In Resolve, you can switch to a different angle without making a new cut by option or alt clicking on the angle thumbnail in the viewer. When chopping down a multicam clip, I just do it within the single viewer, then go back through and choose angles. I guess this is more time consuming, but I often edit the talking head portion without even looking at the video as I find it distracting
@jakefelzien
@jakefelzien 11 ай бұрын
did not know about the option click. will try that. still cumbersome becasue you don't even need the thumbnail viewer to switch angles in final cut once you have it set up and are editing

FCPX has never let me down and if it could do something, which is a very rare occurrence there's always a quick and easy off not several plug-in as one to help. Everything from importing RED footage to seamless playback of it, and hardly any drops or drops ups like with davinci, and davinci doesn't have smooth flawless playback.

I imagine it depends on where you started. Resolve was my first digital editing software, and I can see why some of the drag-and-drops are much easier in other programmes. Much of it is about how you set up the project settings in Resolve. We could argue that why would we need to do that? and that would be a reasonable comment if not a completely fair one. Horses for courses and all that. I would also suggest that not knowing how to do certain tasks is not the same as it not being able to do them. Interestingly I started on Mac back in the late 80s with cubbase, then went to Windows because that's what was in more workplaces and stayed with it for decades. Then with the advent of the M-series, I went back to Apple and there are things that drive me mad in the OS. Why is the close on the left not the right? Why can't I deleted with one click, why couldn't I split the screen with multiple tabs, why why why why!!!! My point is that we often feel the one we are comfortable with is the better option, and that is completely fair. The phrase he used was "out of the box" and that too is fair. If you just want simple stuff, use the cutpage in the free version of Resolve. If you want more, pay the one time price for the Studio version. If your business will pay for the subs, then use the one you are comfortable with. But its like a new pair of shoes, you have to wear them in, but it might be nicer to just wear flip flops, but they don't suit all situations. The idea that any programme will give 100% of users 100% functionality is sadly a giant case of wishful thinking and I use Mac, Android, Windows and even Linix at times, and none of them ever have me thinking, perfect, everything that I want is there for me to start with.

L and J cuts are super easy in Resolve, just hold alt while you adjust the video or the video of the clips. For green screens on the edit page, the 3D keyer is super fast and works with not evenly lit green screens as well. btw capcut is just a rip off of FCP so I'm not surprised it has similar layout and tools lol.

I completely agree with you that FCP's magnetic timeline leaves everything else behind, and the comparison you've made is absolutely accurate. Ok, #2 Big time. Just being able to throw things around in FCP is so incredibly liberating, it gives you so much more creative freedom. I edit in FCP and DR and for many years in Premiere. They are all good at somethings, but suck at other things. FCP is just really really easy to use, and if you use it with Motion I believe it is a more powerfull combo tham Premiere and After Effects. And before I get some hate on this I want to say I'm no newbie to After Effects. I have a post grad degree in graphic design and I've worked as a motiongxf designer for 20 years for ad agencies and broadcasters. AE is way more fuctional than Apple Motion. What Apple have done is decide what most editors would do inside after effect and make Motion to do those common tasks but not get bogged down with the things you might do rarely. So for an editor, Apple motion is pretty much the perfect fit. The way FCP and Motion integrate is so well thought out, it's a real shame when I see FCP editors that don't use Motion, I feel like they are only getting half the advantages of using fcp over other NLEs. Great video though, some really good points well illustrated. Do you have a podcast?

2:45 in Davinci click alt+numbers to switch camera angle 3:00 why would you want to switch the audio when you switch angles? The whole purpose of multicam is that you have one master audio track. The only time where it makes sense is on interviews, even then you can just switch between video only or video+audio
@jakefelzien
@jakefelzien 2 ай бұрын
Your first answer is perfect, learned that 👍 And I agree. I do a lot of interviews so that is why I mentioned it :) But also the way it cuts just the video clip and not the audio when doing the video only mode is really frustrating depending on what you are doing. Idk. Once you’ve used FCP multi-cam there is just nothing good going on with Resolve multi-cam in comparison 😅

or, and just a though here because I came from a different place, set your project up with more tracks, colour code them if it helps and just put it on top or lock the tracks you are putting clips on top of and then it won't happen. I said this earlier, the, as he puts it "out of the box" feels more straightforward in FCP and PP to someone like me who hasn't used them very much, but because I started in Resolve I am just used to setting things up in templates how I like them and that removes a lot of these challenges, plus I set up my own shortcut keys for my own weird working brain, which also helps.
@jakefelzien

@ but do you still overwrite stuff? Or does it “occasionally happen” ? (Asking out of curiosity) Because I NEVER do it in FCP because it is impossible to do it by accident 😊
@ggproductions7078
@ggproductions7078 Ай бұрын
@@jakefelzien you know what, I just had a little play in it with a new project not in a template, and yep, it's a pain. Because you need a separate track for graphics you could dump that over the top and lose stuff if you aren't expecting it. I had three separate clips, all taking up a third of the portrait space, with individual graphics over all three. Now, if I didn't know what was coming and hadn't created enough tracks or hadn't locked them, my head would have exploded. But as I think I said, because when I came back to editing I tried the free version of Resolve all seemed logically straightforward. However, if I had come from a more drag-and-drop programme ( out at the same time) I would, well I already would have pulled my hair out, so my cat would be hiding for dear life.

Resolve has a lot to learn from FCP when it comes to Multicam editing. If you start working with files that have multiple audio tracks (polywaves from professional recorders like MixPre), the situation gets super messy- it doesn’t know what to do. Also it sometimes fails to sync *identical* audio that FCP can sync in seconds (because it’s identical- duh!). I would switch to DaVinci in an instant because of Color grading and audio mixing (FCP sucks in that department) but syncing audio and MC editing is such a basic thing that I don’t want to think about. Great video man!

@@jakefelzien Wow, that was fast 😜 I discovered you with the video "How to make Davinci (almost) like Final Cut" or something. And I really like your channel ever since 😊 Thanks for the good work 🙏✨ EDIT: I went to watch it, posted a comment, and noticed that the latest comment on it was me 2 months ago 😅

@@jakefelzien I started in Premiere and I like to make my own motion graphics so the integration with After Effects and Premiere is more seamless. I saw a video that Hayden Hilliar-Smith mentioned he did that for client work, Final Cut for personal and Premiere for clients
