The desk aquarium is doing very well. The plants have fully adapted and are doing a great job of cleaning the tank. I've not noticed any losses of shrimp at all.
As you will see, i've decided to switch to sand at the front of the scape. I love the pearl weed and want to have a carpet of it at the front of the vase. It' is much easire planting into fine sand than aquasoil and the sand should keep the plants in place a lot better when working on such a small scale.
Do you like the new full look of should i trim back the plants a lot more? I like the stems from the back growing tall and across the scape. Do you?
As usual, don't forget to like and subscribe. It's the best way to support the channel for future content :)

Why return the duckweed when it grows like crazy. At least in my tank it does. When I do water changes and trimming I throw a generous amount away, and new duckweed replaces it in a matter of days. Then next water change it's rinse and repeat... A few weeks ago when I returned from a longer trip (2 weeks away from home) the tank turned into an unsightly underwater jungle. I even had fish and shrimp die-offs because of the plant overgrowth. :D

A pleasure to watch as always! Now for some questions: Is your shed insulated? How well does it handle temperature swings summer vs winter? How is it heated? Is it cooled in any way during the summer? I know UK winters are vastly milder than our Canadian ones but I’m curious. Especially as a similar setup here would have to deal with -40c winter lows in January and February and +40c summer highs in July and August. Thanks!
@MDFishTanks
@MDFishTanks 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks.Yes, shed has an inch of polystyrene insulation on all walls and the roof. The winter will be heater with a oil heater on thermostat. Can't tell you temp swings yet as haven't had a winter yet. I do know that it didnt need cooling in the summer. we have had a couple of 30 degree plus days this summer and the shed has been at 25 degrees with no problems for fish of plants.

My Duck Weed looks different than anybody else's. I scooped a handful of it out of Mentor Marsh in Mentor Ohio a few months ago. Late spring. I know our Marsh here is special as it is the largest Marsh on the Great Lakes but....it can't be THAT uncommon! The Headlands over flow into Lake Erie. All the Great Lakes are connected in some way be it a stream or something much bigger. To add to it, there's a canal from the ocean to Lake Erie! Lol How am I not seeing this in more places? My wonder is....am I not seeing it because it goes dormant even if it doesn't get below 65*? That can't be because it propagates freely. So freely it covers every inch of open water in the Wetland for miles by this time of year. The 2 tanks its in are at 80* It has taken off but, not like I expected. The books say it's Lemna Minor but it gets a frilly leaf when mature. I'm wondering....Mentor Marsh being the special thing it is....Is my Duckweed specific to this area? That's it! Taking pics when I get back and asking this question properly! Lol

Can you please tell me how you keep larvae and bugs out without a lid. I tried this and it was running alive after a couple of weeks. Thanks

@@MDFishTanksWe do have a large koi pond close to the back door which attracts mosquito although it's flowing not stagnant so it could be that. Thanks anyway. Maybe I will just have to keep lids on everything.

Your tank is so beautiful! I am hoping to make my own soon and I have a couple of questions: Do you recommend using a ring to corral the duckweed and allow more light to enter the lower portions of the tank? Also, what species of snail is in your tank?

I saw the vid you did with Aquarium Coop. I think you said something about running 12 hours of light on all tanks - is that correct?
