Awesome thank you for making this video! My Purpurata is in sheath more about a month now and I think I have another coming too. I didn't know anything about cattleya growing sheath, been trying to find answers. But your video is very helpful. I guess if I get buds it might be months down the road. Good to know. Thanks!
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
Well, the first step to successful cattleya flowering is the sheath so you're already half way there, Craig. Purpurata is an amazing plant, much wilder and more beautiful than many of the hybrid cattleyas. I am glad the video was helpful and I wish you a happy flowering!

Beautiful, enormous cattleya! Thanks for making this video. I got curious when I saw in another video that you cut the sheaths, and I meant to ask what is the right moment to do it, and this answered my question. My cattleya tenebrosa is in sheath and the buds are very small inside. Last year I didn't cut it and it didn't have a problem. If necessary I will cut it. I have orchids hanging above it, so it was good to hear your warning about the possibility of dripping sap and its dangers.
@GardeningatDouentza9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Soilander Andrea, I also have Cattleya tenebrosa, just about to open. It also has a very, very long sheathing period. It is my first flowering. I would say that if you had no problem with the sheath last year then best left alone!
@andreasoilander54079 жыл бұрын
Gardening at Douentza Yes, it is a very looooooooooooooong sheathing period. Even when the buds started to form inside, every week when I look they were always some 2 cm long, and no change. Other people's tenebrosas were already starting to bloom, and mine was so slow. (Last year it bloomed in the first week of June). But now the shadow inside the sheath is already 5 cm long. Once it grows some more, it will start getting faster. My streptocarpuses have grow way faster than that, and one has a tiny bud forming! :)
@tufterween9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Soilander Hey, great news about the strep. Hopefully that will flower all summer for you.

I have a idea when cattleya formed a sheath weekly twice torch 🔦 the sheath weather it cast the shadow that confirms the buds then we should be calm until the bud develop and when it come near to the top cut the sheath on top and let the bud grow ☝💪 stronger

Maybe I need to fertilize it more than I do. When I bought it from a south america seller it had already the sheets and it was bare roots so, maybe, it took this gap year to acclimate...

Hi awesome video! Exciting news, I discovered a bud growing in my purpurata! This is my first time getting a bud in a sheath. The bud is about 1 inch to 2 inches from the lower end of the sheath. Should I wait to cut the sheath when it get closer to the top? Or right away? I'm not sure how fast the bud will take to develop. Thanks for your help. 😎
@GardeningatDouentza7 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig and congratulations! Personally I would wait a little before cutting the sheath but you want to have enough space to cut it so that there is no danger of cutting the buds. Beware though if you have aphids! My friend lost a but because the aphids got into her cut sheath. Not funny!

I've had trouble with two cattleya's buds getting stuck (at least I thought they were stuck) in the sheath and after I opened the sheath the buds died on both plants. :(
@GardeningatDouentza9 жыл бұрын
***** That is a shame. Don't really know what to say about that! Maybe they were already damaged from trying to get out before you opened it?
@quesofreshcoh8 жыл бұрын
Gorgeous plant, the flowers are marvelous, and I do want to ask you if you have tried putting a plastic baggie or something of that sort to protect the sheath after you cut it, I will try this with my cattleya if it produces a sheath this time (last time it did not but the previous time it did) so I think it could be a fun little experiment, any thoughts?
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
+Gabriel Zambrano I never tried that but it sounds like a good idea :) Thank you for watching.
@quesofreshcoh8 жыл бұрын
+Gardening at Douentza Thank you for making this video, it was very informative and I will definitely try it. I am going to put some form of plastic so it doesn't rot and hopefully I can see results and hopefully the buds form. I am going with maria to the orchid show next week and I am definitely picking up a cattleya and a dendrobium spectabile so I will let you know what happens, maria will most likely post a video on her channel and I am soo excited for the show! I really want the purpurata and especially CG Roebling. Once the CG Roebling blooms please make a video!!!!
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
+Gabriel Zambrano Well good luck with your experiment. Just make sure the buds aren't inhibited by the plastic. Which Maria are you talking about ? Picture Maria? C.G. Roebling is now in flower but it is not as impressive as last year (because I divided it last spring). It is in the background in my 'Orchid Lovers & Madeira' video and features again in an orchid unboxing video that is coming up :)
@quesofreshcoh8 жыл бұрын
+Gardening at Douentza yes I am going with Picturemaria1, Oooh an unboxing! Can't wait! So excited for the Orlando Orchid show! @GardeningatDouentza9 жыл бұрын
orchids plz Yes, this plant has been laelia, sophronitis and cattleya. Many name changes! It needs to get big before flowering. However, if you check out Radha's channel, kzbin.info/door/igil0Pwzt5-8GdoMOO8Odw, she has this plant in flower at a smaller size than mine. Mind you, she is in Florida!

Not really. Circumcision is the removal of the male foreskin and this is the opening of a plant sheath.
