❗️ All interviews were filmed in spring of 2023 (pre - Final Cut Pro Creative Summit 2023) ❗️
Everybody is switching to DaVinci Resolve, and a strange feeling is going through the Final Cut Pro Community. The lack of feature updates is the apparent cause - or is it? In this documentary, we will see that the underlying issue is something else entirely.

Switched over to DaVinci 8 months ago after being on FCPX for 9 years. Took me about 2 solid months to regain my efficiency that I had in FCPX. 8 months in now and I am a better editor in DaVinci than I ever could have been in FCPX.

Agree, many editors/colorist/audio that do it for a living have moved to DaVinci Resolve/Fusion/Fairlight ... it really is that good ... I'm a panel guy so I have all the Blackmagic Designs gear and they integrate flawlessly with nothing I need to do other than plug the units in.

Thank you for making this video with your heart. I am a video editor in Taiwan, and FCP was the first editing software I ever touched. I fell in love with it right away. I have also used Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve for work. I often tell my friends with amusement, "I always can't tell if I like FCP or the video itself." Because using FCP is like breathing naturally. Whenever I am rushing to finish a job, I always use FCP, which makes me able to complete the job smoothly and focus on the image content itself, rather than too many operational details. Even more importantly, whenever I edit with other software, my right hand becomes more sore and tired. In the video production industry in Taiwan, it is indeed relatively rare for people to use FCP. Whenever I mention the editing software I use to my colleagues, I always get a little surprise and curiosity, because most people use Premiere Pro or Edius. I learned about this video from FCP Cafe, and I am very happy that there are so many people who love it too. This makes me feel not alone. I never thought that even watching a documentary about a software could be so moving.

This is so relatable. I'm a professional video editor and I LOVE video editing, BUT I only enjoy it IF I'm editing in FCP. I had to cut in Premiere recently and I hated the experience. People say tools shouldn't matter but I think it's absolutely wrong to think that. If I'm using a tool day in and day out to do. my job, the tool BETTER clicks with me.

I had very similar feelings right before the Creative Summit last November. From 2011 to 2018 there was a lot of progress with the app, then Apple slammed on the breaks. When FCP for iPad came out last year we finally knew what they had been working on. Unlike Resolve for the iPad (which was literally just the same as the desktop version) FCP for the iPad was redesigned and rewritten which pulled resources away from the development of the desktop app. But I'm not the target user for the iPad app, so I felt neglected. Then I saw 10.7 and now feel confident that Apple is going to ramp up a bit on the desktop app again. There are many long standing requests that they're aware of and are working on. 2024 could turn out to be a very exciting year for Final Cut users! Don't let us down Apple, we love Final Cut Pro, it matters to us!

I never thought I would have such an emotional attachment to a piece of software as I do with Final Cut. I started with the original iMovie on an eMac back in the day. I then graduated to Final Cut Express and then 7. When Final Cut X came out I was floored and like many of you I felt it was a program specifically designed for me. Thank you for the great doc and for holding the line for the future of FCP.

I started using NLEs in the late 1980s and editing years before that. When Apple came out with the magnetic timeline, connected clips, connected storylines, and keyword collections I thought someone finally got it right. Every other NLE is still adding great features to their Moviolas. Yet Apple has left so much potential on the table and walked away from the revolution they started. I never want to slog through a track-based NLE again after nearly 20 years of editing that way. There's so much wrong with that paradigm that I find it as indefensible as someone arguing in favor of hand-cranked cars. Yet Apple themselves really don't see the value in what they've done (or at least the value it has for Apple the company).

THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! I LOVE FCPX and every time I have to use another NLE I miss FCPX, but 1) Smoothing keyframes is worst in FCPX. 2) Audio mixing should be so much better than it is. Remember when FCP (before FCPX) had audio fader memory for mixing? Why can't we have faders that can midi link to tactile external faders?
@SamFigueroa
@SamFigueroa 6 ай бұрын
Mega gut. Thanks for creating this. I've gone from DaVinci to Premiere Pro and landed on Final Cut Pro now. There are definitely things I'm missing from both of the NLEs I was in first, but I'm just so much faster at getting through an edit on FCP and it just is waaaay more stable. A thing to note on DaVinci and Pr is that they crashed a whole lot for me, whether it was on PC or Mac. I don't want to go back to that.

I'm always saying that I can surely wait a little longer for some as long as stability and reliability are the top priority features for the FCP team. If they have to do something, they should take their time to do it right.

Nice piece! And I like the title, it resonates with me as the compromise I'm willing to make (although the rubberband is pretty stretched) . The most excrutiating thing about it is, to me, that FCP has the best foundation to build a story from the ground up. The core of video editing...is the editing. So media management and the work in the timeline. Two things that are super strong in FC IMO. Everytime I think about switching is mainly when I finalize and go into polishing (CC, effects, keyframing). But then, everytime I start something from scratch, I'm relieved to be in FCP. They broke ground, they had the audacity to start such a complex software from scratch. And then they stopped the work. I find that hard to stomach after all those years, being so close to a unique and fully fledged tool.

