Finnish guy here. Kopeck is 1/100 of a Russian ruble. (at least during the USSR years)

Jillian Banks looks like John Stanley's "Thirteen Going on Eighteen" and Wally himself shares a little DNA with Gold Key's "Wally"

Underrated artist for sure. The main influence for this comes from the Richie Rich, but the cover owes much to Spirou style. Please, do an episode with Marc Hempel, also an underrated artist (Sandman, Tug & Buster, Breathtaker, Gregory, Naked Brain)

I saw the first strip, his interview, in Mome but I've never seen the rest of it. I remember thinking the genre of "bleak gen x comic" that referenced older work was really prevalent in the alternate culture around this time, with the Chris Ware and Dan Clowes being the other subversive storytellers. Playing nihilistically with old-style cartooning tropes, it vaults over satire to become another, demented and hilarious thing. So many great one panel gags here (you missed "I'm Overdrawn" which made me laugh out loud.) I love this video, and when you look at the alt-culture/counter-culture artists. Speaking of which have you ever done a video on Lynda Barry or Julie Doucet? Kate Beaton? There's so many great women comics artists working in that idiom. Thanks and keep up the outstanding work.

Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off. I'd say late 90s internet slang, aol chat rooms and all that.

Kopeck was a currency in Eastern European countries. The color scheme on the Dropouts is 'The Monkees'

What’s the reference to Walter Gropius, because it’s just way too obvious? He was the incredibly influential architect and founder of the Bauhaus (art design school) and then (I believe) ran the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Yeah I just found one of the issues of mome with Wally Gropius. Wish I could find the full collection for a decent price. Ed should talk to Eric Reynolds and Gary Groth and see about doing a reprint for us😂

The cover looks like an homage to the albums of Belgium publisher Dupuis from around the 50s and 60s. Many artists who worked for the Spirou magazine in the Ecole Marcinelle style used this look, like Franquin, Peyo, Tillieux, Will... Kind of a weird choice, since the comic itself is in an American tradition.

Great video, loved the commentary!! There is a fun little nod to Walter Gropius the Bauhaus architect in the last frame on page 54. The interestingly-shaped building is designed by Walter Gropius.

Hensley is great. Yes, Gropius was serialized in Mome. This collection has some additional material.

Growing up the only comic my parents would allow me was Richie Rich and Sad Sack. Any thoughts on an episode about Sad Sack? 😆

ROTFLMAO = Rolling On The Floor, Laughing My Ass Off It's a bit outdated but I wanna say it's millennial-internet-speak. Definitely not Gen Z.
