Can you take a disc that was originally cut with grooves for a movie and re-cut grooves on to it with sound? In this experiment we will try just that.

Not sure if anyone commented but that "stuff" that comes off the record may be referred to as "swarf". At least that's what it's called in machine shop fabricating lingo. Really cool experiment! But please.....stay away from my CED collection! :D

Have you tried recording onto a disc with a blank side to see if that would reduce the surface noise?

Try it next with a computer hard drive. Remove the aluminum platter from the hard drive and cut a record into that.

The good thing is all the optical disc have a "laquar" coating on it! That's similar to what the pros use! They use a metal disc coated with laquar!

IAmNotAFunguy Aww you ruined my fun! :( The only reason I'm curious is because when he cut into a laserdisc, it still played through the cut part.

Makes me wonder what a modern record cutter/player would sound like at 78 speeds, especially if you used CX and quadraphonic encoders. You should get some kind of setup going to compensate for off-center and warped discs. And maybe also stick to the blank sides of discs whenever possible :p

You know how to get rid of swarfs? Hook upon small vacuum hose behind the cutting needle and connect the hose to a small vaccuum, and viola! No more swarfs!

😱😢To me Laser Discs and CEDs are all very important irreplaceable pieces of video History, interesting experiment, surely there are other things you can use that are plentiful or still being made that does not matter, if get damaged but good experiment, wonder if CD 💿 could be used or if it is to small and shiny???

Databits you should start charging for this. $15-$20 per record. People send you two audio files (one per side) and You could cut them on polycarbonate plastic and send them off. Way to make extra $$$$
