We had the exact same problem with our family dog as Flora had. She was attacked once and after that chose fight over flight when she saw other dogs she didn't know. She was a large dog that you couldn't just scoop up and carry off so there were some really scary moments, thankfully no one ever got hurt but walks were nerve-racking and of course she immediately noticed that we were nervous. We trained it out of her by pretty much faking confidence(body language, voice, smiles) and positive reinforcement(treats, toys). She was lovely to walk for the rest of her years but boy were there some moments I wouldn't wish on anyone.
@BondiVet2 жыл бұрын
So good that you were able to train her out of it, that wouldn't have been easy ❤🐶
@brigidtheirish2 жыл бұрын
The one pitbull we had board with us that couldn't be let out with other dogs was a similar case. Another dog attacked and badly injured her, leaving her terrified of other dogs. Though, in her case, usually stuck to flight with no knowing when she'd suddenly switch to fight. Around people, though, she just wanted love and reassurance. At least for a while. Poor thing also had some sort of dog version of dementia, possibly caused or complicated by the attack. As she got worse, more things terrified her until didn't recognize her own family and had to be put down.

I feel like a lot of these vets try really hard to find solutions to people's pet concerns and it's really inspiring to see. Not just that people reach and then LISTEN to the advice but that the advice is personally tailored for each situation. Animal anxiety is very real and Dr.Chris showing that her having confidence in her dog would improve the dogs confidence was actually really rewarding to see.

Yes, Kate, cats are all different, but they can all have bad habits! We have several cats, the only male (neutered) loves to be outside most of the time. One of our females (the oldest) left home & went next door to live, where she is the only one. The next oldest cat stopped using the litter box for a really long time (we have to get rid of our carpet) when we first got the male & another little female who was killed by dogs in her 2nd year. Now she is using the box again, thankfully, but I did have to buy her calming collars for a long time. We have found the only upholstery fabric that holds up to a naughty cat (we also have large scratching posts) is the faux crushed velour looking with no discernible threads running through for claws to snag. Good luck!
@kellybraun7048 Жыл бұрын
Our cat is highly intelligent, has high energy, and very attention-demanding. He an emotional support cat, and these qualities are what we looked for to meet the specific emotional needs. However, he does scratch the carpet & furniture when he feels neglected (he’s not). He has things he’s allowed to scratch, he uses them, he knows the difference between his scratch things and things he’s not allowed to scratch. We use silicone nail caps for travel, to protect others’ belongings. However, his nails get sensitive and close to the quick as the caps come off, so we don’t use them constantly and let the claws grow. We do regularly clip or grind his claws to keep him from scratching us accidentally (he doesn’t hurt us on purpose), but he’s used to it-I have him in my lap unrestrained as I do his claws. Putting nail caps on takes two humans because of adding the glue. We’ve found that putting the cap on, then taking it off to add the glue, helps it fit more comfortably and with less chance of upsetting our fur baby. For the sake of our own furniture and carpet, we’re using positive reinforcement when he uses the scratch items, scolding and dominance (thank you, Jackson Galaxy) when he uses the wrong thing, and making adjustments to his environment to constantly stimulate him (new toys, teaching new tricks, walks outside, car rides, etc). When we stimulate him enough, he misbehaves less (and wakes me up less during the night, lol).

By putting those nails thiniges you cat cant scratching anymore. By scratching the cat also trains the muscles of its front legs Scratching is used as part of territorial communication. The cat thus marks its habitat. Glands, located between the pads of the cat's feet, secrete odorants (pheromones) and sweat, which form a unique scent when mixed.

I wonder if it would help Flora to have her owner meet with Grace's owner, 1-on-1, to work on a strategy based on scent. If Flora could meet Grace's owner while he is wearing or holding something with Grace's scent on it & let her get used to both of their scents (& then vice versa)...perhaps that, along with the continued positive encouragements, would help a little bit? Like Scott said - they may not be "best buds", but they could at least both be calmer & Flora might not even have any aggressive reaction. Just curious.
