Now, that is great! I don´t know how this could possibly be improved upon :) I got my low D whistle on it´s way from Sweden as we speak and in a weeks time or so I should finally be ready to follow your videos properly. I am an old saxophone player and the fingering is very similar to the one on the whistle, so I´m hoping it will all come back rather quickly. This is hugely appreciated, seeing the fingering and the notes makes it just perfect to follow. I will put in a request for a song later on, when I´ve actually got a whistle to play and I´ve gotten some practice in :) But once again, thank you very much for all the effort you put into your videos.

Hi... I've been teaching myself penny whistle but love the richer tones of the low D. Can you tell me if it takes significantly more lung capacity for the low d & whether you find the finger spacing difficult or did at first? Thank you! 😊
@chelsi71473 жыл бұрын
It depends on the Low D. I have a Susato. Super easy to hit 2nd octave with little breath. I found it harder to hit the first octave D to he honest. I also have a Dixon. Super light but takes more air to hit the 2nd octave. Very easy first octave. I also have a MK Kelpie. That is heavier and takes more air. I find myself pinching my lips tighter especially in the 2nd octave. Definitely takes the most breath but it sounds the deepest and has a very rich tone. If your looking for less air and light I recommend a Susato Low D. I hope that helps. Happy Whistling!!!!

Hi Stephanie! First of all, thanks for your all that you do here on your channel. It's very obvious that you love the Tin Whistle. I am a newbie, but totally immersed. This particular video, you make reference to being one of your first. Well...anyway, 2 things: I notice in this video for D+, you don't lift the top finger. Am I imagining that? I know I can get the same sound with/without the top finger raising. Is that legal? A shortcut? Also, I am looking for simple exercises to practice. Am I missing them on your channel? Or have you opted to leave that to others? Or am I blind? Thanks again. I enjoy your joy!
@CutiepieTinWhistle6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad you're enjoying the channel. Yes, you can play high D either way, some whistles play better with the top hole open, others not so much. As for exercises, I don't personally do any, as I don't really have time 🤣 but I've heard scales are good, up and down. It depends on what you want to improve on really, if you want to improve on half holes, practice them, ornaments - practice them, speed...well, you get the idea 😉

New tin whistle player here although I've studied music and have played the piano for a great many years and am a composer. Question...why is your D tin whistle so big? I didn't know they made them that big. It's much bigger than my D whistle....does a larger one produce a lower richer sound? My goal is to play all the old Irish Scottish airs/ballads I've played on the piano for decades. I love the slow deeper sounds of a D whistle...very plaintive and bucolic sound! Thanks for your great videos and tips...much appreciated!

Brenda Drew hello. Yes, my green MKpro is a 'low D' whistle - an octave lower than your regular D tinwhistle. They're more expensive and a little tougher to play, bit they make a lovely sound. @@ahmbilal This is a Tin Whistle, but they're also called Penny Whistle, Irish Whistle, or a wide variety of other names. Most whistles you'll find are smaller, and they play higher octaves then this one. You can get decent ones of that size for as low as $10, but when you start to look for the low instruments, the price starts to go up pretty quick. You'll just have to search online for "low tin whistle" and see what comes up. You may find some in the $70 range. The most common one you'll find is a "low d," which will play most songs you'll find sheet music for whistles for.
