Such a cool collaboration was well put together. I'm gonna be honored to have a piece of petrified wood that katydid collected. I was the big winner of Tyler's big celebration, I wanted to stop by and say thank you Kate for helping GCC out with a donation. I honestly can't put a price value on his giveaway it's a priceless collection. I really wanted to stop by and say katydid was the like the 5th channel I discovered almost a year ago when I decided to give rock hounding a try, it's like you always say there's so many beautiful rocks, but you were one of the big inspiration channels on me to give it a go thank you Kate 🙂

7:54 Did that one come from Polka Dot? How are you liking running a segmented blade on the slab saw?
@KatyDidRocks3 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's from last summer when we visited PDA. I don't actually care for the segmented blade - it catches far more easily on bigger stones. It might be that the kerf is narrower, though, I'm not sure. All I know is that I can't cut stones that would have been easy with the previous blade.

Thank you for sharing, Kate! Where did you acquire the "rock candy", if you don't mind to say? ... As a Kentuckian, I can appreciate geodes! We don't have a lot other cool rocks, but we definitely have geodes. 🙂 I believe all of these type of specimens are commonly referred to as "geodes" (by me and most other locals). However, it's my understanding that they're technically all "thunderegg", with the hollow ones being a subtype, "geode". And as you've just seen, not all are hollow at all. My family and I just collected a couple buckets worth a few weeks ago, but I only have a 7" tile saw for the smaller ones. Looking forward to a warmish weekend day to see what's inside some - especially the "rattlers"!
@KatyDidRocks3 жыл бұрын
That sounds wonderful! I picked up the rock candy at the Richardson Rock Ranch in Oregon, but it's from Mexico. I actually have some in stock in my Etsy store: www.etsy.com/listing/1059869024/3-geodes-from-mexico-rock-candy-colors?ref=shop_home_active_13&frs=1

If a geode is solid in the middle it’s a thunder egg!

Some thundereggs are hollow also, but there is an old saying out there " A thunderegg can be a geode, but a geode can never be a thunderegg"..

Katie! I just moved from Rigby, ID to Oregon. In Rigby both a hardware store and the city/county building/police station (in their landscaping) had beautiful dark pink/rose/black colored rocks that were just dazzling on sunny days because of crystals in them. I asked a few ladies working in the office what kind of rocks they were and nobody knew. So I asked at the hardware store what kind of rocks they were. One of the employees told me they were Montana Sparkle rocks. They didn't sell them, and they couldn't get any more as the company ran out of them/couldn't mine any more? Have you heard of them? Do you know of anybody that sells them (I did check your etsy store) as I would just like one. Thank you for any info you can give me. i enjoy your videos. My dad was a rock hound/ silver smith.
@KatyDidRocks3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I don't have any of those and am not sure what they are. I found one at Huntley Bridge - they are so beautiful! My best guess is either mica or black tourmaline, but I don't have any real way of telling which, if either, is right. I'll keep my eye out!

Montana agates are kinda the same - some are duds, some are incredible!
@naomitracy56843 жыл бұрын
shut up ! i was just gonna write that geodes are like Christmas!! 😂
@haperawehiwehi86613 жыл бұрын
from my very basic understanding of geodes; geodes (and vugs) form as the hot, mineral rich fluids that would normally form agates are given a lot more time to cool and cool slower, enabling the formation and growth of larger crystals. Hence why all agates are geodes, but not all geodes are agates,
@KatyDidRocks3 жыл бұрын
I learned doing this video that geodes form in sedimentary as well as volcanic rock. So much to learn!
@haperawehiwehi86613 жыл бұрын
@@KatyDidRocks yep. "cold water" agates and geodes are a thing. The most common variant worldwide though is volcanic geodes since it's harder for minerals to form at cooler temperatures.

Problem about cutting Geo's is that the oil damaged or destroyed very rare minerals that are inside. Such as millerite.

Good info! I don’t usually cut geodes, but it’s good to know that there are issues.

Are you really sure those geodes that say "IN" on them are from Indiana? Maybe you're holding them upside down and they came from the Knights Who Say "NI". I really hope someone gets that joke or I'm gonna look like a fool. Oh yeah, nice rocks. The nickname for a solid geode is cannon ball. Just like an avocado that's not ripe yet.

* All Geodes are Thunder Eggs ~ but Not all Thunder Eggs are Geodes... Geodes have Space inside which is the difference.. So, the KY Geode was filled in was NOT a Geode..
@KatyDidRocks3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! But thunder eggs are volcanic in origin, so it wasn’t a thunder egg either! Perhaps a nodule?
