As with all the pros and cons of each of those transmissions - the one people should choose is the one which fits the most their needs, driving style and location they drive in. I live in Switzerland and as an Alpine country it has a LOT of hilly bending roads. Actually I spent around 70-80% of my driving time on such roads. Previously I had Mazda CX-5 with classic Automatic Transmission. I loved that car for its responsiveness and the fact that such a compact AWD car was pulling me out of deep snow every time I needed (thanks to 21cm of ground clearance and good AWD). At the same time its "choppy" automatic transmission was driving me crazy so often on those hilly windy roads that I used MT most of the time - which I loved, as it gave me always a feeling that i have control over car which, as you can imagine is super important on "serpentines". Then we bought a car with DCT (DSG) and boy it made such a huge difference! No more chopping while changing the gears, it always knows when to increase or decrease them. The comfort of driving with DCT in such places is incomparable (I drove cars with CVT too). But I do realise that risk of something getting wrong with this type of transmission is much higher due to its complexity... Oh well... that's the risk we have to take to drive far more comfortably and that's why I always ask for additional checks of my transmission every year.

Additional pointer, DCTs are not smooth at a lower speed such as congested city speed/car park etc. They tend to roll back as they lack vehicle creep function like the traditional autos with a torque converter. DCT I feel are more suited for endless highways but not city drive.

I am using torque converter, the only issue with AT is a bit more fuel conception than others. I love the smooth gear shift and heaviness when you give more gas. However, I cannot drive a CVT without paddle shift as it gives me the rubber band effect, DCT on the other hand kills me with the performance and its sportiness but it is costly in terms of price of the vehicle and maintenance.

Have owned dct, cvt and traditional tc auto. On congested roads, dct will make you pull your hair out though, its wonderful on uncongested highways. Cvt is okay for your day-to-day errand run but not suitable, if you're in a hurry or are someone who enjoys a little enthusiastic driving. In my view, tc auto is the way to go in any type of traffic situation or drive style. It does consume a tad more fuel but its so so much worth driving this all rounder transmission.

@aeroline114 жыл бұрын
DCT is lighter than AT in term of weight and also compact means it saves more space in engine bay. The cost of manufacturing is not as expensive as AT with same number of gears (6AT is expensive than 6DCT). The downside of DCT is the freaking high maintenance cost. The gearbox is robust but the clutch pack is wear and tear item which designed to last about 250k km. When the clutch slipped it need a replacement. Cost is about USD 600-1000. AMT is the least applied by car manufacturer as it is the least comfort while shifting and cost is slightly cheaper than DCT. DCT is considered 2 sets of AMT (same machinism) in 1 box which overcome the shifting smoothiness problem meanwhile provides greater fuel efficient and faster gearshift than AMT. Among AT, CVT, AMT and DCT the best gearbox is AT as it is extremely reliable and smooth. DCT comes second as it is fastest shifting and most fuel efficient but high maintenance and less reliable. Third place is CVT, a gearbox designed for ultimate smooth riding, very fuel efficient and least components applied but accelerating is horrible. AMT is last place, it is cheap for manufacturing, compact size but it is least comfort and most car manufacturers move on to add a set of gear to become DCT. With exist of DCT it almost have no reason for AMT to stay on.

The CVT is a very bad idea as is the automated manual. Both are being discontinued due to early wearout. The DCT is also a bad idea as it has clutches which wear out and are hugely expensive to replace. The torque converter auto box has no downside is likely to last the life of the car. A modern AT will have 37mpg compared to its manual equivalent with 38mpg.

@manuelthodos59254 жыл бұрын
AM it’s because you’re not suppose to inch forward in stop and go traffic with a dct. You have to essentially drive it like a manual with no clutch pedal. So as you go to inch forward the clutch can’t fully engage the 1st gear which leads to clutch slip which can destroy your transmission.
@angrymuffinsb4 жыл бұрын

Wow! I bought the new 2018 Elentra with the dual clutch 7 speed automatic, primarily because it didn't have the CVT / IVT style transmission. I love it! Its characteristics are somewhat like a manual that you don't have to shift yourself. And boy is it quick for a 1.6L. When I buy again, I guess I'll be searching another model or manufacturer that doesn't install these transmission. ...Isn't it an Oxymoron to install a CVT / IVT transmission into a car that badges "Sport"? Though it appears Hyundai isn't doing it with their 2020 Sport model, I do believe many other manufacturers are. There is little chance these transmissions will survive very many hard starts that younger generation put these cars through, especially in hilly locals. I'll gladly give up a mpg or two for a reliable transmission. Once out of warranty, the car owner is in for a real shocker as these transmissions being to fail! $$$$$$

Nice presentation but in the end you don't recommend the classic automatic gearbox for any condition. In my opinion it's the best all-around option. It has the most advantages (smooth, reliable) and with the latest technology advances almost none of its former disadvantages. It's much quicker now and with good fuel efficiency. Sure, it's not as fast as dual clutch but it's still fast. Not to mention that dual clutch are quite unreliable and very expensive to fix if something goes wrong. Personally I'd choose classic automatic for all scenarios unless I wanted top performance. In such case it would mean that I could afford a very expensive car in the first place so I wouldn't mind for high maintenance costs of the gearbox (or any part of the car).
