@@peterthecatlady4976 The cycle of misogynistic gender roles which disproportionately place responsibilities and restrictions on the women of the family (cleaning the home, dressing well, taking care of siblings, cooking, needing a male family member with you to go out in public, stricter curfews, etc.), while the men get by with hardly any. Honestly this is a theme in all communities (even in traditionally matriarchal ones), but very prolific in that of ethnic/racial minorities.

Those parents are enabling that boy to be a man baby. When he turns 20 and has yet to move out or make a contribution to the household income they're gonna be like "Where did we go wrong?" "How could this happen?" "How come he hasn't matured and become his own man?" I witnessed this happen a bunch in my Mexican family with my brother. We practically hated each other up until maybe a year ago when I graduated high school and he realized I was gonna be leaving for college soon. We mended things over the summer a lot, which was really great actually.

I really felt for the girl who raised her younger sister. I was eight years and twelve years older than my two younger siblings. When my youngest sibling was born, my mom had a mental health crisis and then became addicted to alcohol. I raised them until the youngest was 18 and settled in college, only then did I live by myself for the first time. It's a strange feeling as you feel like both the parent and the friend but the dynamic definitely shifts more into sibling territory as they become adults.

middle child in a hispanic family here. my older sister and me never had as much freedom to go out and hang out w friends as my brother has now (he’s 17). we were just talking about this the other day tho, he’s fullt aware that my parents have less restrictions when it comes to him bc he’s a guy. it was a breath of fresh air hearing it from him tho.

That ending got me. I lost my older sister at 19. She was 26 at the time. Love your sibling and try to mend any conflicts you have with them. I didn’t get that chance and I think about it a lot.
