Rygar is a ps2 action game that has some of the prettiest color choices for enviornments in the genre. Gets only remembered in the context of god of war, which I understand I am perpetuating with the title of this video so it does well in the algorithm. But hopefully after watching the video you'll come to understand they're two games that have nothing in common besides the fact they feature greek mythology. Also as many have pointed out this video was mostly made before Krafton bought Tango. Left it as is because I didn’t want to go back and change it

I really love this experimental age of gaming. And also David Jaffe answer for Tactical Bacon Production about "is it God of War rip off Rygar?".

Actually face model for the princess in this game is not Britney Spears, it's Isobel 'Izzy' Cooper, who also did the song for this game "Wish", (also Tango Gameworks isn't dead, Krafton bought them and the Hi-Fi Rush IP)

This game walked so Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox could run. (even if Rygar PS2 wasn't made by Team Ninja specifically, as far as I know) 2:13 Was it written before or after Tango Gameworks getting bought by the PUBG people? Still not excusing Bethesda stabbing Tango though. Hehe... The "Enviorment" typo 🙂 Firstly knew of the game via the Tactical Bacon Productions video on it. Cool to see you covering it.

Funny timing. There's rumors knocking about the "greek era" games being remastered and ported to new console gens and PC. Here's to hoping they're true, the PSP games are my favorite in terms of character development for Kratos and it's a shame more people never experienced it

I am going to comment before I watch the video because this is stuck in my brain. I have this game, the physical PS2 disc. I remember getting it for dirt cheap at a yard sale as a gift from my mom. It was so good and hard. I never beat it, but I remember playing it until the late hours of the night/early hours of the morning loving it.

I remember playing a demo for this back in the day. It looked really cool, and the blue flying guy got my attention because he reminded me of Raziel from Soul Reaver, but I just couldn't beat the statue-boss in the Colosseum because the horse always caught me with its firebreath, so I never got the game myself. Now I'm at least interested enough to at least have a let's play on while I work. Thanks dude! 🤘

@@jurtheorc8117 Avoided watching the whole video for the sake of the spoilers he was mentioning but like one of the earlygame bosses was largely offscreen due to the camera angle, but he had very distinct sound cues that made avoiding his attacks way more natural in spite of the handicap. Also, restricting weapon powerups until you get the second diskarmor is a really smart way of keeping the player from callously dumping everything into the starting model without knowing what's to come. Also while Rygar himself is juggle-prone, I feel like the damage is so minuscule (plus from what I've seen the actual juggles don't loop as bad as other cases) that I don't see it as a big issue and more just feels like power conveyance

Whoever made this, should have come back after seeing the success of God of War. put a shield on his other arm and call it "Rygar: Dual wielding! ". Not sure how they could take the number gimmick to Rygar 3, but on 7 gen Bayonetta came out, wielding weapons on all limbs, so, that's what you do for Rygar 4.

Your initial theory is incorrect. You can still see DMC in every GOW and by extension, in any other game. DMC refined faster (if you forget about DMC 2) so the other games did, while GOW classic era games kept unrefined and very repetitive in game mechanics while focusing on visual upgrades.

2:05 I personally do feel like there are still a lot of fun AA action games coming along myself. It's just that they're all hiding in RPGs these days. So I guess I don't disagree in a sense that the age of smaller budget linear action games is gone. But I look at it as just another shift in the industry, in the same way you'd look at the DMC clone changing to the God of War clone era. Almost all of my favorite new action combat systems from the last 10ish years have been attached to RPGs. Nioh is probably the biggest example (and what I've dumped the most time into, freaking hundreds of hours) but I think of games like Scarlet Nexus, Neo TWEWY, or Valkyrie Elysium too. Or even the 3D Ys games to a way lesser extent (kinda boring player movesets but the boss design is pretty freaking great.) That's mostly where I get my action game fix these days tbh. I have tried out quite a few indie action games as well, but most I've played feel more like rough prototypes than full games. The biggest exceptions probably being Assault Spy (which is peak) and Ultra Age.
@Cvit
@Cvit 23 сағат бұрын
I too believe now that we are still seeing AA/middle shelf games nowadays but there was a period before the indie boom where there was a lot less which is what I am referring to there.

@StephenTheZ for some other indie- and smaller-studio/dev action games, may i ask if you've heard of the following? - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos (personal favourite) - Soulstice (personal favourite) - No Straight Roads (personally significant) - As odd as it is, i want to include Lost in Random. - Genokids (still in development) - Enenra Daemon Core (still in development) - Immortal: And the Death that Follows (still in development) - Decline's Drops (came out yesterday!) - Cookie Cutter (personal favourite, there's more planned for the long term in both gameplay and story for the base game and i'm excited for it) - Magenta Horizon (the full act 1 out of 3 total for the full planned game is available as a demo) - Mightreya (by the same dev of Assault Spy, still in development) - Possibly i can include Kings of Hell too. (still in development. Warning: Visually quite spicy. People seem positive on the gameplay).

To me, the dmc series always felt boring and were it not for its early impact on the as-yet underexposed action game genre, it would have come and gone as the boring bargain bin game it is. Juggling sandbag, pacifist enemies with meta combos got boring after like 20 minutes To me, Ninja Gaiden will forever be the peak of the genre, no other game had as much player combat control, satisfaction and pure cinematic flow as that franchise. Runners up are obviously god of war and Dantes Inferno

I just came to vent real quick because there's nowhere else for me to do so about this. I'll watch the rest of the video later. I emulated rygar a year ago because I remember I liked the game when I was younger but couldn'trememberwhatthe story was about other than greek mythos, so I thought I'd give it a go to refresh the memory. Honestly fuck rygar to hell, the controls are garbage, the fighting mechanics are boring and repetitive on a good day and god awful on a normal day. Heed my words if you go back to this game you will find out immediately how far hack n slash action games have come and how much they have improved because rygar is borderline unplayable for today's magnificent standards of quality and precision. Playing rygar today is akin to Playing football with a hockey puck.

Fuck yes. I loved this game. I beat it on every difficulty as a kid. So incredibly addicting. Plays a lot closer to the Onimusha series than God of War. The "materia" system you described: You missed most of them because they're locked behind higher difficulties. Higher quality versions of the ones you already picked up can also be found on higher difficulties, but duplicates will also increase the power of existing ones by a small amount. The game is meant to be played through multiple times, and the discarmors each have different combo chains that let them deal with different types of enemies more effectively. Icarus is bullshit though.
@jurtheorc8117
