Ive ordered a whistle and it should arrive today. I play stringed instruments and piano and am a professional music teacher: but I am very excited to start my irish whistle journey because 1. its far easier to travel and hike with as well as more durable compared to a stringed instrument. and 2. a serious shoulder injury has made playing piano and stringed instruments very painful for me and I think the holding position for the whistle will be much more comfortable! Its great to find so many good resources online nowadays. The internet was barely a thing when I was first learning strings.

Car whistle - best tip ever, and you never know when you may want to crank out a tune somewhere - it’s like carrying a harmonica in the glovebox, or a frisbee :). Had that Oak whistle in many a car now :)

I took a workshop from Judy House on how to get more out of my practice time on my mountain dulcimer. It was a very good class! So when I saw this video I knew it was perfect timing for me to watch it. I heard of the tin whistle in September, got one, and did pretty well with fingering and stuff, I've played clarinet since 7th grade but the squeaks and out of tune notes? That was what I have to overcome. Anyway, I got Covid in early December and hadn't picked my whistle up until yesterday. Of course I ran out of breath quite quickly. This video was perfect timing for me because I'm really focused on productive practicing. THANK YOU!!!

Great tips! When at the end of the video you recommend us not to play while driving the car, I remembered that some time ago I did, and it was a tragicomic situation: I was a new driver and I had a sopranino recorder in the car, at one point I I feel like playing it, I pick it up and start playing it while driving, suddenly I start to skid and go into the other lane, where another car was arriving, I manage to bring mine back into the lane, otherwise it would have been a dramatic head-on collision; the car on the other side was that of the traffic police. Naturally they stop me and ask me for my documents and what the fuck I was doing, I justified myself that I lost control of the car because I had a loud sneeze and I never saw anything again, they wanted to fine me and withdraw my driving license but then they believed it and let me go.😂

Thank you for all the good tips Stephanie. Looking at my approach I see that I am much more chaotic. My fun last five minutes would cover the full hour, I guess. Especially your tip about the ornaments will be very usefull to me. When I play a reel slowly, to learn it, I find it difficult to get the rhythm right, so I usually try to play fast, gradually decreasing the number of errors. Cutting it in pieces and replay the part that goes wrong is a tip I will surely follow.

Will try this I am seriously struggling with a TD low D, my issue is maintaining a low enough air flow in F,E & D notes so they don't "crack" also getting the second octave on D. I have big hands so covering is not my main problem any readers with suggestions on breathing control appreciated.

The extra's, at about 10 minutes, are, I think, the best. Do what works for you. I never warm up my whistle., it's 23-24 C in my house. I think that's warm enough. I play everyday about 10 minutes. Sometimes I like to play along a movie tune while I am watching. I live alone so that is a great advantage for that. My biggest problem are the half notes. I don't like to change whistles all the time so I have to learn this.

This is perfect! I have felt like a fly meandering from one lesson or song to the next and this gives me what I need to know to set real goals. I haven’t really touched on ornaments just yet, thinking about just getting through the songs. To be honest they frighten me- adding another way I can mess up, but without them I feel like I sound like a toddler just picking the whistle up for the first time, thinking I’m Liberachi, but I’m actually agonizingly embarrassing. I can sometimes get distracted as I’ll have a song stuck in my head that I try to convert to tin whistle thinking I’ll make tabs for it someday, but still have to finish learning the songs already in in hand.

I noticed that some tunes which are supposed to be played quickly lose melody when played slowly. I really like Cooley's Reel, but I stop hearing the melody when try out the different notes. trying to play faster makes my fingers trip. Maybe it is a tune for more advanced players to learn.

I just started this week and I’ve been struggling to get consistent notes. Feels like as soon as I get a half way decent sound the next note or the next time I try to play the same note it’s gone off.

How do you get your mouth to stop salivating. I've had to stop just becaus have a waterfall
@CutiepieTinWhistle
@CutiepieTinWhistle Жыл бұрын
Foods with high tannin levels might help 😊 cinnamon, cloves, unsweetened lemon juice in water, tea/coffee, dry red wine - have a quick search online for food/drink with high tannin levels. These foods should help. Scientifically, when tannins and salivary proteins interact, they aggregate and precipitate, which makes the mouth less lubricated 😁 dryness sensation, also known as astringency, refers to a puckering or rough feeling in the mouth upon drinking wine. Scientists know that wine drinkers perceive astringency when tannins and salivary proteins interact, aggregate and precipitate, which makes the mouth less lubricated

"Security warning : don't play your tin whistle while you're driving ! " Well ... actually ... where is this video on youtube ? A young Irish man was saying how he learned to play the whistle when he was little ... it was on the car with his father on their way to the school ... the father was playing the whistle to make his son listen to it and learn, while he was driving !!! 😄 It was in the 80' or so, and this young man was joking about it now but also said "we wouldn't do such a thing these days ! " . I really hope not ! 🤣
