If you are using the 787-16 retainers, offset keepers and a set of full roller rocker. How would you get around the guides on the tip of the rocker hitting the retainers?
@cuttersperformance3 жыл бұрын
You'll probably have issues with full roller rockers. You lose too much of the valve tip getting the correct installed height. You would have better luck with roller tip rockers like 1417-16. I tell guys if they want to use full roller rockers your better off getting the heads cut for guide plates and using non self aligning full rollers

Man these are the things others don't tell you, like the offset keepers and retainers won't work with full rollers, i was looking and considering a 1.5 full rollers for last couple days while my heads are in the shop for clean up and screw in studs, i guess i'll get those 1.52 ones, little more power maybe over a 1.5 full roller, would rather have 1.6 but i think the blue ls2 springs/alexs retainers and offset keepers would be a little too close for comfort with that additional lift

I have a solid stock 80’s 350 with old smog 76cc crap heads,60 psi no smoke great platform to build my mud bogging mini monster Jeep power on. Based on the info I’m learning from you, I’ve ordered the pieces you stated ( ls6 blue springs, comp retainers, .050 offset keepers, etc…. Ow looking at cam and rockers….. in another video you used the Melling 22301 cam, and it seems perfect for me! My question is two fold…. If I used the1.52 or 1.6 self aligning it roller rockers instead of the 1.5 stock, how will that affect the cam/ engine in my case, and do I need to worry about valve- piston issues? What would the total lift be? What “changes” basically with the cam specs? Would this be better for my application, or am I better off staying stock? What difference (at the cam) is there between 1.5 and 1.52? So sorry for the long post, but honestly, after seeing and learning from you and your videos, I have only trust in your knowledge!!!!!!!! My email if it’s easier for you, sir. Fbpd227@yahoo.com Thank you in advance!!!

Sorry, sent this before the math part of the 1.6 rockers, AND wasn’t aware that all vortec were 1.52 ratio, vs 1.5 standard sbc rockers, but when I read the Melling cam specs, assume it’s based on the old 1.5 Chevy ratio, so I guess most of my question is still intact. I am NOT a cam guru, and can spin wrenches, but the magic combo info you have is like high level magic!!!
@cuttersperformance2 жыл бұрын
Hey man! The stock rocker vary abit, they are somewhere invertwen 1.49 and 1.52 depending lol Youll also find that alot of aftermarket rockers are more. For example I used a set of 1.6 PRW rockers and they actually worked out to be 1.67 Its cam lift × rocker ratios = total lift Or Total lift ÷ rocker ratio = cam lift But to know exactly what the lift is, a dial indicator is used on the retainer once the heads are installed
What valve seals do you recommend for doing the Vortec beehive/retainer swap? Did you put factory style seals back on or is there a slightly better aftermarket option? I have the Springs I have the retainer but I'm hesitant on putting stock valve Shields back on it. It's not if they will feel good or not it's long job it's a it's longevity and is there a better seal out there that is a direct replacement, no machining?

Felpro ss72861 are stock replacement. They work great never had a leak. Good Viton seals and don’t interfere with lift at all like a positive seal would and Umbrellas are junk.

Great videos, I'm learning a lot from you but still have a couple of questions. I am usingg the Fel Pro valve seals 72861 and bottomed them out when I installed them. My current cam has .454/.454 lift and I'm using the stock 1.52 rocker arms. I watched your video and did the math regarding if I swap to 1.6 ratio rocker arms, this would put my cam lift at .47789/.47789. Do you recommend enlarging the holes that the pushrods go through for this set up? Obviously it is the safest route, but my engine is all back together and running well. I wasn't clear if this is only necessary when using 1.6 arms AND swapping to a cam with over .480 lift.

If the heads were off, I would recommend drilling them as the 1.6 rocker arm will shift the push rod over. But with a lower lifter cam, I'd be surprised if you ran into clearance issues

ok so i have a tricky question here. i have 9.5:1 comp ratio vortec motor with a lunati torque cam. .416/.447 lift to stay with safe specs. valves were slightly over adjusted to give some more head room and detune the engine. its all hydraulic roller and within adjustment range just a little less lift on stock heads. was also afraid it wouldnt like pump gas at full lift. 9.8ish comp ratio if i did the comp cams springs and retainers and added 1.6 rocker arms it should be more than within safe zones right? even with proper valve adjustment? valve seals have already been replaced with stock felpro properly instead of half on like factory. i would imagine lift would be .480 or less maybe .472/.473 most likely .468 safe lift should be over .500 .525 if everything checked out. i keep telling myself to just pull the heads and get the shaved down guides and all that but its a daily driver in the nice months. extremely good mileage and in a very light vehicle fresh rebuild why pull it apart if i dont need to. i feel like letting it breathe at proper limits with my safe zone in place is best . but if im pulling it apart and replacing springs and retainers the 1.6 rocker arm seems like the only sensible choice. atleast on the intake side even granted vortec heads dont have a problem inhaling but i dont think it would suffer from breathing a little better. motor runs too cool and is happy on good 89 or better but doesnt like 87 it will pull spark timing if running under good 89. full fuel injection i just dont want the valve seals being too close to a heat source or under possible valve float and hit a seal.

I’ve got a 400 sbc that I will be putting a new cam in. The cam is undecided. I’m wanting to use vortec heads and get the lift up by doing the beehive ls springs with the retainers and off set keepers. Planning to do screw in studs. Are there any self aligning rocker arms that are best for this set up? I don’t entirely understand why u would drill the push rod holes. But would I need to do that for retainer to rocker clearance?
@cuttersperformance3 жыл бұрын
Comp cams 1417-16 work well. You drill the push rod holes to give more clearance from the push rod hitting the head. This is especially needed when running 1.6 rocker arms.

If you swapped from 193 swirl ports to vortecs, you could reuse the push rods and rockers arms. Pushrod length should be checked when any component is changed though

Hey Pat I made quite the discovery messing around with my stock 062 vortec heads tonight. Measuring stock vortecs from retainer to seal clearance I got 0.461 which is to be expected. What I noticed was my valve seals were not seated all the way down to the heads, which I assume is wrong? So I pressed them back down all the way flush with the block, remeasured and I got 0.531 valve to seal clearance. That being said given I have proper springs, in theory I could run up to a 0.490 lift cam? Is that correct? Was considering a beehive kit, maybe it is unnessary now? Is hamming my seals all the way down incorrect? Just wondering your thoughts. I have pictures of my measurements and all aswell, I can send you an email if you want to see for yourself.
@cuttersperformance3 жыл бұрын
No that is correct, often times the seals are not seated all the way down onto the guide. Stock vortecs are usually good for .460 to .480 lift (depending) and obviously a spring upgrade is almost always needed to run any decent roller cam

@@glennsawyer2065 if the springs are changed but not the valve length then technically the push length shouldn't change. Some things that affect push rods length: deck height, head gasket thickness, camshaft base circle, head milling, valve length, lifter height. It should always be checked when changing any valve train components though

@@larryayres7412 it depends on what springs your using, stock springs those push rods should work for you no problem.
