The periscope is a range finder, you dial it in so the images overlap then that tells you the distance using trigonometry.

These all look great, although If I may, having built a bunch of model aircraft, those rusty chips look somewhat out of place. I'd recommend silver chips near the wing roots, along with some nice oil stains on the panels
