Cutting down a dead standing red gum eucalyptus tree in Arizona. Native to Australia these eucalyptus were brought to Arizona in the mid to late 1800s where they thrive in the desert heat.
I used a modified Makita/Dolmar 7900 79cc saw with a 24" bar and chain to cut it down and a Chinese clone MS660 with a 42" bar and a PantherPros mill to slab it.
Red Gum is extremely dense and hard when dry. Many people might say that my chains are dull but I can assure you that they are sharp.

See in country Victoria (Australia) that would be half a load of firewood in a Trailer as part of the weekly pub lotto…

I just subbed , born and raised on the east coast but after I moved to California I got a tandem load of pole logs that was 90% eucalyptus and started telling my friends back east "y'all ain't never cut into anything this hard"

@@dch923ster in the 20 year dried stuff I have, a bit of a blunt grind (larger file or held higher) and lower rakers seems to work well - bucking - I haven’t tried to mill yet. I have noodled and around 20° bar down cuts real fast…so maybe a long bar (I have a 60”) at that perfect noodling angle would be good for milling.

I’m bucking up some now. Same problem, blowing through dry oak and crawling through eucalyptus.

I need to get a 3 inch diameter limb. It has to be fresh cut, I want to make a tap handle out of it. Turn it while it is green. Finish it, but don't varnish it. When it finally dries, and stops moving, it will feel like an ear of corn. Yes, red gum has made it to Arizona, and does real well here. steve

That must be some hard wood even when you are felling it the saw doesn't wnat to throw chips. I know that Euc. is hard but i thought red gum was softer.

You should get your hands on what we call Red Ironbark, the densest hardwood we have. Red like blood, about 1.3 metric tons to the cubic metre

They're a very slow growing tree and many can live for 300+ years. When they grow older they can hollow old in the base making a small 'room' -Australian aborigines used these as 'birthing trees' -women gave birth in them.
