WHAT I TRULY ENJOYED WAS HOW JOHN GAVE US A LESSON ON HOW TO CREATE NEEDED STRUCTURES IN ADVANCE AND HOW TO DIY TECHNIQUES FOR ALL TO LEARN. HOW TO CONVERT THE SWING AXLES WAS A FANTASTIC DEMONSTRATION. WE HAD A 61 CORVAIR FOR MOM, THAT GOOFY FAN BELT COMING OFF WAS NORMAL. JOHN HAS ME HOOKED.

Very intriguing build project ! I admire your engineering and fab skills, this is not a job for the faint of heart :-) 40 years ago, I built a Corv-8, using a Crown Engineering kit and an L79 small block that had been modded a bit, and a standard (Saginaw) 4-speed transaxle. The project turned out very well, but the longitudinal engine placement limited seat position. I`m 5`11", and seating was pretty tight. Your approach gives a lot more interior room, and will be greatly appreciated. I can tell you from experience that this car, when finished & sorted, will put a BIG smile on your face. A lightweight, high horsepower mid-engined car is something to be experienced. Thanks for sharing your videos, I am anticipating future episodes !

Fascinating to watch your process. My first car was a '61 Corvair that my dad bought brand new from the dealer for $900.00 and passed on to me in 1973. It was a fun car to drive maybe because it was underpowered! Looking forward to the next video.

Fascinating and informative. Even though I've worked on cars all my life, and have seen some amazing "large engine into small cars" grafts, I've never witnessed the actual process and thinking behind such projects (for example how to remove metal to allow room, while adding back metal to add strength). This would require a lot of knowledge about structural engineering, it would seem; however, I believe I'm witnessing you "winging it" at times. Incredible!.

Forgot to add.. I learned how to drive and stick shift my fathers old corvair. I use to sit on his lap and he would let me steer and tell me when to shift. Brings back some memories. I was probably 7-8 years old at the time. The white shifter knob. Then the engine went and he got a think a 1964/65 Nova/Chevy 2 station wagon. Wish I still had that wagon. Loved the way they looked. Moms had a 66 SS impala with the big block that’s worth a lot of money now. Wish I had that one today also. Lol. The impala was a rare car.

If i was you , where you're planning on trimming the subframe , i would do the plus cut some little sides and weld those in a tryangl fashion along the subframe before you weld the inner plate on . just for extra support and provent twisting .
@bobyoung16982 жыл бұрын
A question - why didn't you install a few cross braces into the channel before welding on the custom-cut sheet? It seems as if that would have added a little more strength and rigidity.

Because the piece I was working on in that video will be tied into a tubular structure, mainly, the roll bar down bars. If that piece was a stand-alone, then yes, internal gussets would have been necessary.

@steeltree-fabricatingandcu37963 жыл бұрын
John Reynolds tubing doesn’t add allot of weight It’s the strength I like especially for suspension mounts It also gives options for mounting sheet metal Zeus fasteners making panels removable for access Making the chassis more ridged as well I think you said you’re adding a cage Something else to consider Is making the subframe removable it self dropping drive train out the bottom I’m in the beginning process of building a Porsche 550 spyder ground up all aluminum car Some if not all of the things Im telling you I’ll be doing on this build I’m starting with building a wood buck
@JohnReynolds6613 жыл бұрын