I get what you want to say, but let me be honest to you. You can do 99% of it in DVR and it often times make more sense: So last week I made the complete switch to DVR after a decade of FCP. It wasn't an easy decision, but I used DVR here and there for the last 3 years, and now I made the complete jump. TBH I really love the magnetic timeline but speaking of that I found pretty much everything translated into DVR even working similarly like the magnetic timeline at least 95% of its functionality, I did very deep research to make sure everything functions as I need it. Here a few points which are better in DVR than in FCPX: - Key wording (You can KW Markers, clips in the timeline in the media pool everywhere it is so well organized) - Assets in Powerbins - Interaction between media pool and timeline and in reverse, meaning I can put anything back to a media pool or bin from a timeline that is f awesome - dedicated mixing board for sound-mastering and mixing & automation - Easy export a video split in the individual clips - Stabilization is way way way more flexible and with the work of fusion you can do everything - the Proxy Generator Workflow is awesome which auto generates proxies if you aren't in DVR and from a watch folder - Syncing clips in an active timeline is f awesome - MY MOST LIKED More stacked Timelines in one View you can have an A Roll Timeline open and a B Roll Timeline to move clips from top to down in the timeline ITS HUGE WORKFLOWWISE - Color Grading / Magic Mask is sooooo advanced in comparison to Colorfinale pro and final cut and it is ALL ON BOARD, means i don't have to be afraid to update DVR the plugins always work not like in FCPX where i can wait half a year to have the 3rd pary plugins to update and sometimes charge extra to get it back to work (f sucks) - Fusion / Tracking / Compositing is awesome - Audio transcription and Text based editing in so many different languages is a big gamechanger since i do a lot of corporate talking head type of videos, and it saves me weeks a year now to get a sense or overview of what the people talk - Coloring Clips without making a role for it - Export Settings - DVR just make sense and it has it all ON BOARD (Sorry for my english) I know that is a long list, but it speeded up my workflow at least 4x. I really wished apple wouldn't have killed FCPX with pure ignorance, but at this point i would even say for most people DVR or Capcut is the much better choice. FCPX is dead. RIP.

@@meyerdigitalfilm I definitely believe it can be everything you say and I don’t doubt it’s serving you well. But to me, and the work I do, it’s all overkill a little bit. When I tried to make the switch DVC was on ver 15. So maybe it changed. But it felt like a technician tool. Loaded with all the possibilities and all the buttons to do everything. But when I curate and edit stuff, I want all this out of the way. I also need stability, without the software changing drastically every 6 month under my feet. And DVC didn’t get out of my way enough for my taste. Your answer in fact solidifies my wish for FCP to NOT become DVC. I think that it’s quite healthy to have the two running parallel. My wish for FCP is mainly for it to keep its cutting edge mission, carefully offering more, following its strengths. Maybe a more agressive integration of AI (the simple audio slider added recently already saved me a lot of headaches), and making improvements on some great fonctionnalities that lack luster.

I work a lot with FCP pro, Premiere and a little DaVinci. But FCP pro remains a game changer. Mainly because of its speed and efficient editing solution. However, I think important functions need to be upgraded. Such as editing by text, transcription and more efficient colour grading. In today's new world of social media, video productions need to be high quality but also fast. This can only be achieved with Final Cut pro. I hope Apple recognises this and stays at the cutting edge of technology and development. Then nobody will be so quick to switch to another app.

This was a great video. As a creator who needs to focus on my content more than editing, I love using Final Cut. It is fast and gets the job done. But I can see why many are getting nervous. There are all sorts of huge developments out there that will introduce tools that will make life a lot easier for creators. For instance text based editing and own voice generation would be wonderful for when you need to add in material post filming. Apple needs to be on top of this.

That was a brutal decision on their part. That was the day I lost trust in Apple. We had all our eggs in the Aperture basket and out of the blue had the wool pulled from under us. Although FCP is awesome and I do use and prefer it. I will never forget what Apple did with Aperture and I now use all their software with the underlying knowledge that Apple can axe it at any time for the dumbest of reasons. In other words make sure you have a back up plan and learn more than one.

"Final Cut Pro does so many amazing things that are so easy to take for granted." Matthew said this and I *so* agree. Putting FCP, DVR and Premiere together, yes Premiere and DVR have been getting way more significant features than FCP, BUT, FCP's magnetic timeline and hover skimming alone trump all the fancy features in the other two NLEs for me. Cutting video and working with plugins in FCP are just *way faster and way more fun* in FCP for some reason. If I had to use one word to describe my experience cutting videos in FCP would be: *fluid*. I'm a full-time video creator/editor in higher ed. I thought I loved video editing, but after trying to edit videos in DVR and Premiere recently, I realized what I actually love is *video editing IN FCP*. And it's not a matter of familiarity because Premiere was my first NLE when I first dabbled in video editing; it was only after I started editing videos in FCP that I fell in love with this profession, so much so that I switched careers to do it full-time. Anyway, do I wish FCP will get more updates and more features that users have been asking for? Yes! At the same time, if Apple did accelerate the development of FCP again, I hope they keep the simplicity and fluidity of FCP.

