Still working on clearing out the fallen trees from this pasture. Now with the Large American Felling Axe from Gränsfors Bruk. This "New World" axe has quite a large handle and was not easy to handle. Not for the cuts I was trying to make. But it was still great fun!
I'm also working with the Large Scandinavian Forest Axe.

Cool vid. Some good observations in there about tool choice, work flow and managing your site. The AFA with the 90 handle would be a bit of a beast to swing in some of those awkward positions! 👍

Thank you! :) I think the max length I enjoy is like 70cm. Atleast on a chopping axe.

You seem to like high end hand tools. A big Silky saw would've taken those limbs down in a fraction of the time and allowed you to buck them up at ground level.

Looks like a beautiful property! Dead wood is always really hard to chop, and felled trees seem to bounce a lot, which makes work even harder. Doing some hard work chopping at chest height with that heavy axe! Good exercise!

Thank you! It was tough and that makes it more fun! :) Dead wood is really strange after you are used to cutting green wood!

Which axe do you prefer long term? The bigger or smaller felling axe? I'm looking for one myself

I prefer the Gränsfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe. Perfect since I live in Sweden, and it is made for the woods I work in. I also get sub 100USD price for the same reason. But I think for woods common in other locations you should aim for axes made for those woods. Aiming for a shorter handle and lighter head than you might think!

Not being rude but watch someone swing an axe correctly. There are plenty on You tube who are very good but it is difficult to teach without watching the correct and less tiring technique.

Hello and thank you for your concern. This was one of the first projects I had to do at my farm and I have improved quite a bit. My biggest misstake on this project was that I used the wrong kind of axe. That is why I look quite awkward here!

@@moonlightfarmer . Hi yes thats o.k. Like a say there are quite a few out on KZbin now uploading axe videos and they have good technique. Main thing is you were getting the job done.😎

@@moonlightfarmer You don't look awkward but the handle is too long when you're operating in the middle of all those branches. You're using a felling axe when in fact you're limbing, not felling. From your handling of branches once you've cut them, I believe you're right handed which means that you'd get more control and efficiency switching hands on the axe shaft. The left hand at the bottom. You may find a marked difference in the quality and results of your strikes.
