So nice to see CVNP get some love. It’s such a unique park in a lot of ways and often flies under the radar because people love to hate on Ohio. I think one of the most interesting things about it is that it’s like a lot of European national parks in that it was created around the western civilization already living there vs. a lot of the parks in the U.S. that were set aside as parks before being altered by settlers. It’s beautiful in the summer when things are green and the foliage actually muffles a lot of light the traffic noise…and of course, the fall colors are absolutely stunning! Hope you can visit again sometime later in the year to enjoy the rest of the seasonal treasures! ❤

Nice video on my backyard park. Cuyahoga Valley doesn't have the in-your-face scenic grandeur of some parks, but its amazing story of the restoration of a severely damaged ecosystem into a thriving natural area supporting a ton of plant and animal populations is every bit as impressive as deserving of protection and preservation. People who love Cuyahoga Valley appreciate its history, its more sublte beauty, and the huge number of activities that can be done within the park boundaries, from hiking to kayaking to horseback riding to skiing to riding the train to golfing to attending concerts from world-famous musicians to shopping for antiques--and that's far from a complete list. CVNP is a great park, especially for locals who can take advantage of the park's many offerings year round.

Oh, if I'd known you were going to be here a month ago, I'd have volunteered myself as a guide. I love my CVNP and your videos! As everyone else (most likely) commented, it's no Zion or Arches, but it's accessible and you can find beauty everywhere you look. To me, the best part is being able to cobble many trails together to make it just right. In other words, your hikes can be as short or long as you like and as strenuous or easy as well and any combination thereof. We're very lucky to have had the influence of John Seiberling and Ralph Regula not just affecting the National Park but the surrounding areas and our county/metro parks as well. I'm glad we were able to surprise you. Come back soon 😁

Definitely April isn't the best time due to the unpredictable weather, but Spring is nice, especially if you can get there more in the May time frame and get lucky and avoid the rain. We went hiking on the first day it actually felt like Spring this year and saw 5 different beavers swimming in the canal on just a 30 minute walk on the towpath. Thanks for the video. You could have walked or biked the canal towpath to reach the attractions you showed in your video, and stayed off the road. Best plan is to make a series of excursions, parking each time at a Towpath parking lot and exploring a length of the Towpath each time. It’s a magical area with history of the settlers as well as prehistoric Indian occupation.

