Matsurie N. I'm betting it's partially a coping mechanism, but also just try getting in his head and following his reasoning. Imagine being young, the adrenaline, walking on a razor's edge, the feeling that everything in your life before you has led to this moment. You'll feel a sense of purpose never before felt. He might express it in a way that feels foreign to you but just try to getting into his head. Another important part, imagine getting a bond of brotherhood with your peers that's unexplainable in civilian life, being able to trust people _unconditionally_ (even if you dislike said people) and then see them killed before you, for no reason. Witness civilians getting killed for no reason. Then find the people that are to blame for that (I don't want to get into politics and who is to "blame"). Of course you will want revenge, or feel righteous for killing them. Some will act like they would stand above that but they'll never know for real. All these feelings he expresses might not be as unthinkable as you may feel, he just expresses them more bluntly. As I said, people don't want to think about these things, because it scares them. Everyone has this potential.

The way some Americans talk about the war in Irak or Afghanistan creeps me out. They seem to generalize the whole population to be Taliban and use it as an excuse to justify why they are leading a war. But they often forget or ignore the fact that the Talibans are minorities in those countries. this man is absolutely fascinating to me - I will never forget seeing him in the war video years ago and seeing this video checking in with him again I was so excited to watch. The way he talks about war is a completely heartbreaking in such a different way than I've ever heard other veterans speak. This man, I will argue, is extremely intelligent. He sees war for what it is - nasty, sickening, and brutal and speaks about it in such disgusting ways and so bluntly that it really makes me believe that it is a part of humanity that I will never experience that cuts to your core and makes you evaluate every part of the human spirit. I don't support or believe a thing that he says in my personal core. I am a pacifist at heart, but damn...he's been places in his psyche and has had war pervade his body in ways we as civilians will never know. I would love to just sit down, and have dinner with him and just listen to him speak. There is so much pain, anguish, and intelligence in him that I want to understand.

I respect this guy for his decision to join the ARMY and his willingness to be on the front lines, truly I do. HOWEVER his opinions and views of war and the decision(s) to kill insurgents are merely that, opinions. I can say this because I too am a fellow service member (Proud member of the Marine Corps) with multiple combat deployments under my belt (07-2, 09-1) and though I myself engaged the Taliban on many occasions, killing others ALWAYS, regardless of reason, leaves an impact with an individual. There is no exception....

The things he says are chilling, but the point is that it's also deserving of some sympathy. This "war is rad" mentality was his personal way of getting through it. Maybe he needed it, maybe he didn't, but it got him through. Then when he comes back home he's expected to pretend he didn't enjoy any of it in order to fit into society. You can imagine there must be a lot of urges and reinforced habits he has to suppress in day to day life now just to avoid being an outcast, so it's important that he has a space like this where he's allowed to really talk about it. There are definitely moral questions that can be asked about why he joined in the first place and whether Cut should try giving more of a voice to soldiers from the other side. But there's also no denying that he's had traumatic experiences, so I don't think it helps anyone to assume he is entirely at fault for ending up this way.

I understand where this veteran is coming from, He found a way to mentally not feel bad for taking a life. Which honestly these men and women in the military are giving up their mental health along with time with there own family TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY and others. So if a vet has to find a different perspective to look at what he has done to mentally cope and not feel guilty then that shouldn't bother anyone. He's going to school and growing as a human being to help support other vets just like him. He wouldn't be able to do this if he sat at home and beat himself up about every life he has had to take.

I saw his video a few months ago and at first thought he was batshit, but after watching it again I kind of respected his opinion on war. After all, and just like he says in this video, most of us weren't there. Despite the fact that I may not agree with what he says, war is something I will most likely never experience, I will never really be able to stand in his shoes. And his opinion is as valid as Lonnie's or as the opinions of the other vets. I'm glad to see Josh recognizes that his opinion is his own and doesn't reflect how all vets think about war, and that he genuinely cares for the mental health of veterans.

