I just bought this shotgun. My son and I really enjoyed it. I really like the trigger.

I think the Stevens 301 is the same price and its better tan a NEF or H&R,....it has a safety and screw in chokes.
@Lex55767 жыл бұрын
I miss H&R single shots when they were made in Gardner, Massachusetts. The wood was better, and each gun's break action stayed tight as a virgin with absolute zero play or wobble. I also loved that marbled looking blueing on the receiver. Henry has a promising single shot shotgun on the market now, so I'll probably get one of those.
@derekneumann7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the case hardened effect on the receiver of older HR was so cool. I almost got one of those, but all the ones I found were beat to shit, and frankly I really didn't want a super long barrel.
@Lex55767 жыл бұрын
There's some talk going around about Remington starting the H&R line back up in coming years. Only production will then be in Alabama, and that new plant is big. I think Remington will eventually abandon Ilion, NY altogether before all is said and done. And that's sad, those are good people being done an unjustified disservice by Schumer and Cuomo.

A smooth bore with #4 buckshot sure will have a massive spread, no need for short barrel tax stamp.
@92GreyBlue Жыл бұрын
Massive spread? Smooth bore has tighter patterns than rifled. Rifling is better for slugs.
@1979Spica5 жыл бұрын
I have this gun, but there are issues with the extractor. Maybe I need to just slick up the chamber, but i often have to pry shells out after firing. Recoil is massive for a 20 ga. I added a Pachmayr Decelerator pad and now it is just right. You still feel it, but it allows you to fire a lot more rounds at the range. Without the pad, recoil is harder than the Remington 870 in 12 ga. Basic physics, this gun is very light and easy to carry so there is less mass to absorb felt recoil.
@derekneumann5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they do kick like a mule for a 20 ga. Maybe I will add one of those Pachmayr pads.... I have not personally had trouble with the extractor. Its a fun, simple gun, I think. :)

I want one of these for Turkey hunting. Grew up with a .410 single shot. I'll have to send the barrel out to be threaded for screw in choke.

A good review in spite of the camera fumble. I just wish you could have filmed the test firing that would have been great. Also I don't care much for the ejector type who wants a live round kicked out too hit on a hard stone and go off. The extractor is much better for safety reasons. Thumbs up.

sgtjarhead99 Do it! For less than $200 you can't do much better. I wanted a 20 ga, but not a 28 inch barrel. This thing will be perfect for up close and personal hunting in the thick No. Michigan woods, plus just plain fun. gotta love a single shot. :)
Yeah, it's a cool, inexpensive, functional gun......but they only made them for a short time...... you may be able to find them still. Happy New Year!
@DeanMk14 жыл бұрын
@@derekneumann Yeah, I've heard from other owners that they're really well made...however, no need for me to buy one....owned an H&R Topper 20 ga, since 1987...even had the full choke opened to modified! I fitted mine with a Limbsaver because the stock was made a little short and now its perfect. Long live the break action single shot! =)

Been looking at them a little. Kinda looking for a single 410 maybe. To bad H&R/New England are no longer making singles. Sad to see so many good things go. Stevens has a single, but its china made. What the heck is wrong with all these makers, importing china guns and stamping their name on it. They should be ashamed of thier un-patriotism.

A question.. Is this single shot available in 12 gauge? I cant see it anywhere..
@derekneumann5 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I couldn't find it anywhere either. I know they USED to make a SS 12 gauge..... in the Scout series, I believe, and also a barrel conversion for the Accura but I couldn't find either of them anywhere online. ..... Gunbroker, Buds Guns, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc. And, actually this one is no longer on CVAs website, but you can still find them in 20 and 410. It's a nice, simple, fun piece in 20, and actually kicks a fair bit. I would recommend it for $200 for sure. :)

Have you ever looked at the Hatfield ones?...can actually buy them at some Walmarts. Look them up on KZbin. Very inexpensive ($150). Or search in your local pawn shops for an older gun, or on Gunbroker. You can find something for sure.

Yup. Still have it. Frankly, it hasn't gotten used very much unfortunately.... 200 rounds at best. I made the stupid decision to go back to college to further my degree, and with working full time, and being a single dad, it hasn't left a lot of room for rabbits, squirrels, or 2 liters. It seems like a solid, inexpensive gun.

Jay's is a fantastic place! I want to get this for my 12 year old (who is also a lefty). I see these being talked about as a slug gun. It's a smooth bore that can also shoot bird shot, correct? I'm stuck between this or the Remington 870 compact. What's your recommendation?
@derekneumann7 жыл бұрын
Good question, tough choice. I guess it depends on what you want to do with it. The CVA is cheaper by a bit, even though they have rebates on the 870 right now. The 870 is multiple shot vs single, so more complicated, heavier, but good to teach pump basics, I suppose. However, the CVA being single shot teaches the skill of make one shot count, I guess. I have a full size 870 also (12 ga.) and its awesome, but I wanted something simpler to have fun with and make difficulty higher. This address your slug gun question: this is a regular smooth bore shotgun that can shoot either rifled slugs or shot, however remember it does not have a screw-in choke tube system....so not so good for a turkey gun, or skeet gun. Hope you little buddy likes either!! Thanks! Cheers!
@andrewnorander45417 жыл бұрын
Yea, I'm big on the single shots because you have to be patient and shoot a quality shot. I also like that the single shot is ambidextrous. On the negative side, I was hoping to have something a little more versatile that he could knock down a turkey or some skeet with. Luckily, we're still 4 months out from Christmas and I have time to figure it out! Either way he'll be pumped to have his own gun.

As far as I know it is fine. It has a fixed MODIFIED CHOKE, which is fine for slugs. I have shot 20 or so through it without issue. It looks like CVA maybe isn't making this version anymore??
