I always wondered what that was for. Now you got my curious mind wanting to look more into that.

Even if you've been fixing stuff that ain't broke (again), it was worth it for this video. Thanks!

That was really cool to see cut apart. This is an interesting design for a damper, typically what I've seen is the input and output separated by a compliant material, or a spring-like set-up in order to smooth out the torsional vibrations.

This is the first time I’ve seen the inside of this style of damper for torsional vibrations as well, but it’s the kind most typically found on higher performance (read: higher torsional vibration) engines. With my aviation background I’m used to that style which I don’t thing is in place on any road vehicle.

Thank you Ted! This is great information! I really appreciate you taking the time to cut that apart, I always wondered what was inside a harmonic damper! After watching your video, I'm going to do an inspection to make sure everything looks okay with mine! Thank you once again, as always awesome video and very helpful information! ❤❤

Glad you found it useful, Tom! I've got another video coming up on changing the damper on my Series 60. On the Prevost, the job couldn't be much easier to do. Even though there were no real observed issues, I had felt a slightly off vibration at idle that went away with the new damper.

Very very interesting stuff right here! Now, got a question (may be a tough one though). When a Detroit Series 60 is at idle, why is there a slight whistling sound? As the RPM's rise, the "whistling" increases in pitch as well. I've always heard that "whistle" on Series 60 engines and have always wondered what that was. I remember one of the buses (an older Prevost H3-45 I believe) from a local bus company had the Series 60, and when it was idling, the "whistling" was extremely loud, and it idled a little lower than most Series 60's. The whistling can also be heard on a Cat 3406B engine. And on a slightly related topic, how are the ASMR sleep videos with my suggestions coming along? It's been a couple weeks since the last video and wanted to check in and see how it's going! Please let me know ASAP.
