Күн бұрын

The Swedish CV9040 infantry fighting vehicle features the 40mm Bofors L/70 automatic cannon, capable of firing APFSDS projectiles. The simulation presents one of these projectiles impacting the side armour of a T-72 (without ERA), at 65° -as if the T-72 was angled at 25° from head-on, at ~200m.
The T-72's side armour has been modelled with a hardness of 300BHN and it should be noted that many modernised variants have heavy ERA on ths side, which is effective against APFSDS projectiles. However, as the CV90 fires 5 rounds per second, there's a good chance that at close range, a previous shot could trigger the ERA, clearing the path for a subsequent one.
The Armour-Piercing Fin-Stabilised Discarding-Sabot projectile's design has been approximated based on information and images available online, with it being modelled as a 10x203mm Tungsten Alloy (WHA) penetrator with a muzzle velocity of 1500m/s. Dimensions were approximated from this image: www.reddit.com...

Given that the Sabot rounds can activate the ERA (since the ERA is designed to counter KE and HEAT projectiles) it would not make sense to fire HE. 1. You cant tell if the enemy has ERA unless you are super close ( you might not even be able to tell what T series tank it is) 1.a. Taking the time to decide what to shoot even if you can tell is time you are not shooting 2. A sabot round can still do some damage on a side shot even if there is ERA (if nothing else because you are not guaranteed to hit the ERA). 3. The ERA types that are designed to protect against SABOT have heavy (~1inch) plates on the outside, they may not even get set off by small caliber HE

Regarding dynamic protection, everything is very controversial. In theory, Contact-1 does not initiate from kinetic ammunition. And it is Contact 1 that is hung on board the tanks. In many tanks, this place is blocked by additional steel sheets of 20mm. Behind them is a rubber-fabric screen, so the elements of the chassis serve as additional armor. That is why the support rollers of the T-72 tank are large. And the caterpillar c is quite thick. The thickness of the armor of the T-72 tank body in some places reaches 300mm at an angle of 90. This is if with the thickness of the support roller and an additional steel plate. If there is a contact-1, this is an additional 10mm if it does not work and 200 if it works. At an angle of 60, the armor in the most protected place reaches 600mm. But in the place where the author showed, yes, there is weak armor. 80mm housing and +20mm additional plate and 20mm rubber+container contact-1. That is, only about 110mm of pure steel + 20mm of rubber. I don't know how it will delay the projectile.

@@PanzerAce760 largely replaced by APFSDS or APDS rounds in general, only nations that still make common use of full caliber AP rounds for their IFV/AFV/APC autocannons like AP-I or APHE is iirc Russia, China, and a few warsaw pact supplied countries. APDS and APFSDS almost exclusively have a better penetration, velocity, and post-pen shrapnel effect than full caliber rounds which is why they are largely the only real AP rounds used by most western IFVs or vehicles mounting an autocannon with cost and production chain complexity being their main limiting factor, which is usually fixed quickly in the case of war-time production. The Russians for example only barely started putting 30mm APDS rounds into production for their BMP-2/3 series of IFVs and even then they're incredibly rare in use due to the costs of production and the supply chain already in place in Ukraine using AP-I and AP-T rounds for the 30mm they use.

@@КанистраКеросина Titanium is definitely not glorifyed aluminum lol. its extremely hard and very lightweight meanwhile aluminum is very ductile and lightweight. A thin sheet of 2mm titanium can stop things like standard small caliber handgun rounds and possibly a 9mm from a distance but aluminum certainly couldn't do the same. basically look at the altyn helmet for the effectiveness of titanium, it can stop small caliber rounds while being quite thin but any rifle round, even out of a short barrel, will go through it.
