Don't give up on CVTs because of the car in comes in. Choose the right car manufacturer, don't choose NOT to buy a car because it has a CVT. Toyota vehicles with CVTs are all widespread, from the coldest to hottest corners of the planet. They run 500,000 km on CVTs with no problems. On paper, CVTs are absolutely incredible. The concept of a seamless transmission where you don't feel a shift at all and can maximise the efficiency/lifespan of your engine is mind blowing. In practice however, the sheer cost of manufacturing, maintaining, training for maintaining, time maintaining, and the special parts make it a very poor choice when compared to manual or automatic transmissions. Thankfully, CVTs seem to be getting better in terms of reliability and some can last a long time, but in general they are too difficult and exorbitantly expensive to realistically maintain. Repairing CVTs is a nightmare to the point where you'd be better off replacing the transmission entirely if something breaks, and that is not only horribly cost inefficient, but also wasteful. Manual transmissions will always reign supreme in terms of cost and ease of repair.

@Samuel-zl7yw3 жыл бұрын
@@pinakmiku4999 I like the idea of conventional automatic transmissions because I think they outweigh the benefits of the cvt, not because they’ve been around longer. Cheaper to build, repair, and maintain to last. The CVT is good for casual non-sporty driving however a quality tuned automatic transmission won’t give you bad roughness and feeling under normal acceleration. A CVT relies on a belt which needs to be replaced after some time. Unfortunately unlike a normal car belt running the battery in the car the cvt’s are costly to maintain and require extra knowledge. With automatics you can simply drain and replace the transmission fluids which is much easier.
@caspaabriel47943 жыл бұрын
For me it's not about negative perceptions, feelings or sensations of the CVT. It needs to be reliable and able to be maintained by myself (DIYer) Not by a qualified mechanic, too, by the very nature of it's design incredibly expensive to fix. YTube abounds with videos of failed CVT's and crippling cost. Manufacturers have recalled thousand and thousands of these failed transmissions. Yep it's good they will fix (most times). Life's complicated enough without having this failure. Drop this concept and start again. Kind Regards

@@JBM425 I seriously doubt you are going to be towing with a CVT transmission. You see, a CVT (unspoken by most evaluators) is really only a "light duty transmission". Have you ever seen a heavy truck with a CVT? No, and you probably never will. Because CVT's are not designed to do heavy work what so ever. Strictly a light duty transmission. I've been studying them for a long time now. I understand how they can give "some" better MPG (about 2-3 mpg better than a counter gear auto transmission). But that comes with a cost. Some say that most CVT failures has to do with overheating, and that if you add an aftermarket cooler to it, you can extend the life of the CVT (true for regular trans too but regular ones by nature last longer than CVTs) Repairs on CVT's? Totally unheard of. When it breaks you replace it, period. By a new one or working used one. They simply don't rebuild them,,,,,,, yet.

The only thing that worries me about CVT is they are destined to fail. Belts don't last forever. Also, what are the effects on the belt if, let's say, my wheels got locked up in snow, ice, or mud but the engine keeps revving? The only feedback I'd sense is the sense of not moving anywhere. Would this shorten the lifespan of the belt in the CVT?
@malcolmwhite6588 Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean in snow mud etc the wheels are “locked up” in these conditions the wheels are not “locked up” generally -usually just spinning without grip . But with any transmission, including a manual clutch or automatic, If your wheels are genuinely locked up, (not turning) and your engine is revving then will strain or even break every single type of transmission.

The gearbox does not know, or if the wheels are actually driving the car forward or not as long as the wheels are turning in general terms, the gearbox is happy! 😃

I have many doubts on CVTs. You can rev a manual wildly and as long as you shift correctly the gears, no problem will arise. You can use full engine braking also. When engaged, the gears transmit the power directly. Modern autos can do equally well, and DSG even faster. But I have the sensation that CVTs will be always skidding and over revving the engine in strong accelerations, and would have little engine braking. They would be ok for slow daily driving, sure. Not that much for some sportive driving. Not an expert, sure. But I would like to hear more about this subject. I guess I will always prefer a good 6 speed manual anyway.

I wanted to buy a new car, but when I've seen that a lot of cars have CVT transmission but no option to be able to choose Automatic Transmission, I can not buy a new car. Because affordable cars have a CVT transmission, expensive top of the range models offering Automatic transmission. Car manufacturers should not impose CVT transmission to their customers, the customer should be making the decision, not the car manufacturers. Another problem with new car designs is the manufacturers are using a lot of plastic parts in the engine that is combustible material & subject to damage over time.

I prefer AT..why because there is less power in cvt.less exictement.high expensive to maintain a cvt

CVT is not fuel efficient at all. You are lying as the engine suffer from reving high RPM too long. Well exp if that CVT has this fake Shifting trickiry, that fixes the engine stay reving high RPM for too long

Artificial script readers are awful. It sounds like a poorly programmed robot. I hate this lazy trend.
@goatsplitter6 ай бұрын
Downvote for the awful robo-voice and the complete wrong information about CVT not shifting and not "gear hunting" because they DO as a result of companies programming them to do so because people don't like the feel of a CVT getting into the right spot and holding. As a result, CVT's (many, not all) "shift" and will "gear hunt" like an traditional auto.

I have a cvt car and will never buy another one, the rotten thing has buggered up at only 35000kms, it is not good enough.

Automatic transmission is way better than a cvt transmission period. Ask all ppl who own a Nissan you will find out. Nissan had a big lawsuit against them over their piece of sht cvt transmissions.

CVT has banned in F1 that why stupid people hate it because it too fast, they never care how incredible CVT has done, CVT is true of AUTO, hilarious when they call AT is auto while that shit still need clutch 😂😂
@trivium1923 жыл бұрын
cvt is sus going up hills and with that slingshot compare to the automatics imo
@alvinsimba7342 жыл бұрын
It's not really that sus when using adaptive cruise control especially going up hills, it actually maintains the speed even on those high elevations while using less gas as well. I found out with my current 2020 corolla LE with regular CVT.

I just drove a Hyundai I10 with a CVT transmission, damn, that car pretty fast for a 1.2, all of that by keeping the engine RPM down and use less fuel CVT is OP af for economic cars

Is CVT i Mercedes Benz A class, second generation reliable?
@ernsmile5794 жыл бұрын
If you will expect it will last long like normal manual or automatic it is not reliable, cause CVT has a different lifespan it is 50% less life than original transmission. But actually it depends on the manufacturer as well, through years it will improve like the old automatic. But for mercedes I think it will not last long as honda or toyota.

I claim Bullshit ! CVTs' ONLY advantage is their cost to Mfg. They are shite /fragile transmissions. Full of potential failure issues. Derived from Scooters and Snow mobiles as a reference point..
