, say 4.5 inch squares in several layers?
@madeuphere
@madeuphere 5 ай бұрын
I don’t think layering would work as it would be difficult to keep the layers from shifting.but you could put a fabric piece 12” by 24” on a large mat and cut quite a few squares very quickly and accurately!
@raclac3770
@raclac3770 6 ай бұрын
The hand cut could have been done considerably faster if you had folded the fabric and cut both pieces at the same time for both the exterior and the lining.
@madeuphere
@madeuphere 6 ай бұрын
True it could however I never get accurate cuts when I stack fabric or cut on the fold. The fabric tends to shift.

If you use design space for Cricut you can use my SVG files here design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/65a336e0fd260e64607f9230. I usually draw my pattern out for simple items like this using shapes and the text features for labelling. I will do a more in depth video showing my design process soon! Thanks so much for watching.

I use my Cricut Maker a lot for cutting out bag patterns. I love the accuracy of perfectly cut pieces. I’ve cut cotton, vinyl, cork and canvas but not waxed canvas, I’m afraid it will gunk up the blade. The only thing I’ve tried that didn’t cut great was some luxe nylon. Edited to say, love your channel, anything with bag making and the Cricut, I’m here for it!

I usually have two mats going so I can just pop the second one in as soon as the first one is done. I also use a rolling pin for making sure the fabric is adhered to the mat. Doesn’t everyone have a rolling pin in their sewing room🤪

Quick question. How do you get the shapes, including any markings, into the software? I would use my machine for cutting everything but very few designers include svg’s. I’ve found that the process of creating the svg’s on my own is extremely tedious and time consuming. And some I completely gave up trying to convert. It’s usually the ones with unusual shapes, which are the ones I need the machine for the most.
@madeuphere
@madeuphere 6 ай бұрын
Most of the patterns I cut are ready made svgs that I have purchased, or designed myself. I find keeping the cutting charts (if sizes are included) handy makes this process faster. Alternatively, you could print the difficult to draft piece out, assemble and then measure the lines to create your own template pieces. Luckily, more and more designers are including svgs for pieces that will fit on a Cricut mat, but understand the frustration when they aren’t included.

Have you tried to cut vinyl, canvas or leather? I have been thinking of trying to cut sewing pcs with it but wish the cricut was wider than 11.5 inches
@madeuphere
@madeuphere 6 ай бұрын
I almost exclusively cut vinyl canvas and cotton. I use a strong grip mat and a rotary blade using moleskin setting for vinyls and canvas (waxed canvas does not stick to the mat so I do that by hand) I have cut leather with good success but you need to make sure to tape it down well and use a knife blade.

I dont think it was fair to make the cricut have a speed test against manual cutting. I would've been impressed if you'd shown how the cricut won hands down regarding, accuracy and cutting multiple small pieces and how you can get on with sewing whilst the cricut was cutting.
@madeuphere
@madeuphere 7 ай бұрын
Fair point. I had no idea who would be faster, but I do know if I was cutting more intricate pieces the Cricut would have beat me hands down on both speed and accuracy.