@UndergroundMan-ph9ks6 ай бұрын
Biking on the towpath is 100% the way to go - I'd definitely avoid driving as much as possible except maybe to some of the waterfalls and places like the Virginia Kendall Cliffs trail that you can't get to from the Towpath. You can rent bikes at Century Cycles in Peninsula if you don't bring one. Peninsula is also a nice place to stop for lunch, dinner or to grab a beer to end a day at either Winking Lizard or Fishers (also there are some shops to grab a premade sandwich or snacks there). From Peninsula you can bike past the various locks heading either North or South from there, and get beautiful views of the Cuyahoga River and canal along the way. Biking on the towpath also helps you get away from the roads. Basically, biking is the primary way to see the park if you are able to do it - the Park is almost designed around it. Heading North from Peninsula I'd consider biking as far North as Rockside Road in the Independence area. Rockside Road has several restaurants and places to stop at right off the towpath as well (Yours Truly is right on the Towpath and is ok, and Malleys Chocolates has chocolate - Lockkeepers is a pretty upscale, semi expensive and you'd probably want to be somewhat presentable, but it has a nice lunch selection). If you bring your own bike, Rockside Road is also a great starting destination, and you can just bike as far South as you want to go and either make it a round trip, or take the train back. Heading North from Peninsula by bike you will also pass Boston (which has the new visitor center as well as a National Park run shop that has snacks, refreshments, icecream, etc) and the Canal Exploration Center which is further down the trail. They actually just connected the Towpath up to the Stranford Trailehead (a hiking trail) heading to Brandywine Falls (I doubt you can bike that, but you may be able to lock up your bike and hike it from Stanford House). My favorite stretch of the Towpath is the section between Peninsula and the 82 Bridge in the Brecksville area. There is also Bald Eagle nesting areas just north of the 82 bridge. You can see a lot of wildlife biking, such as beaver, blue herons, or even river otters as they are often in the various sections of the canal or river. From Rockside road you can take the train back to Peninsula and bike South from there - it is fine to take bikes on the train. You CAN continue on from Rockside road all the way to Whiskey Island in Cleveland, but I personally wouldn't do that... Heading South from Peninsula you can get to the Beaver Pond, and Szalays is right off of the Towpath trail too. Szalays is great for a snack, and really fun in the fall, because they'll set up a corn maze heading into Halloween and have a ton of pumpkins and apple cider. I'd probably turn around at the Beaver Pond, since beyond that isn't particularly nice (2-3 miles past the beaver pond, there is a sewage treatment plant that smells pretty bad), but you can bike all the way to Akron and take the train back from there. Basically, you can make biking the entire length a whole day activity with decent food options to break up the day at various spots. The entire length from Rockside Road to the Beaver pond is about 37 miles round trip. Rockside Road to Peninsula is about 26 miles round trip (or 13 miles one way if you want to take the train back). If you start at Peninsula and turn around at the Canal Exploration Center it'll save you 3.4 mile round trip, or you could turn around at Frazee House and save 7.2 miles on the round trip. This segment of the trail along Canal Rd is an ok segment of the trail, but there is a road along side it on the otherside of the canal. The main attraction along the segment next to Canal road is going along the most intact portion of the canal, the Canal Exploration Center and seeing the working lock. I'll mention that Wetmore Trail head is an interesting 5 mile loop in the Park. You have to cross two creeks - so you'll have to use stones to cross or potentially get your feet wet. Probably best to drive there. Checking out the Cleveland Orchestra for their summer concert series is also nice at Blossom, which is concert venue/ amphitheater adjoining the park. It's the best way to see the Cleveland Orchestra in my opinion, and you can get a lawn ticket and bring in food, drinks (even alcohol), and low lawn chairs or blankets. Sarah's Vineyard is right across the street from the main entrance to Blossom. Hale Farm and Village is in that area too. Tinkers Creek is nice, but Brecksville Reservation also adjoins the Park and has some nice trails - that is also part of the Metroparks, which is the large city park chain that runs throughout the Greater Cleveland area. Specifically, the Chippewa Creek Gorge Scenic Overlook is a nice little trail - you aren't supposed to go down into the gorge, but most people treat it more like a suggestion. There are several other State and local parks in the area which are pretty nice (for example, Mentor Headlands which is a beach and State Park on the East side of Cleveland). Finally, in regards to the Virginia Kendall Cliffs trail, the way I'd suggest hiking that trail is to first head down the trail past the shelter, turn right and first head down to Ice Box Cave (not that stone stair case you started from). Then from Ice Box Cave hike along the cliffs to the stairs. But DON'T go up the stairs when you reach them - instead continue along the cliffs. Continue past the trail the goes to the Octogon area, and then finish at the Overlook. From the Overlook you can walk across the field to the parking lot You could also hike the opposite direction I suppose. The reason I'd recommend going that way is because there are some pretty cool cliffs between the stone staircase and the Overlook that it looks like you may have missed (it also doesn't go through the forest section which is kind of ok to miss). Virginia Kendall is by far my favorite hike in the area!

I've been wanting to go to this park for a long time. I'm from this part of Ohio living in Kent by Kent State University. When I was a teenager I believe, I went to the Ledges and I remember jumping off the rocks into the water below in a large pit if my memory serves me correctly. I also remember walking around the rocks there and coming to what looked like a cave. It was so dark I would not go any further fearing of falling into a hole or worse! My family is from Akron and there are still relatives in this area. I went to college in North Canton, OH. at Stark Technical College and received my Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. I went to the University of Akron for one year and later moved to Columbus, OH. and studied Electrical Engineering at Ohio State University. If I don't get there in the future, at least I've seen it through your video. Thank you.

I can appreciate that some national parks preserve more tbsn just pretty scenery. I was listening to a podcast and apparently this area used to be so polluted that the river caught fire. It's really impressive how people have restored the area so that many of the original species, like beavers, have returned. I agree... like Indiana Dunes there is an interesting juxtaposition of nature and industry. But that just shows how easily areas like this might not exist anymore if people didn't step up.

I agree 100%, that is the most impressive thing about this park, how well they restored it all!

Cuyahoga, yeah I had that. At first it hurts, but then it got itchy. Went away in a month or so.

What’s the best resource you’ve found when planning your outings/videos? I’m a native to the area that uses a wheelchair, I loved seeing this content since it’s harder to see in person! Thank you for doing this!

For hiking I like All Trails, it is usually great for finding new spots. For other stuff I like to look at the park map or watch other videos / read blogs to see what I want to do.

As @fluffyotter said Hocking Hills is amazing if you like waterfalls and interesting rock formations and caves. In the Greater Hocking Hills area it is estimated, by a waterfall author, there are up to 600 waterfalls. The falls are spread across the state parks, state forests and private properties. They are much taller than the ones in NE Ohio but do not have the water volume of the NE Ohio falls. NE Ohio is estimated to have approx 200 falls.
