CUTTING FIRST BOARDS! SO HAPPY! - Band Sawmill Build #21

BEFORE commenting, read this: *This sawmill is not a finished product *This sawmill has dual power source, both petrol and electric, thus the purpose of the heavy electric motor on the saw head *The electric motor is the main power source, but it's not hooked up yet (you can see the power box near the sawmill outside) *I can't use a centrifugal clutch on the petrol engine since it hooks up to the same jackshaft as the electric motor and the revs don't match (electric motor has constant 1435 rpm, centrifugal clutch works at higher revs) *There is a designated spot for the blade coolant/lube tanks on the blade cover, although they're not hooked up either *There will be a proper height adjustment system with 5 mm increments *The axle of the sawmill trailer is not in my way and there's no need for it to be removable *It's not hard to push the blade through the wood, although a hand powered feeding system will come *The sawmill trailer must not be lower, it is at a proper working height since I'm 6'3"-4"-ish/192 cm tall, my back thanks me already for that *Log loading system will consist of a winch and log ramps, I will not make it hydraulic, at least not in the nearest future *I have a log arch that'll be used for moving logs around, also by hand *I will use the boards I cut on the sawmill for future projects *I have planned a sawmill shed build to cover the sawmill from the elements and to insure a dry working environment for myself *The corners of the blade guards will stay, at least in the beginning, so there's more room to handle the blade since the guards aren't easily removable, even if it looks bad *I will paint the mill but as you may already understand - the looks of the machines is not that important to me - I care about the mechanical condition and functionality *The sawmill trailer will have removable lights for portability - we already have a set that we use for towing cars *This is not the last video about this sawmill - it's just the last video of the build series ;) This list here pretty much sums up what I still have to do before I can call this sawmill being finished. Donn DIY The interaction between the electric motor and the engine is one of the things I am still wondering but once you built the slide bars I figured you would only have the belt on for the power supply being used. I look forward to future upgrades and additions.

Your fabricating and designing on the fly skills were fun and remarkable watch. I have seen a few of the sawmill build series on KZbin, your's was both enlightening and entertaining. You're right about the belts - that's exactly how I planned on using them, and in the homestead I'm mostly going to run the electric motor, or if we're off grid due to power outage then the petrol engine. Future upgrades will come for sure. There's a lot more to tinker, it just doesn't show externally (except for the paint job of course :D).

I still have to make the saw gantry lock down mounts for highway use, lights and etc. Also it's still not painted, so sandblasting and paint are major things to still do on this mill. Also front cover for the blade.

Nice mill, good workmanship. I had built one when I worked in a shop in northern Alberta. I started off with a 6.5 hp engine but found it a little sluggish when i got into the bigger logs. I replaced it with a 15 hp what a world of differance. We move back to Sask. And haven t used it since.

Excellent build. Only thing I will do differently will be a centrifugal clutch on the motor. Looks like you need to build yourself a hand trolly to cart things like the electric motor around. Well done and thanks for the inspiration.

Can't use the centrifugal clutch since I want to run the electric motor too, so the sliding frame is the way to engage and disengage both.

Too easy. Your idea is probably cheaper and stronger, mine wont have the electric motor so the clutch will simplify construction. Cheers.

It's there for a purpose - I hate watching sawmill sway from side to side. This way the sawmill is fairly stable.

Use a laser level to help with getting the most of a log! I learned this the hard way and is the best! I’m sure you will make something really cool for it with this idea! You’re awesome and have an amazing brain my man!

Great job Sir. I loved the series. Now you need to build an edger for your boards sides. Would be another great series.

Place them on edge and run the saw through them, flip them and do again. You now have dimensioned lumber. Blade lube system and blade height measuring setup an your good to go to mill up hundreds of board feet of lumber in a few hours.