Great video! Great editing! I am a professional editor and I have been using FCP & FCPX for over 20 years! I also have a channel (in French) dedicated to FCP. FCP is probably the best and faster NLE for editing thanks in particular to its magnetic timeline and the organisation workflow, but today Apple must make a big move and offer us a major update of FCP! Too many features are missing (as mentioned by the speakers of your video), including simple things like the ability to create favorites for Effects and Titles, being able to rename Color Effects , implement an Audio Mixer, and others features that would allow FCP to get back into the race and be taken more seriously by production companies on high-end projects. It's frustrating to see a software with so much potential stagnate for years! I hope your video gets back to Apple!

I’m no pro video editor, I only tinker with my hobby skate videos and some music related promo stuff and such, but I generally love FCP, but as a music producer I can’t understand why there’s not Logic-like audio mixing possibility, but this clumsy way of handling things. I also am somewhat disappointed by the now slowness of upgrades, especially with the AI-aided stuff like auto-captions and magic mask.

@darude
@darude 6 ай бұрын
Yup, it's clumsy at best. I DO get that in some situations (and when you are forced to and used to the clip based effects & mixing) it can make sense, but it's both insanely hard to keep track of audio things in a big edit and very non-economic having per-clip effects. I've been craving for something "simple" like them making it possible to assign certain objects/samples/audio to a group/channel where you could treat & mix them like you would in a DAW and the rest going to a "the rest" bus before master, so you could do both, treat single stuff in the edit and pipe more precious audio to channels/busses/groups.@@iamericlenz

I know this is more of a video for professional video editors, but the same sentiment is shared when it comes to music production in Logic Pro. I switched to Studio One because of its robust features and consistent updates. Apple has gotten so caught up in trying to have the latest and greatest hardware products every year that they (intentionally or unintentionally) disregard the software products that are supposed to keep us reeled in. Their hardware is in a great place of reliability and holding its value; we need consistent software updates and a massive reworking of the hardware pricing, especially for RAM and storage. Dongle life is not life, lol! Great video! It was nice to hear from your colleagues on the matter

I’ve been hoping since version 10.2 that Apple create tabs for editing , color, audio etc …. Then I saw BMD do it. I’ve been editing since I was 18 , Avid, media100, linear I’ve used it all. This is the most comfortable I’ve ever felt with an editing App. It’s the most fluid it’s fastest and most intuitive editing software ever used. I would never use FCP for a complex edit. Track editing will always be my preferred option because I have ultimate control and don't need to fight a magnetic force! That said, for simpler linear edits, FCP and its infamous magnetic timeline has been fluid - but I have so much to learn about it and how it can be manipulated in a way that isn't completely destructive. I feel this is keeping the software alive, it's a unique selling point. But also a pain in the backside, at least for me. However, there's a good reason why Premiere Pro and now Resolve are leading in the industry.

Final Cut was my go to when it was initially released. Then they targeted their interface to children and at the same time still found a way to make it anti-intuitive. Resolve is essentially the best of all worlds, a post-production workhorse designed by post-production professionals who engineered it based on their needs and preferences. What a concept.

I had that problem for sure, put on a simple color space transform, which is good to set anyway, and set the output gamma to Rec 709 A (you can set it in project settings under color management too). The file exactly matches the Resolve window, and just as important, the youtube viewer as well, which is also prone to gamma shifts without this setting, at least for sdr finishing. I was actually too critical of FCP, people should use whatever they prefer, one isn't necessarily better than the other as they all produce great results.@@my2cents198

I have been editing full time on FCPX for 8 years and I'm not sure I share the same opinions. FCPX has always been inflexible and you need to adapt to it, not the other way around - I don't think this will change any time soon. I didn't feel great about the trajectory of the software pre-summit but I think it's moving in a more positive direction now. In terms of rendering speed, stability, and ease-of-use (once you get used to it) it's still way ahead of any other NLE. For users working on very large projects or in film it's probably lacking a few too many features to be a good first choice, but for everyone else it's usually very viable at the minimum.

To be honest, I can’t even remember what made me switch to DaVinci. I do remember there were things that DaVinci does kind of natively that FCP requires either plugins or workarounds to do. I do sometimes use FCP, especially when needing text titles with fancy animations as FCP is a BEAST in that regard whereas DaVinci slows to a crawl even in M1 Max hardware. The features that keep me using DaVinci even if it is only the free version are: - “automatic” audio ducking for perfect music mixing with talking audio. - Power bins that make it super easy to reuse footage, titles and effects - Fantastic plugins by MrAle Tech and Patrick Stirling just to name a couple.

I spent 33 years in corporate America directly supporting leadership at the Office Of The Chairman on down. Per Matthews comment, you can be secretive about your product development while at the same time providing a 'roadmap for the future' on what to expect over the next 3 to 5 year time horizon based on current strategic plans. To be honest, I think FCP is nothing more than a minor tick on the revenue stream so it will never get the kind of support that the community wants until the community either grows and/or become more vocal.
