Salam Hira. How are you? I have applied to Oxbridge for PhD and am so worried about not being accepted. I am a social science student and my MA gpa was 6.1/7 from Australia, not that high. I have no publication, only three and half of years teaching experience. Your videos really helped and encouraged me. I have applied to more than two universities. A PhD is a must in my field and I want to be a better academic. ❤

Dear Hira, This is Amiya Sur from India, I would like to thank you first for making an in-depth video on Interview presentation (a crucial aspect of phd interviews) However, I also got confused as I followed along the video, if my school have asked me to present on a project proposal, how can I already have results to share with them ? How do I show the graphs and all prior to beginning my phd ?

Nice presentation, what about when you are asked to present your expertise and vision for a project that you are applying for can I use my previous work during my presentation?
@oxford_phd2 жыл бұрын
Hi, if they are asking for both expertise and a vision for your project, you can make the first part about your previous work and show them what skills/expertise you have. And in the second part you can present your visions, goals, and hypotheses/research plans for the upcoming project. Hope that makes sense.
@oluwafemioyedele2 жыл бұрын
@@oxford_phd Ok, thank you for your reply, but in my case I am asked to present my expertise and vision for the project I applied for. That means I just present my proposal where I will state how I am going to solve the problem and the expected results?

hey Hira😊 first of all thankyou so much for all this information. I am already expecting an oxford Dphil interview and wanted to prepare ahead of time. I am having trouble understanding this 5 minutes presentation time: would they give me a topic and I have 5 mins to prepare or this 5 min is the presentation time? My other question is: How would I select the project or topic for this 5 min presentation? would I be presenting my previous projects from masters or bachelors or something related to the project I am applying to?
@oxford_phd4 ай бұрын
Hi! You will have to present in 5 minutes and you should prepare the slides etc before the interview. The topic should be your research project from masters or bachelors.
@zigzaglychee7324 Жыл бұрын
I have 3 interviews coming up and I'm nervous. My MSci project went so badly and presenting it in a way that actually paints me in a good light is tough. I have to focus quite a lot on the troubleshooting, reflection and evaluation to at least prove that I can problem solve and assess experiment validity. And the worst part is it was an easy project (literally the most basic molecular biology) so I'm terrified that I'll simply be dismissed as incompetent and not trusted to manage 4 years of wet lab work. All my results are basically pictures of gels that don't have the band I actually wanted due to either plasmid contamination or simply poor PCR efficiency due to the primers being crap (something I should've picked up on sooner). I did well in my viva presentation which was essentially a problem diary, but idk how that will go down in an interview.
@oxford_phd Жыл бұрын
Hi there! I wouldn't worry! The results are outside your control. The imp thing is you tried your best and did the troubleshooting, critical thinking, problem solving. And poor primers hapoens to everyone and it isn't your fault! Just focus on what you did, what you learnt, and don't be afraid to mention what went wrong because it shows you were able to pinpoint what was causing the problems! This skill is crucial for a PhD actually!

Hi! Yes it was on PowerPoint! It's surprising how much you can do on it using the simple shapes. Just pick a nice colour. Add a bit of shadows or 3D structure, and you're good to go. Some parts I think it may have also taken out from figures but probably not. If you do that, probably add "adapted from" and cite the paper.

Very helpful, thank you! Like others in the comments, I am also awaiting to do an interview for a DPhil. Nervous about the presentation because my research was more application-based and it was in a team environment. Any suggestions for how to approach this? (My Master’s was more industry-focused and the project/research was about creating a solution to a problem that occurs in the hospital. And I was one of almost ten team members).
@oxford_phd Жыл бұрын
Hey! You could talk about the project in general but focus more on your contribution and what you did to add value to the project. Especially the research aspect to highlight the skills you developed which will be directly applicable to the PhD. Good luck! :)

Hi Hira. Thank you for the amazing video. I have a question. If I didn't complete my masters yet, but my prospective PhD supervisor told me to prepare a 5min presentation related to my current research work (which is my dissertation). How can I prepare the presentation? Should I only state the background, aim, and expected results?
@sbnluk332 Жыл бұрын
You will definitely need an introduction, ideally with a schematic drawing (for example from Biorender), purpose/aims of your experiments (or tests), and then have 2-3 slides with relevant data, make sure the slides are neatly composed, ideally using a set template from your university or a self-designed template (the example that Hira gave looks good), and make use of the automated formats built into PowerPoint You should have one slide with the key discussion points, and it will be important to mention also the limitations of your study. The last 30 seconds can put your data/conclusions into a wider context, i.e. how it impacts population health, socio-economics, etc., depending on your subject area.

@oxford_phd2 жыл бұрын
@@demrovbeta2289 I'm not sure one can "suggest" a PhD topic. Students don't have to come up with a PhD topic entirely on their own. Think about your field, what you are interested in and what you would like to explore. Then find supervisors/professors who work on these topics and contact them to see if they have any projects advertised. You can then narrow down your choices, see what you are most interested in, and apply to your top choices.
