The orange color comes from a mixture of pollen and oat rust known as “Puccinia coronata”, the mower itself isn’t rusting through

I know between farming and video editing, it's extremely time consuming, but I and your other 232K subscribers greatly appreciate all that you do on the farm and informing us how a farm works. I really think these videos will encourage our children to either farm as well or support our local farmers. I definitely do every year buying locally. Thank you again for all you do!!!

Travis and you both have referred to your prior alfalfa seedlings as having a lot of loss over winter and the following year. I can’t recall that you ever let this hay ground lie fallow or rotated to something other than alfalfa . How did you do that without the old alfalfa roots choking out the newer seedlings ? We can’t do alf after alf here - have to rotate corn or grass for a season.

I was in some heavy stuff this weekend with a rotary cutter. It was not a fun time and very slow going. We don't do alfalfa or silage so no need to invest in a mower-conditioner. Sitting under a rotary cutter in the hot Texas sun pulling grass out of the rotors, because you were going too fast isn't fun. Sometimes (always) I learn my lessons the hard way. I also get to learn those lessons multiple times. The mega wide pick up on those John Deere balers are incredible though! It will go through an windrow no matter how heavy. Lol!

What a pretty mow! Dumb question 🙋♀️ Where’s the hay going as you’re cutting it?
@ceemorebuts5 жыл бұрын
If planning on expanding cattle herd, you may what plan on putting tricale in fall for spring baleage then double crop Sudan-sorghum. Could get 2 cutting of Sudan-sorghum. But that’s my 2 cents, hope to it helps
@ceemorebuts5 жыл бұрын
I think there are some variety that are baleage ready around June 1st but understand delayed corn and soybeans planting will cause problems, but planting rye or tricale could bee harvest as grain if delayed in baleage, if there’s a market,then sorghum or millet

How do you like the flails on that moco? We have a New Holland H7230 (not a hydroswing) but I really like it but it has rollers. I thought the flails would beat the grain off the oats...but not so much? I've never used an auto steer either but it looks kinda cool. I guess the difference is I'm not trying to make a video while I cut. Pretty cool though.

What are those deep green tall plants in ditches/low spots, seems like you might not want them in your feed? 11:49
@HowFarmsWork5 жыл бұрын
That’s ragweed, it’s pretty fibrous although not toxic for the cattle so the cattle tend to pick around it. After heavy drought conditions or application of fertilizer, ragweed can accumulate nitrates which can be toxic for the cattle, but for the amount of ragweed in the field that isn’t as big of concern as storage
@Lordwilliams19905 жыл бұрын
make sure you put enough layers of wrap on the bales, minimum 10 with whole crop. how do you get on with the moco, are they ok on hills? I would leave it 24 to 48 hours in the rows then bale and wrap it. You can bale and wrap the same day with whole crop.
@benjaminbauer48835 жыл бұрын

Hey Ryan: I'm new to your channel and making my way through your videos. I am not a farmer, but have mowed hay with my father in law years ago. How is the mower head controlled to track to the left, right, and center behind the tractor? Is it manually "steered" or does it track automatically? I'm not sure you'll even answer me on this old video. I'm here, I'm subscribed, and I'm knocking out your video library. Thanks for what you do. Stay safe!

If you are wrapping the oats, why are you concerned with drying them out?
@HowFarmsWork5 жыл бұрын
The oats were cut at a later stage maturity which won’t result in enough carbohydrates for good ensiling. You have to get them to around 40-60% moisture. They got rained on the next day unfortunately after the forecast changed.