His mindset is objective, he sees that he has to kill a target, and the way he's made that easier for himself is reminding himself that those type of people are absolutely bat shit insane, who will use children to suicide bomb him, just to kill him. If you looked at everything in life, and saw all the objective right and wrongs in life, you wouldn't step out of line at all, he doesn't lead by subjective or morals, he leads by objective values, and that's something that everyone should understand, use objectiveness in your jobs rather than deciding on morals, he used objectiveness on his job, and that's good.

I moved to DC from Ireland last year and immediately noticed the culture change being surrounded by so many military, feds and vets. It was a bit of a shock at first hearing (mostly) men talk like this but I really grew to respect those people. There was something just very raw and real about them. We can't shame them for having these views when realistically unless you were there you're just never going to fully understand.

Guy is on point on many things war is like. I can relate and agree with most if not all. It is fun but not your same fun like playing a game or enjoying a day out with your friends on a Saturday night. It’s fun in its own way. It builds connections deeper than anything else you’ve ever had or will have. It gives you a purpose in life and every time you cheat death you feel a little bit more invincible. War is beautiful yet chaotic. It is missed by many and I guess only people that have seen it will understand this. As a fellow infantryman I can say Josh knows what he is talking about and I also share the same goal that we are the only ones that can help our brothers. I am going to the army hopefully soon and been thinking about how I should feel if I hurt civilians and tbh it's a gutting feeling "mind you I witnessed two war zones before during my life" I have seen people who have nothing to do with fighting turned to charcoal and it was a feeling I don't want anyone else to feel. I think my way of leading that life of being a soldier would be to always remind myself that I am not just there to only serve my country but to help these people that we came to help in the first place and do all I can to help them lead a better life while destroying what stands in the way of their progression. Maybe it's a naive way of living my life but I think that's the soldier I will be when I join.

People in the comments don't realize that calling him crazy is literally the worst thing you can do. When you are in a war zone you have to learn to kill or be killed, you have to witness people die and it will be people you know. You grow a hatred for the enemy on the other side and that is really good during a war for the soldiers, nobody will stop any soldier from thinking they are worse than animals since it makes them fight better, it's not weird or wrong that he enjoyed killing because that´s what he did from 18 - 24 which is a really fucking long time to be in that mindset. Nobody should blame him, he even admitted his own faults in this video yet 90% of the comments are how this guy is insane and should be "monitored closely". My father has talked a lot about my great grandfathers time in WW2 and how it effected him. He apparently even during his death bed (old age) died with a disgust and hatred for Germans. It was so filled in his mind the hatred he felt when he lost friend after friend on the battlefield and with all the propaganda it stuck with him. If you think its not normal for soldiers to feel this kind of disgust for the enemy you haven't talked or read into war from a soldiers perspective. Josh I know you won't read this but I want to say you are a true legend for coming out and talking and advocating for mental health especially for soldiers I have PTSD as well but from non war related things and it was extremely hard for me to accept the fact that I needed help and that came from the fact that I have always been taught that men are supposed to suck up and take it in my family. Most of these comments are just basing their opinions on morals and subjectiveness rather than objectiveness, they think being nice to the enemy will help in war, and sadly those soldiers learn the hard way that isn't going to work. I honestly just see war as a dangerous job, that has an objective, kill your targets and win the war, that's it... that's it, and hating the enemy and loving to kill the enemy is even better, because then you grow a passion to be the best at killing those targets, it's the same as hunting... that's all it is, I don't understand why it's always morals with these people, this wasn't vietnam people, this was iraq war, where they used children as suicide bombers, those people were terrible people.

He was stationed in Sarawbi, and it seems like he wasn't fighting against an army of a specific country, he was fighting against Taliban. I guess he was lucky in that way, because if I was in war against *only* people that joined an organization that was devoted to killing a specific sector of society (like the Taliban) I could do it.
